      I was smiling and rolling my eyes at the corny ass rips from the original, but I still think it’s one of the best sequels ever made. It still has the right spirit, and was bigger. It was so cool to revisit after, what, 30/40 years, and see their stories wrapped up beautifully. Most sequels come too soon and shit the bed. Doesn’t hurt that Tom Cruise is a vampire.

    Finally saw this movie last weekend, loved it. Way better than the original, IMO. Thing is, they don't make movies like this anymore. Practical effects, a tough-guy hero who doesn't get gutted by the writers, no politics... loved it. Wish Hollywood would do more of this.

    • @mobiusflammel9372
      @mobiusflammel9372 Před rokem +24

      I don't really think TGM fits *quite* in that mold given so much of the movie is explicitly focused on Maverick's vulnerabilities, uncertainty about his future and his survivor's guilt. I'm not really sure they were trying to portray him as a stereotypical tough guy as much as someone trying to navigate both the march of time and his own life. In that sense it's a different thing than 80s/90s action heroes who were often... let's say, less concerned about character depth.
      But I absolutely agree that it was a great film and the focus on practical effects was refreshing.

    • @NotRiansLuke
      @NotRiansLuke Před rokem +24

      @@mobiusflammel9372 I largely agree -- - by "tough guy" I didn't mean to imply an invulnerable hero. I meant a classic masculine hero who hasn't been ripped apart and "put in his place" by the writers.

    BTW another anecdote -- I was an F-16 instructor at Luke AFB. We would occasionally bring a few jets to Fallon to fight the Top Gun students. The guys at Fallon run a class act and just the brief before the fight is the stuff of legends. My first fight was against a couple students in a Rhino and it was like shooting fish in a barrel. My 2nd fight was against an older and lighter F-16 flown by one of their instructors. An hour later we're in the bar debriefing the mission and I was the fish in the barrel, it's amazing how an incredible pilot can make a good pilot look plain-old bad (and I was in my main jet, the instructor who smoked me basically flew F-16s in his spare time). Great school and great movie.

I still fly in planes but they usually have Southwest written on the side and I'm simply a passenger. I've been considering signing up for classes at a local airport to learn to fly. There are a lot of people (like myself) who read stories like this in awe.

      Flares can't stop a radar guided SAM. A plane at hypersonic speed can't maneuver. Why don't just use cruise missiles to take out that kind of target? There's a lot of basic inaccuracies in the movie. They could do the exact same thing on the movie showing the real thing, it seems that some people are just lazy to think about how to do it.

    My younger son watched the original movie so many times, it drove his brother crazy, but my dad enjoyed it, even if it was a movie. My older son got to go inside a TG meeting once as a kid. I told his teachers if he draws pics of bombs & missiles , don't worry because that's what his grandpa worked with. I mean being apart of an army that invaded a foreign country that did nothing to ours and killing innocent civilians and destroying their land. Being apart of that, If that's greatness sure .. now what they do post military can be the "greatness" . If you want to attach greatness to fighting war, look at the Ukranians .. now that is greatness. Defending their lands and people and fighting to the last person for it.

      What a gigantic heap of bulls**t. Which war are you referring to… Afghanistan or Iraq? The former was a response to thousands of innocent office workers in NY jumping to their deaths and splattering on the pavement. The later removed a dictator and was universally welcomed around the world AND by the people of Iraq… until the Iranians and Al Quieda sent in insurgents to tarnish the victory, destabilize the country and embarrass the Americans. Don’t believe me? There’s plenty of accounts of the Iraqis, though cautiously at first, embracing the Americans and their freedom before the insurgency. Read Codename: Johnny Walker for starters… an Iraqi who disliked the Americans at first but eventually concluded they were there to legitimately help the people of that country and risked his own life to join and work with them. Face it, you’re a simple-minded f**k… it’s easy to just accept what you’re told and get back in line.
      As for Ukraine, the Russians should’ve never invaded, but again… the simple-minded f**k doesn’t dive deeper into studying the subject. Are you aware of Ukrainians murdering civilians in disputed territories before the war? Read any interesting accounts of the Nazi battalion that the Ukrainians employ and tolerate as a “necessary evil”? Let me guess, you are complete unaware of the “greatness” of some of the war crimes they have been committing…

      I hear that. People who have shown themselves strong in the battle, and know the battle, seem less likely to "need" always to fight.
      One never knows, but as long as The Complex is so large and seemingly impermeable, I'm not certain that if a well-informed, well-intentioned, battle-proven, intelligent man/woman "got the job", that it would make a bit of difference at this point. I bought a ticket and sat down. After purchasing a small bag of peanut eminems which I placed in my bag.
    The credits were over, the movie began and
    I started laughing out loud right away. I felt like it was an exact continuation of where things left off.... as 30 years have gone by.
    The movie exceeded any expectations that I might have had. I laughed and I cried. When I left, I thought wow I think I might have to go see that movie again. I can't remember the last time I said that if ever. Something about this movie struck a nerve and and trigger a lot of emotions for me. I'm truly grateful that this was not a remake of Top Gun, but a continuation with a lot of great messages. Yes one was the 1 that you mentioned about it's the man in the seat flying the plane that makes the difference. When he came up with his energy-maneuverability charts and really changed how dogfighting was analyzed, managed, and trained, the experts at Wright-Patterson HQ were pissed off because Boyd came up with it instead of them. After that, they poisoned the well. They couldn't stop his technical brilliance and his accomplishments but they could use their influence to shove down his career and they sure made it a full-time job to do that. He was stuck for years at the Pentagon without really having a job. They kept getting him an incentive ride in an F-16 at Andrews AFB and then canceling it an hour before he was scheduled to actually go. They did things like that to screw around with him, and it was all just political BS, so lame. I guess he was supposed to present this brilliant work to Wright-Patterson HQ and let them present it all over the USAF like it was their work. Man what a great interview!! This man was very humble, EXTREMELY knowledgeable and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire video. I was lucky enough to be stationed on the U.S.S. Eisenhower, CVN 69 in the mid 90's and I can tell you that the movie Top Gun was EASILY responsible for 50% of the people being in the Navy! As an AO I got to work with the plane air crews and talk to several pilots when we were off duty and they said the same thing! The carrier scenes were AWESOME and definitely gave an idea of how a flight deck can be...organized chaos we used to call it. This movie hit EVERY button and some of them twice. It's been a long time since an entire theater was laughing, crying, hooping and hollering that way, and at the end a very hearty clap and applause...dayum I LOVED IT.

    When Dave Berke mentioned that there is a significant gap between a senior instructor and the best student, it made the scene from the original movie where Maverick went after Viper have a much clearer picture of how high the stakes were and just how "ballsy" Maverick was to put himself out there and really test himself and find out what he's really made of.

When you’re a pilot you realise very quickly there is no such thing, just different types of pilots who do some things better and some things worse than other pilots, fast jet pilots don’t make good commercial pilots for example without addressing certain personality traits, or helicopter pilots etc. However, any current professional pilot can fly a fast jet with equivalent training, and any good pilot could do very well at top gun school. Throw into the mix certain countries pilots have done much better in military exercises than their Top Gun equivalents
