That has to be a This House record. One couple, 4 mansions and they're all still standing. Including TWO in Manhattan where everything was torn down.
My dude you been putting in WORK lately and I'm loving it. Keep it up, each one of these is fascinating.
This lady and story stands out among the predictability of her Economic Peers. It is rare that 4 home survive the couple and continue as a reminder of their Hostess and her Husband.
Excellent choice in subject and description.
Can you imagine walking into one of her parties and having her ask you, “what are You doing here?”.
"Make yourselves at home, and no one wishes you were there more than I do." At the first ball of a new social season: "Here we are again, younger clothes and older faces."
Poor Mrs. Fish, having to have a drawing room that doubled as the ballroom! And thanks to you Ken, I discovered the tv show "The Gilded Age" not sure how it missed my attention.
Mrs Fish.Yikes! Now she was a piece of work. I think people feared her more than they claimed to like her as she brazenly and openly mocked the values that many in society held sacred. She was an illiterate rich kid and definitely exploited her status because she had no other options. She had wit but no intellectual heft so her wit had to be limited. She must have felt like a verbal cannon at times. I would love to know; from her maids, what she was really like.
"We are not rich, we have only a few millions." Mamie Fish.
Their Stanford White House was/is beautiful - the Gothic bedroom, not so much. Again , many thanks for showing us around.
$3million I believe, which was poor compared to her peers who had tens of millions
I do enjoy your channel. A spoon full of goodness.
I would have loved to be a guest at the party with the monkey. All these homes are Breathtakingly Beautiful!
Thanks Ken for sharing another fascinating story & a gorgeous opulent mansion!!! 👍👍🙂
I’ve recently watched the first series of the Guilded age and now on the second. Thank you so much for posting homes related to this, I’m loving them ❤
I would have greatly enjoyed the monkey taking liberties with the chandelier. I do hope he did not get hurt. But l can see why a lively monkey would jazz up any party. And the hostess was truly an original. How did her husband choose her, l wonder. He sounds quite prosaic and she was a firecracker.
How wonderful that all 4 houses are still standing. Thanks for this!
They are all splendid. I just couldnt imagine that lavish experience of the era. Thank you Ken once again!!
Loved crossways. What a lovely house and was sited beautifully. Thank you
She was portrayed accurately on The Gilded Age.
Crossways is my favorite house in all of Newport. It looks so beautiful and majestic as you turn the corner and see it up on the hill. It’s a shame it’s been converted into luxury condos now.
I really liked the big white house with the columns I've always liked how they look as a kid I'd fantasize about owning and living in one of them and having Christmas with lights decorations etc with family one day
Another terrific story - you are never disappointing!
How could anyone change those beautiful rooms, and the entrance was just fine for me.
I've always liked some of what the last couple of centuries has offered us in architecture and interior design.
I would have loved her parties. What a character! Some party themes were in poor taste, certainly, but at the time would have been considered hysterical by the 400. I love Crosswinds!
I like Mamie Fish much more than any of the others, as far as it is possible to say after so much time and not even having known them personally at all. Lovely houses and on a human scale, so I can imagine living in them. The Newport house has always looked to me like it was inspired by Southern USA style? Thank you for the video!
This could have been a really confusing episode but you presented it quite clearly. Good job!👍 😀
Love the story but mostly love that u say they still stand that seems to never happen.
LOVE this channel!
Please revisit each of these Mansions in future videos so that we may see longer loving looks at them!! Great content once again!!
She was the original club kid! Fabulous woman!
What a character!
While we didn’t see much of it I think my favorite was Glyncliffe.
Thank you Ken 🙏☺️
The Stuyvesant Fish house at 25 East 78th Street is now owned by New York's former mayor Michael Bloomberg
I loved the white piano and the harp.
she sounds like a hoot!
❤
Rather than being illiterate, I wonder if Mrs Fish may actually have been dyslexic.
I liked Crossways on the hill.
I love The Glenclyffe estate ❤
They were all beautiful homes! And she sounds like a pistol! I definitely would have wanted to be on the guest list!
"monkey dressed up in a costume." That is funny. Apt for what passes for royalty.
Her name is pronounced May-Me
...and its not 'mahmee'....its 'maymee'
Not to be glib, but that woman was a beast. One wonders what the attraction was?
Dude, Ken.... it's Not stuyVEStant.....it's pronounced STUYvestant (accent on the first syllable)
Similarly....in other videos you say pilASTER when the correct pronunciation is PILaster (again... accent on the first syllable).
He pronounces it like the word "pubescent". LOL
STUYvesant
Too bad we can't get polar bear skins so readily. They are softer than soft. If you ever get a chance, curl up on one!
Yet another Stanford white build
Some names need to. E pronounced properly.
Please learn how to correctly pronounce the name "Stuyvesant." Thank you!
Sounded correct to me. Source: i have family with the Stuyvesant last name.
@@jamesburtonbud Your family may be right or wrong, but in the US, the common pronunciation is along the lines of stai vuh snt.
·
@@johnvonundzu2170 stai vuh snt is what i heard. perhaps you are picking up on an accent you have never heard before?
@@jamesburtonbud On this video it's being pronounced Sty vessunt (two syllables rather than three) At least that's how I'm hearing it.
@@johnvonundzu2170 He pronounces it like the word "pubescent". LOL
Please learn how to pronounce names, e.g., Stuyvesant. I've notice this in some of your other videos. So much effort it put into them that it is a shame that the pronunciation of some names is off.
I’ve recently watched the first series of the Guilded age and now on the second. Thank you so much for posting homes related to this, I’m loving them ❤
