- You can set up website call conversion tracking through two methods for Google Ads with Google Tag Manager. One involves Google Analytics (creating a custom event for phone call clicks) and one does not (dynamic swap method).
This video shows how to do both so you can choose what makes the most sense for your situation.

Thank you very much for the content, it helped me a lot and also clarified things that I already knew but was not clear why it should be done. So thank you very much!
You are most welcome! Glad to hear it was helpful.😄
This is a fantastic resource - thank you. My question is with the preview and debug - are we operating under the assumption that the code from GAds is already installed on your website thus enabling the conversion tag to work? Did I miss a step? Or, if the code from GAds is not loaded to the website can we ad the GTM that we just created to the backend on the website? Sorry - newb here - I need a little more help than most.
Hi Wendy, you're welcome. Glad you found it useful.
When you talk about preview and debug, you're referring to testing to see if the dynamic call swap conversion tracking is working, right? If so, what we're doing around the 5:00 mark is indeed loading the code from GAds. We are taking the conversion ID and conversion label from Google Ads and installing it on the website (via Google Tag Manager) through a Google Ads conversion tag.
Let me know if that solves things for you. If you don't have Google Tag Manager on your site, that is the one thing that would need to installed first. Here's a resource showing how to do it in 4 minutes: czcams.com/video/jjIsn-pniMw/video.html
And here's another if you've got a bit more time with some more background on the cool stuff Tag Manager does: czcams.com/video/pMdjLBisDHI/video.html
Good luck and Godspeed to you.
You are amazing - thank you so much!! God bless!@@rooted-digital
I've got one problem though. When I set the trigger All Pages in the dynamic swap method, the tag triggers without even clicking the phone number. Wouldn't it be counted as a false conversion?
Good clarifying question. With the dynamic swap method, the tag actually will never trigger on clicking the phone number link. It only triggers when the tracking number (that has been dynamically inserted on the page) is dialed.
If you want to track the actual clicks on the phone number link you need to use the second method that is explained in this video. That starts around the 10:40 mark or so. Let me know if that clears things up at all.
@@rooted-digital Yes, that makes much more sense now. Thank you!
Very welcome. Best of luck!
Can you track more than one phone number on a webpage with a call tracking tag for built for each in GTM? How can I test to ensure each tag is firing properly when different a number is clicked on? Thanks!
You can track more than 1 phone number. This video has two different approaches for call tracking. The first one shows a "dynamic swap" method, where a phone number is visually replaced with another number dynamically when a visitor comes from Google Ads. Calls to the dynamic number are logged as conversions and the call is forwarded to the actual number.
The second approach may be what you're looking for here. You track the actual clicks of the phone number on the page. This is great for businesses with a lot of mobile traffic. That starts around 10:41. You can track ALL phone number link clicks. And you can differentiate between what numbers are called / clicked using the link_url and / or link_text "event parameters".
This additional video I've linked below is about email tracking. Even through it's email instead of phone, the same principle applies with the event parameters:
czcams.com/video/XIif73lkVKg/video.html
IN terms of testing to ensure that the tag is firing properly, you need to hit the "Preview" button in the upper right of GTM after your tag and trigger are set up. That enables GTM preview mode where you can confirm that it's working as it should be. This will work with the GA4 event but won't test Google Ads conversions since it isn't Google Ads traffic.
Best wishes!
@@rooted-digital Thank you for responding! I have a client that wants to track calls (not clicks) on 4 different phone numbers displayed on their website. I have a GAds Website call tag created for each in GTM but I am only seeing activity for 1 out of the 4 phone numbers. All tags are setup the exact same except for their unique conversion label and phone number. Trigger is set to "all pages". Do you have any idea why I do not see activity on the other 3 numbers? Thank you!
Question can we do all pages and then create a separate trigger based on the landing in one tag? thanks
Are you trying to use the first method or the second? And can you share the specific example of what you're trying to do? If you can clarify your question a bit more I can try to help.
Please help with one thing
1. I implented this step by step and it is working perfectly with one Landing page.
2. When i implented it again for 2 other landing pages it did not work. The triggers are not firing.
One addition i did was that i added one more condition that page url should be the landing page.
After the first landing page worked, i deleted the other methods. But now others are not working. Please see if you can think of a solution. Thank you.
If I'm understanding correctly, the issue relates to your trigger. If you have a trigger condition that says the page URL should be the landing page, the trigger (and therefore the dynamic call swap) will only be valid on that page. You have a couple options:
- Remove that page URL condition so that the dynamic call swap will be valid on all pages on your site. It will still only show up with visits from Google Ads
- Update your trigger so that you have multiple pages that the trigger will fire on. Check out option #1 or option #2 in this article here. www.analyticsmania.com/post/or-condition-in-google-tag-manager-triggers-3-options/
what if your country is not supported what to do? should i just use other conversion?
If your country isn’t supported for the dynamic swap method, I’d personally opt for the second approach that tracks link clicks on the phone number link. That method starts about halfway through this video.
Hi, God bless you! Thanks for the videos they're very helpful. 😊
Just wondering if showing the phone numbers in the GA4 reports does that violate any Google policies?
Hello there! I'll add a slight caveat by saying this is not certified legal advice. And then I'll also say that you should be fine in situations like this, since the only phone numbers that would show up in your reports would be your very own phone numbers from your website (no customer information, etc).
Thanks for watching and for the thoughtful question. Have a great one!
the video is great, straight to the point and concise. brother i would love to get some assistance from you. after setting up the tag and try to test it using the #google-wcc-debug, it shows 999-999-9999 but then it automatically switches it back to the actualy display number. can you please advice on what to do?
Hi there. I am not sure if I've seen this before. I'm curious, how long does it show the 999-999-9999? And if you reload the URL with the #google-wcc-debug, does the 999-999-9999 show again?
My hunch is that it's working just fine. I'm sorry I can't give you more specifics since I haven't encountered this myself. Best wishes to you.
@rooted-digital appriciate the response 🙏 it stays for about 10 seconds. Then it switches right back. On my website the phone number shows without the +1 but if you have hover over the number on desktop it'll show as +1**********. If that makes sense, I'll keep looking. I appriciate you
