  • Gold Medal Minute presented by SwimOutlet.com (www.swimoutlet.com/)
    In this Gold Medal Minute takeover of the SwimSwam Podcast, we dive deep on butterfly with Coach Bob Bowman.
    During this pandemic, the COVID (coronavirus) shutdown has impact my brain chemistry in a bad way, bringing me down. Talking with The Butterfly Guru, the man behind Michael Phelps, was the perfect medicine. I hope it's good medicine for you too. We cover age group butterfly challenges to elite training to what swimmers and coaches need to be thinking when striving for butterfly mastery.
    We all know Bob's fly knowledge runs deep. We know Bob's an Olympic coach, a hall of famer, and that he helms Arizona State University, but did you know Bob was a flyer his entire competitive career? "I swam it going back to summer league," Bob explained. I loved learning that and more in this 30-minute butterfly swimming clinic.
    SWIMNERD QUESTION
    Where did Bob swim in college and how fast was his 100 yard butterfly?
    Also, if you have butterfly questions you'd like to ask Bob, share them here. I'll ask Bob to drop back in. I think this is a topic we could cover again and again.

    Great stuff!! This put me in a better mind set to train fly!!! The past few weeks I was doing set of 100 fly for conditioning but my stroke was starting to fall apart towards the second 50. After watching this I'm gonna dial it back to 25's and 50's. Maybe hit a 75. Keep the stroke integrity.

    What was wrong with the training in 1970’s- Counsilman Era?
    What are some distinctions?

    • @SwimSwamTV
      @SwimSwamTV  Před 4 lety

      Nothing... This is Mel, and my age group coach, Franke Bell, used Doc's method... I now know, bc of this, our training was well ahead of the curve... I am a child of the 70s and 80s training, 100k per week, and it worked.... I do think the speed and strength training is far better now. Interestingly, Bob is a mix of the "honest work" type training + speed/strenght.

    • @rickamira4292
      @rickamira4292 Před 4 lety

      SwimSwam Thanks. Personally , I think that in those days when I competed, we swam TOO much -- not enough SPEED WORK during the season -- and not enough tapering prior to a swim meet - Needed more stretching, strength training , and speed training from the beginning AND more individual training according to body type- And MORE TECHNIQUE TRAINING........If you competed today, AND YOU WERE THE BEST, in retrospect, what would be the changes, assuming YOU were your own coach-- More video analysis, lactate blood testing, meditation, etc. Thanks for your response-. This was a great interview-. What do you think DOC Counsilman would say? I am still coaching!! I swam with IRA KLEIN... at Queens College, New York

    Mel, it was rude to put Coleman on the spot by asking about his 200 fly PBs in front of Bob.

    • @SwimSwamTV
      @SwimSwamTV  Před 4 lety +4

      Sorry...it's slipped out... but I thought it was important. We all train with swimmers who are elites, but they BRING IT in practice everyday. They keep you honest and make you great...and many swimmers who are not elites swim well beyond PBs. They WOW you with improvement. I swam with a guy, Eric Toppe, who did not have talent. He earned every time drop imaginable. On pure grit he went from 0 to making the Olympic Trials final over 4 year. I strongly believe you can achieve a lot in swimming based entirely on how much work you're willing to invest.
