    Michael Bay said in the audio commentary that the AWACS scene was filmed with real guys in the aircraft. He explained the situation the ground forces would be in and told the crew to use the language/lines and do things just as if it was real life and not a movie.

    • @TheNetherwalker
      @TheNetherwalker Před 4 lety +206

      Well he should have had some guys on the ground also to explain that you wouldn't laser a target from 15' away and stand there while an A10 strafes the target. The spread on the forward cannon is way too high for that. Even if Annie Oakley was flying and shooting the entire ground team would be a red mist from standing that close.

    • @sig9237
      @sig9237 Před 4 lety +95

      @@TheNetherwalker He did. Some of the guys running across the dunes with the actors before that scene, was former Navy SEALs (IIRC).
      I'm sure that falls into the same reasoning as any movie with modern air combat where aircraft always fight much, much closer than in real life.
      For that scene, how would you set it up and film it like in real life, lasing from a fair distance away, of course with invisible (to the eyes) IR laser AND make it visual and exciting which would work for a movie? Use realistic distances and you in order to get everything in frame, you'll have pull so far out you cant see who is who.

    If I remember the film correctly, there is a line of dialogue in there somewhere where the main protagonists on the ground identify one of the jets as a hostile specifically because it's flying below the building line and Raptor pilots would never fly that low.

Now when the F22 pilots face Star Scream and Star Scream transforms into robot mode and jumps onto the F 22s, all hell breaks loose. One of the big things about these Transformers movies was that they did indeed make an arrangement with the Armed Service to integrate actual members into the film, the comms maybe spoofed for opsec but otherwise the film was treated as a glorified training exercise and marketing campaign. The second film, revenge of the fallen, all that air to ground was coordinated via either a JTAC or TACP along with one of the squadron pilots supervising.

    My dad was Tyrese's Combat Control technical advisor for the movie. Tyrese played a USAF Combat Controller in the movie and Michael Bay wanted him to be as authentic as possible in his CAS calls. My Dad wasn't deployed at the time and was raised next to Holloman AFB where they filmed the airbase raid scenes, so he was chosen to be the technical lead. Definitely some Hollywood sprinkled in with "Bring the Rain" but it was pretty awesome! I have great pictures of my Dad on set with Tyrese and Josh.

They were already renting the plane, so might as well rent the crew also. And on the F-22s flying below buildings, Eps literally says that in the movie after Starscream attacks them. "F22 pilots would never fly below building, that thing is alien, that ain't friendly!" But what I think is kinda weird is wouldn't the F-22 pilots think a single F-22 forming up with them out of nowhere is kinda odd?
