It’s TOP GUN WEEK, and Richard Ryan has brought on two Fighter Pilot veterans Chase Hobby and JB Carlson. These guys are the real deal, and we wanted to see how these movies hold up.

Are we missing any iconic fighter pilot films??
Ayo black rifle is the only coffee I drink
Firebirds
Fighter pilot video games maybe? Air Combat, Ace combat
Iron Eagle
Sky Fighters
The Hot Shots planes are Folland Gnats; used as RAF trainers as well as lightweight fighters in some foreign air forces.
They were kind of Gnats.. But they could only get the Indian ones, the Ajeet 2s for the film because of the price.. (I know, same plane, just built under license). The British made ones were all but scrap by then, the rest were private and didn't want to sell
@@utbdoug Thanks--that's good to know!
The red arrows used the gnat before the hawk was brought in to service (around 1979).
@@davidbunston3272 Thanks!
That or hawker hunters
New Top Gun movie had no business being as good as it was. Loved it.
I did really enjoy Top Gun: A New Hope
"Can you save him?" "I don't know, I'm not a very good doctor..." - LOL so many good lines in that movie.
The real challenge when watching the original Hot Shots is to find scenes, or even individual shots, that don't have some kind of gag.
Even the credits included 2 recipes and a list of things to do after watching the movie.
Flight of the Intruder was actually written by an A-6 pilot and Vietnam War combat veteran. The first two books are super-heavy on the details of naval aviation procedures and carrier operations. Well worth reading. Later books in the series are more of political thrillers.
nice i didnt know there was a book
Thanks for the heads up, mate. Much appreciated.
The movie was filmed onboard ISS Independence, as well, so when Chase mentions ‘that’s what a real ready room looks like’ that’s because it is a real ready room.
Yup........Stephen Coonts is the author. Hoping they make a film on the second book "Intruders" where the main character is assigned to a Marine squadron. My opinion much better than the first book.
@@AngryMarine-il6ej Haven't they retired the intruder?
Started my military career in the aviation field in active duty Navy. Was an AO...VFA-106 and VFA-34. Was a fun time! We always had some awesome pilots.
....and then
Thank you Heroes. I serve 20 years in Navy as a computer guy. I always get choked up when I see real vets. Love you guys
I love videos like this with veterans and other professionals reviewing movies!
My grandfather was a A6 mechanic on the forrestal
Gotta love the incessant use of "Danger Zone" in Top Gun lol
Top Secret! Probably the best pseudo-thentic war movie about surfing, shooting, and Nazis of 1984. And just like Val Kilmer, the first exposure to the trials of East German resistance fighters.
I was born in 1983. Top Gun was an influential movie in my life as along with other classics as Navy SEALs starring Charlie Sheen. I really think I grew up in the best awesome cheesiest genre of war movies ever. Top Gun wasn't too bad and the new one looks cool and entertaining as movies should be but some of this is clearly not real lol. I literally remember sitting down and kind of bonding with my Dad watching these. He was an old school guy born in '35 had me at 50. I think he almost went to Korea but it ended just as he got out training. Cause my Dad said back than you either went to college or the military. He also said the judges would sometimes let guys chose military over jail/prison. Not sure how true that is, my dad was also a talker lol. My Great Uncle also slept in the backyard after he got back from WWII according to family cause he didn't want to sleep in the house.
Yep that did happen .
Was just able to finally watch Top Gun 2 Maverick, & it was a good bit of nostalgia as I am 44 & Top Gun was yet another Cold War era movie that made me want to spend life serving in the military (& of course, you want to be a Navy pilot & buy a crotch rocket after watching it). I hope you guys can get a review video about the sequel out soon to add your input about that story. I was hoping to hear from Dave "Real Deal Dave" Burke on this, but this video is great.
Love the vids and the coffee. Watching these always makes my day!
Love that you guys started with Flight of the Intruder, I absolutely love that movie and almost nobody I know has seen or heard about it.
Really? Most people I know rank it in their top 10 war/pilot movies.
Now you guys have to show them Ace Combat 7: Skies unknown. the one thing that you must do, is have whoever is playing the footage MUST USE EXPERT CONTROLES in order to get the full expirence.
Why would they want to play a simulation? They did it for real!
@@JordanJimmyDavison I think it would be cool to see the crazy stuff that ace combat does. like the arsenal bird, the XO-2 wyvern, rail guns, the reaction of these guys to the absolute lunacy that can be ace combat would be priceless. Especially when they see the prevalence of post stall maneuvers and the lack of worrying about G forces
This would have to be the best video I've seen..thankyou for sharing..much respect .💜
Say what you will, but that "One Admirals Daughter" Penny looks DAMN good for a 51 year old.
Combining Top Gun and Hot Shots is always a win. Have you guys thought about reacting to submarine movies? Some suggestions for the list if so:
- The Hunt for Red October
- Crimson Tide
- Das Boot
- Hunter Killer
- Down Periscope (a must have for the list, haha)
awe das boot was great
Brings back both good and nightmarish memories. Nothing like trying to land on a carrier at night in bad weather.
Soo I went to Sheetz the other day and got a black rifle espresso and this is the second time I got a bad batch it tasted as I imagined juice of pampers would taste
Contact them directly
Love you guys been drinking your coffee for a bit thanks for your service 😘
My dad was a USAF fighter pilot (1950-1970). He also did a stint in the navy, flying the A-4D. His favorite a/c? Toss up between the F-86 or the F-104.
I was an extra in this movie, two scenes: suiting up for the strike and walking by the camera on the hangar bay. Willem Dafoe is a righteous dude - Helluva nice guy.
You should have Recon Marines or Marines in general react to Generation kill!
The Saab 9-3 convertible commercial with the Saab Viggen flying over the convertible was awesome too.
im just always blown away by the level of skill the diverse bunch of bloody legends you guys continue to present to us mere mortals seriously all of you lot are farken legends big cheers from oz
These guys are fantastic and hilarious. Keep it up, BRCC!
Thanks for the reaction on these movies & keep up the great work 👍🏻
These Veterans React videos aren't going anywhere. Glad you enjoy them.

Always love the A6, called it "The Quail" growing up
Love the vids and coffe
Thanks buddy, we appreciate you!
@@BlackRifleCoffeeCompany you should collab with Nikko ortiz
Awesome episode!
If I make it out and get my organs and life patched back up to working order, I'll definitely be buying some coffee at some point to support you guys. I appreciate your work and comedy alot
Yeah my fighter squadron along with US P-8 crew had a pre showing of Top Gun Maverick a couple of days ago. That movie kicked ass!
Flight of the Intruder brought me back to the days of sitting in the cockpit running system checks as a Fire Control Tech on the A6E TRAM.
VMAT 202. Miss that bird.
Saw the early access premiere of Top Gun Maverick, it was awesome
Highly recommend seeing it in theaters with really good audio like Imax or Dolby
I love the RAF scenes in Dunkirk.
Flight of the Intruder.... One of my fav Navy movies......
Lloyd Bridges was in the movie Airplane! His character in Hot Shots was like a homage to the one from Airplane. The running gag about his physical issues.
Tomcats were JUST finishing sundowning when I joined, I remember seeing a couple fly over Pensacola while I was going to A-school.
ty for your service
Those Jets in the movie Hot shots were British Folland Gnats.
I'm prior Navy. I was an AMS. When we watched movies with "Hollywood" dog fights going on, my shop would be like "NO NO NO NO!!! YOU JUST BUSTED HYDRAULIC LINES!!!" I sailed aboard the Roosevelt and the Enterprise. The stateroom comment made me laugh. I was enlisted, but we enlisted guys had to deal with that too! On the Roosevelt, my squadron's berthing was under the catapults. After a while, it kind of drummed you to sleep. The Enterprise, however... our berthing was under the arresting wires and next to the sea sparrow launchers... You'd be sound asleep and you'd hear a loud thud and the wires winding back into position. And then once in the Persian Gulf, the sea sparrow launcher went off... Scared the absolute bejesus out of me. The Alert Five was called, and I was on the flight deck for three days straight for Operation: Desert Fox.
I was on the other side of you in Desert Fox on the Vinson. I was also an AMS and was at RTC in November ‘96-January’97. Tomcat guy back in the day.
Great video, ill be seeing maverick opening day tomorrow at 12:30 lol Cant Wait!
Enjoy!!! 🍿
I love it but you need to do 1 on the old movie war dogs.
I’m so glad the put my favorite movie got shots in this
Very cool fun fact you added about Tom Cruise.
The Tomcats are awesome looking still to this day.
Good stuff!
Hobby's MAGNIFICENT Magnum P.I. is on point. Wish I could grow a glorious lip ferret like that. Also, berthings under the flight deck SUCK BALLS! I was on the Peleliu (LHA-5) and our berthing was in the fore port side, so when we were at flight ops the harriers and cobras would be taking off literally 6 feet above our heads, and the chains and shit getting pulled across the deck. Super shitty when you just got off a mid watch and have to be up for muster in 3 hours.
Black Sheep Squadron was a great TV show about the pacific war pilots and the iconic F4U Corsair.
This was fun, thanks
That plane from hotshots is a real thing. I don't remember the number designation but it is referred to as a "gnat".
I feel kinda special Ed Harris's character in Topgun: Mavrick was using the callsign I used while in the Navy. now if only I had reached rear Admiral upper half too instead of Commander.
Can you get some A-10 Pilots in for a sesh? I want to see what those guys are like
WARTHOGS!!!!! 💖💖💖💖💖
You guys are funny as 💩 😂😂 & nothing but 🫶🏻🙌🏻💯🍻🍻🍻 for you guys giving back …. Especially to those who served & deserve better!!
Would love to see you guys check out the movie Soldier with Kurt Russell
Maybe they could go live reviewing the whole movie from start to end credit, hehe
Chase Hobby looks like Demo Ranch’s long lost dad lol
J.B. is Doughnut Operator's big brother.
I have a theory that in the second battle, the lead MiG, was the one that Maverick flipped off earlier. I he did get a pretty good look at the plane and number.
*MiG Pilot:* That's the bastard that flipped me off!!! Get him!!
Great episode
Would be awesome if you could get Dan Pedersen for one of these. I’ve reading his book “Top Gun: An American Story” and its incredibly interesting: the scientific approach when starting Top Gun, how everything was going to shet in Vietnam, their motivation and ethics.
No mention of the Sandies from Intruder!
never heard of flight of the intruder or the right stuff, but on the list to buy. great video :P love hot shots and top gun.
We're here to add to the watch list.
Flight of the Intruder is a great movie for its time. Bonus points for it because it showed the ship I was currently serving on during filming.
@@toddsharp4245 oh cool... what is your role on the ship?
@@BlackRifleCoffeeCompany true lol
@@spookerredmenace3950 there is a scene in the movie with 2 actors talking with a pier in the background. One of the ships was the USS DUNCAN FFG-10. I was an Electricians Mate 1St class, was also one of the ships Rescue Swimmers.
A lot of movies were filmed around Long Beach CA. TERMINATOR, last scene of the first “Fast and Furious” when Vin, flipped his car, was all filmed on or near the base.
Top Gun Maverick still trailer gives me goose bumps.
My dad flew the F-4 from 1967 to 1977-78 but this F-4 was the RF-4 . The difference is he shot everything with a camera. Vietnam was different because he would go in before the bombers take pictures then go into the same area after to see how much damage was done just in case they would go in again for a second round. Operation Linebacker was his 3rd tour 1972 and almost didn't come home. I
I would love to see a red dawn reaction 1984 version
As a non pilot and or vet. There is only ONE flight movie! IRON EAGLE!!
Love these guys, great show!
GO BLUE & GOLD, I went in 97 as an AD, hand to GOD, we had a mustang. If you don't know an Enlisted become an Officer. This guy knew every inch of the aircraft, preformed his own Dailys and Turnarounds on the aircraft he was going to fly. Signed off plain captain heck our CDI paperwork if you could answer his questions or explain to him what or why something was located or wrong. He never as an Officer needed to be qualified as a Plain Captain or CDI in 110, he just set the standard for both Enlisted and Officer. Was a calm and cool cat, humbled, yet had a drive like no other Officer I have yet to come across. If the aircraft had an issue, he was one of the first to come in and slap on the nasty cranial someone else was assigned and get dirty to make sure his Plain that had his name was up and running. Never came off smug like some O's do, I never forget you LT Atherholt. He was the kind of guy that just made you want to be better without ever saying or talking about it. Did a couple of det's with him, I left as a Senior Chief, one of only a handful of men to leave a mark on me besides my father and grandfather. I hope out there in the fleet there are some Mustangs like Atherholt, hold them close, learn, respect and appreciate them.
These navy guys with those hand movements...
There’s a ton of vets that are truck drivers so need to do one on trucking movies
Where's their links in the description below?
Can you save him, I’m not sure I’m not a very good doctor, That’s Hilarious lol
Can you guys react to the nut shot training scene on Super Troopers I meant. The whale scene on Reno 911 would be hilarious too
There was a guy drinking a beer and a cocktail at the same time
I work with a navy pilot that flew the F-14. He patrolled for soviet subs.
Hmmm...........remember this line? "Fighter pilots make movies, bomber pilots make historyyyyyyy!!!!!! Anyone care to dispute that one???
HEY EVAN, LECTURE ME MANLETT
Why isn't your guest websites included in the description with links?
Would be cool if you could get some Aussie vets on these
You do know for a lot of these movies especially top gun they had actual my navy pilots fly all these stunts so years everything is possible
I'd like to see if you can get C.W. Lemoine (Author/pilot) on your series. :)
Need some Airwolf
Thanks a lot. Can't get that theme song out of our head now. 😂
where do you find the previous episode? should be a link in the description.
Here you go: czcams.com/video/DkwNZVsgWKM/video.html
The middle guy is right, Flight of the Intruder is one of the best fighter jet movies. It actually has substance which is what Top Gun lacks.
@Black Rifle Coffee Company
Those planes are Gnats. They are old UK fighters.
Bring on some Submarine or Tank guys.
Talked about Tom Wolfe Book\Movie, The Right Stuff... Did they ever do the review? As the Dark Star Scene is right out of the Book and the Movie. In Top Gun Maverick....
Bat 21 boys. So great.
Loved hot shots
That was a fun episode.
If your interested in F 14s check out Ward Carrol's channel.
Well maybe I’m dumb but that movie Maverick did over a 125 million one weekend.
What about reacting to Battlestar Galactica (the recent one)?
I want to see Chealsea manning react to Soldier Girl.
I'm wondering how good a fighter pilot would be at play the game Afterburner or landing the plane on the carrier in the NES game Top Gun
Here's a crazy idea, take the battle of hoth and the deathstar attack and have them review it.
"you could be my backseater anytime"
Flight of the Intruder rocks, read the book too.
Be good to see a reaction to Danger Close.
Tank vets!
