Google Ads Website Call Conversion Tracking with GTM

- Call Extensions are extra snippets you can add to your paid Google Ads to display a phone number directly on the ad. But what if the user comes to the page and sees a different ad? You can use the Website Call Conversion Tracking feature to automatically change around the number on your website so it displays the number the user saw on the ad and that way transfer conversion information to Google Ads. In this video I’m going to show you how to accomplish this with GTM.

Setting up and testing worked exactly as you show. A Few Questions: 1) How long does it take the data to show up? 2) If my GoogleAds and GoogleAnalytics are tied together, will the data show up in both? 3) Do I need to set up a goal in Google Ads for this data to show up in reports? 4) Do you have a video with instructions for doing that? Hi I'm hoping you can help answer my question which I am sure i'm over complicating!. I created a add with a extension call snippet, but if someone clicks my ad and then clicks the phone number on my landing page(same #) instead of the call snippet, that click on the site is not tracked in conversions right? So do I need to set up two conversions, one to track the call extension and one to track the clicks on the phone number on my landing page? thanks!!

That was a great video! Could you please explain how do I limit phone calls from our mobile website to daytime business hours? I don’t want to limit the submission of lead forms. The only place I’ve seen this option is in a Call Extension but I don’t want the phone number appearing on the Ads.

When checking to see if the tags are working the debug pop up in the bottom left hand corner says "Attempting to auto-replace" "Could not gt number: no ad click.". However when I click "force" the number is replaced. After I follow the ads via Google Ads I do not see the number being replaced, do you know what the issue could be?

To tracking the calls do I need to insert the tracking code of call extension into the backend of my site or all this can be tracked without adding the backend code like this?

Great video as always. However, this is for integration with Google Ads. Is there a way to set up this functionality which is not connected to Google Ads (i.e. tracking both if a user clicks on the 'call now' button and/or if they dial a specific number?
you would need to use a third party software such as call rails

Thanks for video very helpful. Only thing I get confused on is when you mention Google Ad extensions instead of just website call tracking. My understanding the call extension gets set up on account/campaign level in Google Ads to tracking calls from call extensions. But in this case the video showing how to set up call tracking for website number.

This is very cool, but I don't see clients that count on local business particularly liking the idea of users seeing a different phone number on their website. I track clicks on phone numbers, but that doesn't mean the call actually went through. Too bad Google doesn't provide a way to change/track the ad # in the href attribute and not the number visible to the user. Love your content, thanks for sharing! Til next time---jules ;)
Have you think of using 3rd party service like callrail to tracking the phone calls? I think they can track the phone call and even record the phone call.....

no, you would need your own custom call tracking for this

Hi Julian, this is a great video. Thank you for the tutorial!! I have a question. Would it be better to use the Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag rather than the Google Ads Calls from Website Conversion tag for instances when a phone number is not displayed? The Call from Website Conversion tag has you enter a phone number, but we have instances where we use an icon to click to call. My assumption is this tag will not work correctly since the phone number is not displayed.
You would simply install both. It wouldn't be better
@@MeasureSchool I had to stop using Buttons/Images because phones would Click to call and Desktop users could not see the number to call from their home phones. All my sites are text numbers now with a Tag (if using Google Ads Tracking). "Call Now" Buttons look cool, but have limitations in the real world.
Hi Julian. Does this only replace the actual phone number for the Google forwarding number on the landing page that the user arrives after clicking the Google Ad? Example scenario: The landing page (after clicking on Google Ad) does not have a phone number and then the user goes to the contact page on the website... In this case, would this automatic phone number replacement still work on the website contact page?? Thanks!!
if the contact page has a number, yes
@@MeasureSchool Thanks for your answer. In my case the contact page does have a phone number, but it didn't work out. I see the same ol' phone number like we always had it there (no visible google forwarding number) even after testing and clicking in our own ad. Is it possible that Google does not replace special characters? Our phone number starts with +41 instead of 0041 ... I don't know if this theory makes sense :/ Any thoughts? I've got an additional question - my goal is to track all phone calls from the website within a single conversion setting in Adwords. Is it possible that settings from your video would replace a phone number under a mobile "call us" button? I've tried doing that, but Google script replaced all the phone numbers placed as a text within the website, buttons remained unchanged :(

How does it work when someone make a call from a website? I understand doing it from mobile, but how it works in a website in a computer? They will click the number and then... ???
it opens up their call program (e.g Skype) - But I never see call extensions on the desktop version of google

The Google Ads option you are talking about is "Track calls to a phone number on a website", right? So it will track when someone call me after clicking in the phone number at my website? (like through a desktop?)
I mean, in your example, if someone clicks on the number at the 'demoshop website', what will happen? Will it open their 'call program'? My question is what happens after someone click on that number on my website? Because I think this is very uncommon to someone make a call this way, so what is the value in using this kind of 'phone conversion' from Google Ads?

Hello, I'm getting the following error message after adding the #google-wcc-debug tag to the URL am trying to test: "Could not get number: error #86401.", but when forcing the code it actually replaces the displayed number of the page with nines (999 + ...my country number format)... how do I know the tracking is correct?

I got it working after doing two things Step 1: clear your browsing history. I was having problems because it was loading a previous version of the page. Step 2: after you clear your browsing history, click on one of your ads and see if it changes out the number. If it still isn't working after clearing your browsing history you'll need to contact Google for help.

A little something I've discovered in my case: If your format is written like +32 (0)489 99 99 99, better leave the "+"-sign out when entering the phone number in Tag Manager.

@@kristianalexeus5570 I added a second extension, "Call Extension Tracking". Before I only had "Calls from Ads". This seems to have fixed the problem since now my "calls from website" conversions started counting.
Julian this is great, but can you do this on two different phone numbers? The documentation says yes, but it's not clear on whether that is multiple numbers for the same phone number or different numbers. Please advise! :)
I know that if you try this in GTM it doesn't work, because it will just run the phone conversion tracking that has higher priority (the latest one you created).
