    Top Gun was never about the story line it was about getting lost in the flying footage. I was on active duty when the first one hit the big screen in '86 and the whole squadron went to see it together. So imagine 40 "real" fighter jocks laughing and critiquing everything on the screen after leaving a "choir practice" at the O'club. We loved the cinematography combined with the tunes. Can't wait for the new version to get lost in the fiction and flying scenes for a couple of hours.

    I think the arguments around this (and other) films fall into two categories:
    1) those who don't seem to understand movies are make-believe. These are the people that insist the actors were flying the planes and doing all their own stunts, etc. There are just some people that will never grasp that movies are not the same as documentaries (and nowadays, even documentaries may not be as real as you think)
    2) the uber-critical subject-matter experts. This is NOT directed at Mover. He shares the nit-pick stuff just for education and entertainment value. He still understands that movies have to be entertaining. That's why you get a scene where pilots jump in a plane and are firing off the cat or rocketing down the runway, because taking time in a movie to show a walkaround and checklists just isn't entertaining. But some people insist if it's not 100% dead-on, then it's just wrong or trash.
    Sometimes realism is sacrificed for the sake of entertainment. That's why you see a movie-cop rack the slide before going into a shoot-out. It's why people rarely say good-bye in a movie phone call. And it's why you can see a fighter jet rocket vertically between two others with inches to spare. This is what people are talking about with "suspension of disbelief." Yes, it's fake. Yes, we know it's fake. And yes, we ignore that knowledge to be entertained.
    If you can't do that, then you're going to hate everything and be a miserable person.

      realism is what makes a movie good. If you think showing a cop racking his gun before getting into a shoot out is good you don't know what makes a good movie. It shows the film maker does not understand their subject matter. Not going to make excuses for bad writing. At the same time it’s bad ass that Tom actually put himself and the other actors in the fighter jet for hopefully better scenes with all the camera work they did, instead of doing it all with green screens. I appreciated your interpretation of the “Start 2” scene and the riser harness strap “controversy”. I had some thoughts about the actors walking on the ramp with t-shirts under their flight gear and thought they were probably in early training at the light prop plane stage. Gotta work up to full nomex in that heat, or you’ll have a bunch of unconscious talent.
    It also turns out that the “push-ups on the ramp” scene is because those 3 aircrew lost a bet. So all you “I never did one push-up on the ramp” folks, just go to the movie. Enjoy.

    As someone who has worked in motion picture visual effects, almost no frame of this movie will be untouched by VFX artists. But, that doesn't mean that they can't go to great lengths to put actors in realistic environments wherever possible. Just does so much to make the performances better, where it's possible. (Also, this movie's certain to have a heavy dose of digital face replacement, so don't trust anything you see on screen!)

    • @roshieifra
      @roshieifra Před rokem +1

      From what I've heard, the actors were in the backseat during the flight scenes. I'm not saying maybe there wasn't some face replacement, but I think a lot of the footage was them actually in the jets. I think one of Cruise's motivations to do this film was to get into these jets, lol. So I believe a lot of the footage is real. I mean, obviously no explosives were used, and jets weren't flying as close to each other as some of the scenes portrayed, but they did perform the maneuvers as if they were that close, and then editing and vfx would fill in the gaps. At least that's what I've gathered from all the interviews of the cast & crew, especially the navy flight coordinator (that's not his official job title on the film I don't think, but something like that). Anyway, just my thoughts on an old comment/reaction video. 🤷‍♀️

    • @azotic1
      @azotic1 Před rokem +2

      @@roshieifra Oh yeah, based on what they’ve said I’m sure that was the case!! They just didn’t cut that footage straight into the movie. It all would have gone through a VFX process to add or change what was out the window and sweeten the whole thing up visually. Also, it would be typical to add shots after principal photography in response to test audiences or creative needs that come out in editing, and those shots would possibly use face replacement or even a full CG pilot. As a rule, on a movie like this, no shot would be untouched.

I will take real actors sitting in the backseat of a real jet over CGI/Blue Screen/Volume any day. That shot of Tom Cruise taking off from the carrier....who cares it is the backseat, that is one of the most amazing shots of an actor in a jet in a movie, ever. And I'm really glad that pilots like you can really respect it too. Despite some of the obvious flaws of the movie that you and Gronky pointed out (and were 100% right on) I think we can all agree that like the first Top Gun, when it comes down to the cinematography this just set a bar way way high.

    Love the breakdown Mover. One point - you said that the mountain background wasn't real, which I believe is incorrect as, per the documents released by the gov't the film crew filmed flight sequences out of NAS Whidbey Island, in addition to MCAS Miramar and NAS Fallon; NAS Whidbey aviators fly through a MOA that goes through the Cascades, including North Cascades National Park. VR 1355, aka the "million dollar route" goes through terrain similar to the scene you mention, so they may have filmed those scenes while flying out of NAS Whidbey. Lots of videos of Growler pilots doing low levels on that route; in the winter, it looks pretty similar to the scene.

    I’ve only been inverted once and that was in my buddies Van RV7 doing an aileron roll. It’s an experience I’ll never forget and I have it on video that I show anyone willing to watch. Cherokee pilot from Pa here.

    The SuperBug stuff was sped up too.. The FCS limits roll rate to 200 degrees per second. "Smaller people, with smaller tiny frames" had me laughing out loud.. Very diplomatic, Mover.. :D

    Mover, Brazilian fan here! You did a vídeo on the gripen some time ago, but it would be most appreciated if you could coment in a video about the air capabilities of theJAS-39 Gripen NG, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the Rafale F3, because these were the aircrafts that the Brazilian Air Force FX-2 project was choosing to buy and we went with the Gripen mostly because of the transfer of tecnology and low cost flight campared to the other two. We already received 04 gripens out of 36 and the air force is to order 30 more!
