Goose bumps! Tears! Grinning from ear to ear! I feel like I've had a relationship with Diane Schuur for 20+ years. The first time I heard her sing I was completely hooked. I'm so glad this has been preserved for generations to come. Just incredible!
This is one of my favorite Kennedy Center Awards performances. I had always been a fan of Diane Schuur but she outdid herself that night. Just brilliant. And you can tell that Stevie thought so too!
Two musicians who have made a forever impact on the world... While being blind, neither allowed their conditions to stop them from making the world a better place to live. (Thanks for that living example!) Take-6 and Herbie Hancock simply take this over the top! I really believe God smiled and cried like we all did because the love was palatable. BRAVO!!!!
when you hear a singer of such incomparable talent such as this, it makes you truly understand the power of music and singing - simply magical and wonderful - bless you diane schuur -
WOW - talent, love and class personified. Diane Schuur, accompanied by Herbie Hancock, with their spin on a Stevie Wonder classic. It doesn't get much better than that.
Without question, one of the best/unique transformations of a hit song ever! Whoever arranged this for her was on top of their game at that time. The beauty is it keeps the original flavor of the song, but kicks it up a notch! Bravo!
One of the most soulful singers in history singing in perfect pitch, with the most perfect backing vocal group, accompanied by a peerless piano legend, playing a tribute to possibly the greatest pop composer of the last century (apologies to John and Paul)
I remember watching this performance on TV as a child when it first aired. It has stayed with me all these years. Seeing it now, I'm touched by such a beautiful and powerful performance.
Absolutely incredible...even as she sings at the beginning without an orchestra...and brail reading... And then then it all comes in.. So smooth...and that voice...up and down... sideways you name it ..and then just rolls it away... outstanding
The comments that I read here are people who sincerely appreciate beautiful music. The orchestra, back up singers and Diane's tantalizing voice the amazing piano player and her high pitch that reached the moon with some playful scat at the end. this performance absolutely made me cry. Thank YT for this splendid post.
An absolutely amazing person and singer............her talent is just so magnificent that she made Stevie cry.....and then smile.......she's just fantastic. She elicits all of these emotions almost simultaneously with her amazing voice. A true angel...
WOW!!! Powerful, VERY Powerful! I actually cried when I saw Stevie crying. Was that Take Six behind her at the first? Diane is one of the most amazing voices I've ever encountered. Thanks for posting this.
I have listened to you for so long that I hardly hear any other singer sing to me the way that you have sung to me and ALL of us. Thank you Diane Schur from the bottom of my heart, on an ordinary day - I just want to say, "I love you"
Notice how she hits the first note without a cue. It is because Schuur has perfect pitch memory and needs no cue. Also notice how she reads the words in braille with her right hand on the music stand.
Bravo to Stevie and Diane !! I have multiple medical issues that seriously hinder my mobility. I use a mobility scooter when I shop in grocery stores. It annoys me when people assume I also have mental deficiencies. Listened to Stevie way back when..."discovered" Diane in the 1980's!
I've waited SO LOOONG for this clip to make it from the Kennedy Center Awards. I copied it on my VCR when it originally aired and kept it for a while. Diane Schuur's performance ran in my heart and head for years. Then I somehow copied over this important performace. OMG, was I ever hurt about that. So, I thank you so very much from the bottom my heart for posting it. Stevie Wonder has been a tremendous part of my musical tapestry for many years and for more to come!!!!
Two of my all time favorite vocalists and humans. They have both added needed color and resonance to a world that can use just a little more authenticity and heart. Love to Dianne. Love to Stevie. Forevermore.
I saw her in a jazz club on new years eve many years ago, late 80s, she blew the doors off the place and tore the place up with her ballads and her band. Saw Stevie at Gladys knight concert, I was in second row center, packed rowdy house, lights went down, only 2 seats in front of me, down the aisle with flashlight comes an usher with Stevie and a gorgeous girl. He sat in front of me!!! Gladys of course was amazing ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was in awe of Ms. Schuur when I first witnessed this performance, and I'm so happy to find it again here on youtube! Thank you for sharing this truly inspired interpretation.

I hope everyone saw Herbie Hancock in the background on the piano supplementing this phenomenal performance by the truly gifted Diane Schuur.
YESS!!
Herbie's harmonic choices had ALOT to do with invoking the tears that were shed during this performance.......!!
Dang....!!!!!
@@cscientst Yes we saw him and we heard him bringing everything to the next level on piano! So amazing!
@@cscientst yep! That pedal point when Diane goes into the chorus changes the whole feeling of the song, and goes to a very deep and wonderful place.
This is one of my favorite Kennedy Center Awards performances. I had always been a fan of Diane Schuur but she outdid herself that night. Just brilliant. And you can tell that Stevie thought so too!
Stevie tearing up... WOW!
Still watching this...no words for this kind of talent except gifts from God.

Peerless is the 💯 right word
One of the greatest singers of all singer. Incredibly intonation, clarity and deeply soulful in every note.
