  • SwimSwam sat down with Olympic head coach and Arizona State head coach Bob Bowman to initially discuss Regan Smith announcing that she would be moving to Tempe to train at ASU. While we did discuss that, we had to start the podcast by asking the legendary coach of Michael Phelps what he thought of the 17-year-old David Popovici not only breaking the world record in the 100 free, but becoming the first man in textile under 1:43 in the 200m freestyle. This swim sandwiched Popovici between Michael Phelps and Yannick Agnel on the all-time performer's list, both athletes Bowman worked with in the past.
    Bowman gives great insight into what Popovici does well in the water and where his development could take him. He then proceeds to discuss Regan Smith moving to ASU and what that will look like for her future in terms of training. Bowman also touches on his rapidly growing Post-grad group after the addition of Chase Kalisz, Jay Litherland, and Sierra Schmidt (in addition to Smith) and the development of Leon Marchand from Olympian to NCAA champion to 2x world champion in both IM events this summer.

    I'm a Romanian fan of Mike Phelps, and it's wonderful hearing Mike's coach praising my teenager conational :) Romania only has ONE official competition swimming pool IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY ! That's how revolutionary a WR holder from Romania is ! Not to mention the intense car traffic fumes in Bucharest, I'm amazed he could do performance breathing that air.

    Waouh! So nice to hear from BobBowman about french team, Leon, Regan, programs etc.
    I m french, a guy that swam with (against) Leon Father and uncle, 52+… it s so interesting to see Bob s philosophy on training, his leadership and charisma. So much to come til Paris 2024, champions like Popovici, Leon, Milak, Italian amazing team, a new long distance king? Women side, we have this Canadian teenager, Australian squad and USA that needs to find a Ledecky successor. So excited!

    Great! Hearing Bob Bowman explain the composition of the new ASU team is really interesting (French television announced yesterday that the Hungarian junior world record holder in the 200m 4 im, Hubert Kos, was going to join them too). There are no such reports in France. I'm French, a fan of Léon Marchand and listening to Bob Bowman tell in detail Léon's performances in NCAA and especially in Budapest, is simply fascinating! I plan to translate it for French fans and post it on You Tube!!! Thank you for such an interesting video. :)

    17 years young awesome lad coming from a small east european country which has only 1 official olympic-size pool, with no financial support from sport minister, from government, a kid coming from a city like Bucharest which is very very polluted (not good for his lungs), that's incredible, perhaps, maybe, not sure, just saying that maybe he could have made better times whether David would have been developing himself into a country like USA or one of the big countries in EU, or imagine what he could achieve whether RO had a better infrastructure and not so polluted.

    • @danialexa7477
      @danialexa7477 Před rokem +7

      You might be wrong about this Razvan! The environment, family support and culture is the one that helped David, be who he is today. Money and growing up in USA is not always the best way to become great!

    • @rsr.1409
      @rsr.1409 Před rokem +1

      @@danialexa7477 we would never know, but in some terms you are correct because living in USA or a big EU country or a less polluted city does not guarantee your success in sport. It's just that the infrastructure there is incredible. Reading my initial comment second time I notice it doesn't sound how I wanted 😅.
      Regarding his development, I am partially agree with you, indeed 100% the "David Team" is great, awesome and they did everything in their power to support this kid to accomplish these results, but not agree with culture and environment.
      Anyway, I'm more than happy he chose to stay and compete for his country, he's an honorable teenager.
