    Wow man, superb explanation! What I really liked best was your usage of the camera angles and such - outstanding! I try to use it as much as possible for my own videos and I definitely learned a few more things about it now. By the way, if you wanna shrink the iracing watermark, just hit ctrl+pgdwn or up in order to de- or increase the ui size while recording.

    Brilliant stuff Danny! Another great informative video! I’ll be sending many people here as reference! I think it’s the best breakdown of this concept that I’ve seen and the best examples provided imaginable! The work and effort put into this video did not go unappreciated! Even though I already knew everything you talked about it was a great watch anyway. Only thing is in the beginning when you mentioned that bad driving is not under/oversteer “it’s you”. It is still understeer and oversteer even if it’s to an extreme degree. Still a brilliant video and I think the best on CZcams! Thanks for your hard work Danny!

    This video was just about oversteer and understeer but the bit at the end about setups just opened up a whole load of understanding about it.
    That was a such a small portion of the video, but that opened up so much for me.
    I have a local GR86 cup in my country next week and I'm definitely using this information to figure out how to set up my car. It's only my second race ever since I got my MOZA R5 and setup was always a mystery to me.
    Awesome video. Too bad i can't give you a new subscription since I've already subscribed about 2 years ago 🤣

      Thanks for watching and letting me know - You're not alone with that, the AMG struggles for rear grip in slow corners because of the front-engined layout, but you benefit with front end poise and stability in the higher speed stuff, so it's a trade-off with that layout of car.

    First, this video was exceptionally efficient and explaining what exactly over/steer is. You really have a way with words when it comes to teaching.
    Second, I have the Logitech wheel and pedal set and I bought the true brake mod a while back and it was a game changer. It makes my brake feel so good and realistic that I’m not all worried about upgrading my petals anytime soon. Admittedly the wheel leaves a lot to be desired but the pedals are fine.

    my favourite setup change for reducing oversteer is limiting the front suspension travel - stopping the nose from pointing at the floor too much. Without having to stiffen up the front springs or decreasing rear wing. It frustrates me if some games don't let me limit suspension travel.

      @@alecmillea4539 bump stop range of course. Narrow it down and your car will lean on that instead of diving.

      @@catnipherb In real life if your car is hitting the bump stops under braking it’s set up wrong. It means there is no suspension movement left to absorb bumps in the braking zone and the car will be extremely unstable. It might work in whatever game you use it in but in real life that would kill you. Hence why it’s not an option in most games. Effectively you have no suspension on the front end while braking. If the track is glass smooth it’ll be fine but the second you hit a bump you’d die.

      @@alecmillea4539 I don't know. I use fast bump and fast rebounds to deal with curbs and uneven surfaces. Pick any track and any car, go into their aggressive setups and you'll bound to find some cars will have short bump stop ranges by default. I'm sure Aris sets them like that for a reason.

    Is there a reason why at 7:50 (fixing oversteer at corner entry) you only talk about steering less strongly and not about braking less hard? When you're coming in hot and your rear wheels start to slide at corner entry it's a tough situation to get out of and I wonder is it always better to steer wider or could it be sometimes better to release brakes? Either way it's really tough situation to stay on track. I also noticed at 11:50 you talk about oversteer again but now only mention throttle and brake and not about steering. Im curious why ?     The separation of rotation to the front and stability to the rear is a good intermediate explanation, but it has flaws. Rotation comes from a torque applied to something. In a car, this torque comes from the force of each tire times its leaver to the center of mass. This gets quite obvious if you play with trail braking and let the rear step out under braking. You can get the same rotation or spin by adding more angles to the tires with the steering wheel or getting harder on the brakes. You can also understeer while braking if you load the front tire too much. That happens when the front axle toes in under load and how road cars balance tire life vs safety.
    Speaking of the main parameter for stability besides load is the toe. The more toe you have the more stability you get from that axle, but you lose rotation. That's quite obvious for the rear axle. With more toe the rear tires are facing more towards the center of the car. So the longitudinal forces of the tire get a smaller lever to rotate the car. On the front, it`s more difficult. The outside tire of the corner gets a better leaver, but the inside tire gets worse. Unless you fully unload the inside tire that also gives stability at the cost of rotation. That's what makes the highspeed corners in Spa or at the Nürburgring Nordschleife so tricky. At Schwedenkreuz Nordschleife you completely unload the inside front tire so you need a loaded rear to make the corner. At Radillion Spa you unload the left side, into a huge compression as well as load the left, and then unload the left again. This variation of stability makes the corner really tricky and you need to have a precise line through it.
    If you want to play around with this try harder or softer springs with lower or higher ride height. So the effective ride height stays about the same. A softer axle will toe in more when you load it, and a harder axle will toe in less. In conjunction with your driving style that's how you tackle over or understeer in specific parts of the corner. With a stable car, you can use more trail braking and start getting on the throttle earlier. With a more pointy car, you need to stay straighter while braking or accelerating and coast mid-corner for longer. Both styles can max out a tire's grip but they require different lines and techniques.

    This information could help me in real life. When I crashed with my car that just had new front wheels. Causing it to oversteer and it was very very scary. Luckily nobody died. But I was effected and I still feel my neck after 5 years after the accident. 😢

    it's all about rear and front high.. oversteer? rear higher. understeer? front lower.
    Rear wing? More straights = less wing
    More corners = more wing
    SPA MONZA wing at 1 etc..
    And than you set up front and rear high to the point that you can survive the race.

    Danny Lee I have some problem in forza motorsport 7, iam using the g920 logitech, and my car keeps oversteering! This never happens with the Japanese cars I used. Iam currently doing a muscle car race. Is there a upgrade or setting that can help me stabilize my car. I wonder if I can send u a live video so u can help me out.

    Love to know how to gauge the braking speed going into the corner. I kind of understand that hard brakes and then turn into the corner but I think I am missing out something, the car understeers and slides, while by watching others they are doing the same thing but they don’t slide.

      Sounds like you might be carrying a little too much brake into the corner as you turn the wheel - doing too much braking whilst turning can overwhelm those front tyres and cause understeer. A video clip would be proper helpful!

    Sorry if you already answered this and you can call me dumb, but I don't understand the part about a rear drive car suffering from corner exit oversteer from too much power to the rear. Wouldn't more throttle help against oversteer instead of causing it since it's shifting weight to the back?
    You recommend some soft controlled throttling to remedy oversteer in that case, but wouldn't more throttle equal an even more effective result?
    How does shifting weight to the rear TOO MUCH cause oversteer, shouldnt it help grip the rear?
    EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't consider basic physics lol. The rear wheels spinning faster reduces grip naturally, offsetting the grip gains from the weight transfer.

      That's right - if you put too much power into those rear wheels, the power will 'rip' the tyres free from the tarmac and they'll spin. When tyres spin, they can't grip the track - like how when someone loses their grip on an icy slope, it's much harder for them to regain grip on the ice while they're skipping over it so fast, so they'll just slide and slide until they're going slow enough again.
      That's why powerful cars take so much care to drive - to get the best grip out of corners you have to apply power smoothly, but it's easy to overdo it and spin the rear tyres.

    I have maybe a misunderstanding of the part coming at 7:18.
    You say that as we are under braking, the front of the car has more grip, and the rear less.
    Then, if we turn to brutally the steering wheel, then, the rear of the car having too low weight, then less grip, turning too much and too fast the steering wheel will lead us to ask too much to the rear wheels, that would not be able to keep the grip asked, and will lead to.... oversteering.
    But on another hand, there is another understanding of it that leads me to a paradox.
    If you turn more the steering wheel, you are using more of the front wheels grip potential to turn, and you are leaving less grip potential into braking.
    Then, by steering more, you brake less, and by braking less, the rear of the car regains weight and the front loses it... this gain of weight into the front and lose into the rear would lead into understeering. Or you'll either keep braking as much but get into ABS and... understeer.
    So regarding this conception, steering more = braking less = less weight transfer = understeering... the opposite of the previous conception, which also intuitivly makes sense to me.

    Hmm, maybe I missed it but there is nothing about how to catch it as in what to do with the steering wheel on top of what to do with the pedals.

      Mostly just reaction time and learn the car and part of the track that it under/over steers

    That was a bit complicated. My way of doing it back when i used to drift a Silvia S14 was, if the car rotated too much aka understeered, i would left foot brake to shift weight to the front tires to give them more grip while keeping my foot on the gas to keep the engine in the power band and the turbo spooled. If the car understeer at corner entry, force the car to rotate by either more gas to break the rear loose, ebrake, or clutch kick

    I think I was confused for the lonest time at the explanation of understeer and oversteer, when is it just you? It seems to me now its always technically just you but sometimes you ask way too much of the front or rear in an OBVIOUS way when you carry way too much speed or spin up the rears or throw in too much steering lock but sometimes it under steers or oversteers and its not obvious either due to temps, lack of consistency in the car or too little information to go on - so it seems to me now you can always technically blame the driver when they complain about oversteer or understeer. TLDR the explanation I've seen thus far including in this video are awful - understeer and oversteer aren't nearly as relevent as people seem to think but how much a driver asks of a front/rear limited car is but people just like to call it under/oversteer when they want something to blame. But generally how the balance of a car shifts through the corner and with setup - yeah over/understeer is a good paradigm but pretending that it doesn't exist when a driver carries way too much speed - that's just not true - its still technically understeering its just the driver could have relatively easily accounted for that.

      Thankfully there's plenty of folks in the business of racing tutorials - for a much faster lesson pace, Suellio Almeida is the guy. Personally I tailor my scripts for those that prefer to see the pattern proven across several examples, which is also how I like to learn

    how can an a logitech user be making content on iracing....if you can afford iracing you can afford better gear mean better information. that like tryna tech DH mountian bike on a racer bike

      It's best not to judge folks by the equipment they use, and also check my video catalogue - I use/used all sorts of kit along the way, I regularly swap and switch equipment to put it to the test

      You were sold a lie. Sorry about that. I'd sue for misrepresentation of the product. Only fools and horses work for 10-12 hours a day. Those fools that do, begrudge anyone else who doesn't because they were told that was virtuous and believed it. Got no time for video games but got plenty of time to watch sim racing videos on youtube and make bitter comments about it because you hate your life. Must be nice.

      Coach Dave Academy is the most well-known site for ACC setups but my knowledge of what's 'good' in ACC is not too advanced - for iRacing, though, I've always gotten on well with VRS or Craig's Setup Shop but that can change from time to time as different people create different setups.
