  • This was a PBS television broadcast of a December 4, 1982 jazz concert at the White House during Ronald Reagan's presidency. His wife Nancy is visible in the audience alongside George & Barbara Bush but apparently the president was on a mission. Perhaps he was practicing diplomacy by telling jokes such as these: • President REAGAN telli...

    Here we have a jam session on "Summertime" with several luminaries joining in: Dizzy Gillespie & Jon Faddis on trumpet, Stan Getz on tenor saxophone, Diane Schuur on vocals and Itzhak Perlman (who was the master of ceremonies) on violin.
    For Roy Haynes' 85th birthday celebration in New York City in 2010 the world-famous Blue Note club had Chick Corea as the special Saturday night guest, i.e, 28 years after the video you're watching. Roy Haynes was as sprightly as ever, dapper, and still on top of his game in every way. LONG LIVE ROY HAYNES !

    Dizzy had a superior mind. His improvisations blow my mind. Chick did quite something here too.

    The woman singing isn't mentioned? What's up with that?

      Please read the full description below the CZcams window. The length of the video's TITLE is restricted and therefore only so much can be crammed in there. The musicians listed in the title have WAAAAY more name recognition and therefore the ability to attract eyeballs to this video.
      FYI, also on this channel is a segment from that same concert which FEATURES "the woman singing" - Diane Schuur.

      Thank you. I see her name deep in the third paragraph. I got disgusted at her name's absence before I got that far. Nancy Reagan and many famous man names came first. But ok, if it is more important to attract attention, I get it. But, when this video floats around facebook, we are attracted to her.

    The choice of song is certainly quite ironic given the administration. LOL. Would have given anything to have seen Miles there instead of Dizzy.

      @jackhammer111 Před 4 lety

      why the hell would you say "instead of"? Maybe instead of Jon Faddis but definitely not instead of the Dizz.

      @@jackhammer111 I dunno. Maybe cuz I like Miles more than Dizzy? D'oh. You suffer from typical ignorant music fan-itis - thinking that every musician needs to be compared to every other musician before they can be admired or enjoyed on their own merits. Go back to sleep. I posted that over 2 months ago.

      Arent you the one who "compared a musician to another musician before they can be admired or enjoyed on their own merits" by saying you'd rather have miles than dizzy on this? And you also say you like Miles more than Dizzy... this comment is so insanely stupid I can't even begin to unpack it lol. How can you deride another dude for saying he prefers one musician over the other and as your supporting argument you say you prefer one musician over the other. Just read your comment over and ponder how dumb it really was now that youve had a couple months to calm down.

      Where is the irony in "Summetime" being performed in the Reagan White House? I think you're in desperate need of a dictionary.

    • @steverickenbacher7110
      @steverickenbacher7110 Před rokem

      @@piustwelfth It's a song from 'Porgy & Bess', a musical about slavery, Einstein. If you don't get the irony of that song performed during a celebration put on by a repub administration, then you've just been sleepwalking your way through life in America.

    I'm a big fan of Chick Corea but he can't play the blues worth a damn.
