  • This was a television broadcast of a December 4, 1982 jazz concert at the White House during Ronald Reagan's presidency. Vocalist Diane Schuur at this point in her career was being unveiled as a discovery of saxophonist Stan Getz.

This is another treasure from the CRATES, i.e., dusty boxes of Betamax videotapes (some unlabeled) that were recorded from television broadcasts when Beta was the video standard and VHS had not yet emerged as a competitor.

I went into a small bar with a small stage, and she was testing the audio and began performing and as I recall, it was just her, the bartender and me. She told all a secret when she took questions from the audience, she was going to do a performance somewhere soon, and she was in this location doing what she loves to do until then. I called my sister, "you should come down and hear this!" listen as I held the bar's phone up in the air. A few people, very few people, came in and stayed. After many songs, and so amazed! I walked out and saw the billboard, Diane Shuur, for three days. The place didn't get filled none of those nights, it was all free or nearly free admission. Later, Sister called me back, thanking me as she went on one of those two days left. Not long afterward, I'm watching television, and they mention the White House, the people attending this performance by her. My heart remembers that night, in a small bar, in Tucson. It was her second return to the White House to perform at a luncheon in 1987

They cut the part where Nancy Reagan rushes up to Diane and gives her a big hug.
