- Watch Diane Schuur's reaction as her idol, Johnny Mathis, surprises her by coming out and joining her for lunch with a song during a Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters event. Diane had no idea that her friend, radio & TV personality, Shotgun Tom Kelly, went to the effort of arranging this impromptu greeting! Many thanks to Frank Martin & Owen Cartwright for making this happen as well.

I waited thirty years to meet Mr Mathis, I discovered him by my music teacher in high school she told me I sound very much like him I at the time said Johnny who? So she gave me a cassette tape (goes to show you my age) and listened to it and from then on Johnny Mathis was my vocal teacher from a far. I got to meet him in the back of the arena in Des Moines , Couldn't speak but the exchange we had was magical and I will never forget it. I know he is a genuine loving person who is the singer's singer and I learned so much from him without even knowing him personally. I do hope some how some way that only God can allow for him to hear me.. He is so gentile and so wonderful and has enriched my musical life. Just wonderful is all I can say
I love it when one great performer gets to meet another great performer. I love Johnny Mathis' golden voice as much as Diane Schuur does!!

I've been a fan since my teens. Now pushing 70! I've never had the pleasure of seeing him in person. He definitely is a very classy gentleman. If he surprised me that way, they'd have to scrape me off the ceiling!
@@lovesmusic36 You've got to go see him in person, he tours all over the country. I saw him a few years ago. I will never forget it. Sold out concert at our most posh concert hall.
@@cheril8891 I'd love to see him in concert. However I'm in Toronto, Canada and from what I see on his website, he doesn't have any plans to do a show on this side of the border. I'm sure he has so many fans here. I'll keep my eyes and ears open and hopefully he'll make his way to Toronto or vicinity!

@@cheril8891 Just checked his tour schedule and nothing showing out of the States. I would guess that he'll be putting some of these concerts on hold because of the coronavirus. For now, I'll have to settle for youtube postings! Looks like we both have excellent taste!

I love this video, thank you for sharing. I was at his concert in Portland, Oregon last Feb. 13 for his Valentines concert. Johnny was amazing, a none stop singing, the fans, a sold out event, applause for every song were deafening. Wonderful, wonderful guy we all love.

Johnny Mathis went to high school with my Mom at George Washington High in SF.
Bless that man (and bless Diane Schuur, certainly)....Mr. Mathis is one of the last of the greats still around....we've lost so many performers, musicians, entertainers in recent years, so enjoy this legendary man while we still have him :)

That announcer speaks to Mr. Mathis as if Johnny was a 3 year old...and the look on Johnny’s face after he is finished speaking says: “ok, I did my thing, now I wanna get outta here”. ....Poor John.. BUT he is a gentleman and goes along with the program. Mr. Mathis really is a treasure.
