The Lost Mark Hopkins Mansion on San Francisco's Nob Hill
This house is,gorgeous
Beaux’s arts is truly the pinnacle of architecture and in my opinion the most beautiful
I think the mansion was my favorite. I also appreciate the Robie House. I do love Art Deco as well. So many decisions! 😎
The 2nd Uplands Mansion is a stunner !! Beautiful architecture and The grounds are so beautiful and As Luxurious as The Mansion itself !! Exquisite indeed . The Penthouse was absolutely not my idea of tasteful it was a little over the top and absolutely nothing like Uplands whatsoever .
I view most of these mega-mansions as tributes to the self-absorbed greed of the ultra-rich. Many of these nonfunctional buildings ended up being demolished and replaced with more appropriate structures or turned into public spaces. Huge waste of valuable resources.
😮 I don't think so!! And they don't seem the least bit nervous.
Both residences are great, but I lean more toward the Beaux Arts house and I would choose grandfather Crocker's Second Empire house in San Francisco over that.
If wood wasn’t used in that Era, what else was there? Thomasville, GA is 30 min from my home. I’m going for a tour!
I really love the mansion with it`s sense of balance and how it sits so solidly on the landscape. BUT, I really liked the dining room in the Deco apartment too. The wall treatment was very cool.
5000 dollars was alot of money in 1937, far more than 100000 dollars in today's money.
Now this is my style 😎 👌
Loved the Uplands house.. the deco apt was not my cup of tea.. so glad Uplands continues to be a useful and absolutely beautiful building...thanks you again
Penthouse not my style
I'm in love with the Beaux Arts Mansion
Crocker Bank?
I'm from Pittsburgh and everyday I think just how lucky I am to live here. So much innovation it's shocking!
I definitely prefer the beautiful mansion over the penthouse. Love the L-shaped drawing room. I'm glad that Mr. Polk isn't around to see brutalist architecture. Thank you, Ken.
I've always loved the Beaux Arts style. It's superior to the cheap crap modern builders turn out these days. Modernism is on its way out - evolving to two separate branches. There's the New Beaux Arts Classical that is being re-evaluated by architects and designers; and there's the Hyper Futuristic designs coming from firms like Zaha Hadid with its seamless surfaces and groundbreaking engineering. I've grown to hate Art Deco because it's cold and ugly, and I despise Frank Lloyd Wright's work because it is as severe, unyielding and intimidating as he was.
Very interesting take on the subject.
His Mansion! Thank you Ken for all your research!
Each residence was beautiful! Hard to choose one, especially because I have always liked Art Deco!
I love his penthouse with all of the evidence of an exotic animal massacre on the floor. Too bad the room didn't make it into a museum somewhere.
I liked the mansion , but his apartment was interesting.
It's a bit tiring to hear all three names every time his name is invoked for whatever reason... Truly the architect of the century or however one would term it; significant then now and forever! Frank Wright (see, two work too...) 🥴
The dining room marble walls were "book matched" I'm sure you were having a temporary lapse of memory calling it "split."
Con man extraordinaire.
@1:09 “…from the crowded… WHAT? Can’t understand what was said. 🤔
So cool, Ken! Never heard of this house!
Horrible that the once Gorgeous mansion was demolished... Thank goodness for the photos, that are treasured...
I love natural light so my favorite thing about this house are the large windows that extend to the floor. I'd never heard of this house before, thanks for a very interesting tour!👍
It makes sense to me. I’m to sure how else they’d get up and down from a skyscraper under construction in that time period. OSHA wasn’t created until the early ‘70s.
Very odd but beautiful
