ABS Deluxe Vinyl with EXTRA SONGS is out! Available now at: www.almostbeatlessongs.com
Totally Fab version with Paul's immaculate musical sensibility. My new favorite song. Cheers!
As an amateur songwriter I'm always amazed by McCartney he could literally fall down the stairs with a guitar in his hand and write a song that would put most of us to shame (and the screams would be better too 🤣)
Or, as someone else once said (not about Paul). He could go to off to the toilet and come back with a triple album 😂
That´s because it´s all BS. Take the song A World Without Love, for example. It was most likely written by Mitch Murray. Listen to How Do You Do It and compare it with I´ll Be On My Way, A World Without Love and I´m Telling You Now, by Freddy and the Dreamers, written by Mitch Murray. It´s basically the same song with different lyrics. Paul McCartney is no genius.
Paul’s throwaway is someone else’s career!
If you watch Get Back, you realize what a genius Paul is.
Didn't need to watch Get Back to realize that. (He'd made one or two good records previously).
Two takeaways: a) Paul's is better b) Jane Asher was so beautiful!
She was lovely looking wasn’t she
Soooo very beautiful!
He cheated on Jane.
@@hanorabrennan8846 Its not my place to judge other peoples personal lives. I just enjoy the music!
I can hear this as a Badfinger song too.
That has McCartney all over it. The phrasing and the unusual chord progression and elongated melodic line. Really good! Thanks
Thanks for listening
Hey dummy search Theodore Adorno Beatles songwriter...
Of course it has McCartney all over it --- he wrote it. You're strangely saying that as though that's in dispute.
@@HomeAtLast501 Young kids don't write hits...older more experienced composers write music....search Theodore Adorno Beatles songwriter....Beatles are a Cult and Fraud
You are a deep listener.
Paul also wrote their hit " world without love".
😮🤩😎
Good thing he honored her at his gallery. She inspired so many hits.
I love this episode finally hearing the original version of woman was awesome.
Thanks, Wayne!
I wholeheartedly agree!
Big thanks to whoever bought the acetate for making it available for us to hear! Fantastic stuff.
For real!
Yes! Thank you, anonymous one!
It's staged speculation to drive up interest before acetate mysteriously found and sold by Mr anonymous.
It's amazing just how incredible of a song writer Paul was penning lovely songs that could be termed "Beatles throw-aways".
Paul certainly wrote far more songs for other artists than the other Beatles. He was very generous actually imo as he gave away great songs like this one and Goodbye etc...
He also gave “Panina” to some random hotel bar band he befriended on his vacay in Portugal. He wrote it for them in like twenty mins and they got a huge hit out of it and helped that band get their start. It’s honestly just crazy how he does it…
Really? The lyrics are terrible. Sorry!
Beautiful version! This confirms that 1965 is still my favourite "Beatle year"
I love that Jane listed this song in her desert island discs
Really! Didn't know that!
I listened to the interview and generally enjoyed it. it was an interesting choice knowing who the author was. It has to be difficult to block out Paul when talking about the 60's... or by now really easy with all the practice.
@@Dios67 Where I can find that interview? Is on CZcams?
@@Dios67 Yes I think it's a little "I won't name him but I remember him" which is sweet. I perfectly understand why she doesn't want to talk about him or their relationship, she's already PMC's ex-girlfriend in everybody's eyes without calling attention to that.
@@bobnelson2021 Thanks!
Jane was such a beauty!
The mega talented Paul McCartney! I prefer his version. The other is too overblown.
Agreed. Thanks for watching.
To me the P and G version is superior. I like the added instruments, and their harmonies are so good.
And Beatles productions were never ‘over-blown’.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@Datanditto They weren't unless Phil Spector became involved.
So long ago...Paul and Jane's love affair...how much inspiration he had as a songwriter.
Boy, I had forgotten just how GOOD the Waller and Asher harmony was ... what an incredible voice blend.
They are quite good. They should have kept going. They had a good possibility of being right with some other great singers.
What an era with all those talents and songs. What a luck for Peter (and of course his sister) & Gordon to be friends to Paul.
I agree, they really had a phenomenal sound, right up there with the best. A British Simon and Garfunkel.
@@neverforget6523 Yet, I find it kind of funny to have a love tribute to his sis being sung by the brother. It's a bit strange to hear he wants her to spend her live as her bro's _woman_
(As it turned out, she didn't become to be love of live of the songs' writer either. That's another matter though. I wonder if Jane Asher could stand to hear her bro doing this after Paul quit)
Jane quit him not the other way around.
It was so great to be alive at the time all this great music was on the radio.
There's gotta be a version of this with McCartney singing somewhere! Come on! This is great.
I wish T__T
I have a small piece sung by Paul on one of my cd's and I also want the whole song but until now I didn't find it.I even asked the chairman of the British fanclub but he also doesn't have it.
@@carmenmusiclover.0532 Thanks - you've asked for all of us!
I always loved this song. Really, anything Paul wrote for others. But especially for Peter and Gordon! This song must have been so special to Jane not only for it to be written for her by Paul, but for Paul to have given it to her brother to sing and have a hit. Paul always was a very family kind of guy.
I think he and Peter remained friendly even after his sister dumped him. Which would be awkward I think but eh, lol 😂
@@thesilvershining I know, right? It's so nice that they could stay friends. Or at least friendly.
Seeing this I realize how much Paul wanted it to work out between him and Jane. She really was his first full flat out love. But I wonder how much of that was the whole family situation too -- Paul loving being a part of a close-knit working intellectual family. It must have been like a dream come true!
But, it seemed that out on their own, trying to cobble together a life just the two of them, he and Jane were just too far apart. He just couldn't be the kind of guy she needed him to be, unless she was right there with him. He wasn't the guy who could make it work with his wife gone for months at a time. He had too much stress in his own life, too many temptations, too many women absolutely throwing themselves at him.
(I wonder if that was one of the reasons Paul seemed so conflicted about Yoko gluing herself to John, despite how destructive he could see her behavior was to his ability to write with John, and to the cohesiveness of the group? What Paul may not have quite realized was that Yoko glued herself to John not just for love, but for fame. Unlike Jane who truly had her own career, Yoko to have a real career needed to wrest John away from The Beatles to work on HER things. Such a thing would never have even occurred to Jane. She didn't need Paul. She truly had her own career.)
But Paul did find Linda, and Jane found someone else and had a very nice life. I guess that made things easier for Peter and Paul, lol. I think Peter stayed quite active in the music industry, Paul's circles even.
@@charwest9449 Peter became a very famous producer in the recording business.

Definitely sounds like Paul on drums w/rudimentary playing for the demo. Would have been cool to have a Paul vocal demo like this.

Now I know why I loved this song so much.
Love this version!
It certainly sounds like Paul's style of drumming, so it may very well be him...
This song is a must in my music collection. Not because Paul wrote it; because it's a beautiful song. I've always loved the song. Those were the days.
I've always loved this song. I mean REALLY loved this song.
I love Peter & Gordon and both the versions of the song are incredible but these 20 seconds we have Paul singing it are just superb. He is a magical singer...
What 20 seconds he sang the whole lot from the acetate discovered
I'm confused..was the acetate played here " Peter and Gordon s" first demo doing it and not Paul.
@@purplecreamband I don't think he sang any of it
I love this not only was the original version found and you talk about it in this video it’s played in this video that’s so cool
Thanks!
Looks like John’s later song “Woman” borrowed just a little from this - the way the title comes in at the beginning of each verse with the same rhythm and pause after.
Maybe a little homage to Paul? They had recently rebuilt their relationship.
At 4:21, one can hear Paul's typical drum pattern he particularly liked playing and used many times ,
as can be heard on Oh Woman, Oh Why's intro for example.
Wow - Fabulous!
awesome always thought this was a great song and it still is.loved the pictures of the good old days. haunting!
Wow! Great vid! Had no idea about any of this. Perfect context and then the full song. Can’t ask for more

I LOVE PAUL.
Love this version, much better than the over to top throw everything at version
Great video! Thank you for uploading.
Though many here knew about this specific song from the Get Back movie, it's amazing to get to hear the first version Paul had in mind.
Paul really was (and still is) a musical prodigy.
Love him ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!
He has amazing musical instincts. "Prodigy" is the perfect word to describe him.
Paul really was, & silly Willy still is (riding on Paul's coat tails)!
I like this version, sounds much more direct and sincere.
Oohhh myyy Gosh! I simply cannot get over this! I had no idea. I'm cryin'. I've always absolutely Looved this song, thinking how beautiful it is. SOOOO GLAD 'twas found & I found out. Thank you! Paul was truly in love with her. Why did she break up with him?crazy gal
Btw, Peter & Gordon have always been one of my favorites. Thanks again..so much
Suzette, one of my favorites too! Partially because I was fortunate to meet Peter, through my sister, who was friends with Gordon's sister. Spent an hour or so talking about some old times, living in London. My sister met Diana and Jane in high school (when Paul was dating Jane). Thanks for spurring me on to memory lane!
PS: Paul and John wrote a bunch more for Peter and Gordon, btw
I've always been a fan of this song. I bought the single back in the day.
If that is Paul on drums it’s great but it sure makes me appreciate Ringo so much more.
World Without Love is another big fave of mine which Paul wrote for Peter and Gordon. Both songs demonstrate what a great tunes-smith Paul was and still is. Beautiful melodies poured out of him, as natural to him as breathing is to most of us.
That I have on a 7" vinyl sung by Paul ( the Beatles) and I love it.
65'...what an incredible year for music 🎶

gone are the day's....during the time these song's were hitting the radio there was magical electricity in the air there musta been a change that affected the whole world ,,it will never come again...where does the time go??
Oh wow! I didn't know about Paul's drumming in the acetate
Paul's gift for writing songs (on his own and in collaboration with co writers) for other artists is something which is often overlooked. "Nobody I Know" was the big hit he penned for Peter and Gordon mid 1960s. In that decade he also wrote songs for Cilla Black, Cliff Richard, PJ Proby and Mary Hopkin. Along with lyricist Tim Rice he wrote a song called Hot As Sun which was recorded by Elaine Paige a couple of decades later. In the early 1960s there was a stream of songs for other artists but I'm not sure if he's done it recently. Btw he's playing drums on The Ballad of John and Yoko.
He’s a musical savant
He's also plays drums on Back in the USSR.
"Nobody I Know" was just ONE of the big hits Paul penned for Peter and Gordon besides, "Woman". You must have forgotten about "A World Without Love" (#1 in the U.K., the U.S., and several other countries) and "I Don't Want To See You Again"??
He played drums on You Know My Name, too.
@@rikkiabe5932 nothing special on the drums so quit pushing that!
Who in their right mind would think their version of a McCartney song is better than Paul’s? Unthinkable!😂
I love that expression on the face of the sound engineer at the start of this, as Paul turns to him and sings a line in his cheesy vocal style. It looks like he can’t believe that this is all in a day’s work!
CHEESY?? is that supposed to be a put down?
@@patticrichton1135 no, he means Paul is doing it self-deprecatingly

I love this huge orchestral arrangement which turns a folk song into a big musical soundscape
Yeah!

I’ve never heard this song before - reminds me very much of the kind of songs that Harry Nilsson was writing at the time. It’s fantastic!
Wow I didn't know Nilsson was writing songs in 1964-5. The first I noticed him was Everybody's Talking at Me, seemed a lot later.
Nillson's debut album, in 1966 entitled "Spotlight on Nilsson", was a compilation album that contained singles he released from 1964 - 1966. Half of the songs are written by Nillson, and half are covers written by others, including "16 Tons" by Merle Travis.
Nillson's second album containing another 5 self penned songs was 2 years later, 1967's "Pandemonium Shadow Show". It actually also included 2 Beatles songs, "You Can't Do That" and "She's Leaving Home". Like a lot of artists at the time, he was likely very influenced by Lennon-McCartney. The album also contained the controversial song "Cuddly Toy" that he gave to the Monkees for release.
@@stephenjones101 Thanks for the info! So the songs written by Nilsson around 1964-5 that sounded like Woman, how come they didn't get airplay?
@@stephenjones101 interesting how even for really excellent writer/performers like Nilsson, they'd be lucky to break through with even a one or two really big hits. All the more amazing how Paul was just able to churn them out -- and give a bunch away, which also became hits. Why did Nilsson give his song to the Monkees? Maybe he needed to find a group. And of course, Nilsson was hanging around with Lennon in L.A. around 1974. You'd think something could have blossomed from that. But maybe neither of them was really in the right head space.

Paul was actually helpful in giving Jimmy Nicol tips on drumming to Beatles songs when Jimmy had to sub for the ailing Ringo. Somewhere I have seen a picture of him on drums back then.
Just Paul becoming the dominant one!
Just the ending alone proves the released version was highly orchestrated and professionally produced... as I listened to it reading comic books with a mouthful of bubble gum (at that time).

It could be possible with technology the way it is. They have AI that can imitate a persons speaking voice after only hearing seconds of it. Why not someone singing?

Jane Asher inspired at least three great McCartney songs:
‘You Won’t See Me’
‘I’m Looking Through You’
‘We Can Work it Out’

Such a great song. Paul's fingerprints are all over it. He most certainly could've been playing drums. If he could play on the ballad of John and Yoko, he can absolutely handle this song. Also, love all the amazing pictures.

Well?! What song?
Peter & Gordon were a popular act for a couple of years, but then they dropped out of sight in the States. We've since learned that Paul lived at the Asher house in London for a year or more and wrote a hit or two for his friends. I remember "I Won't Live in a World without Love," a top 10 hit in the States, written by Paul. What a great time it was with new music sprouting up in England and the US, inspired by the Beatles, Stones, and American R&B acts.
