The fact that Alivia was so concerned about her weight made her contact Steve, but I think a psychologist would have help to solve the problem from the root. I don’t think a personal trainer was the solution, because Steve sees health from another perspective, he focuses on the physical image instead of an actual well-being and a healthy mindset.

Yes, I don't think anything of what Steve said was wrong or not delicate enough. He seemed pretty ok considering what his job is. A therapist would definitely have been more appropriate to begin with and to change approach to food an mindset, and then if still needed going to a trainer would be an option. But first what is needed is to learn to love herself more for what her and her body's needs are, accept them and start from there.

Let’s consider Steve’s position here: 1) he is a celebrity trainer. He trains celebrities mostly for superhero roles which makes his methods purely aesthetic (symmetry) on the account of nutritional and psychological insight which takes a toll on those he tains. 2) his career is based in Hollywood so he targets specific audience, he is providing a product for appearance, not longevity and health. He is clearly successful at what he’s doing but he may not be the best match for Alivia; she needed guidance and support on her relationship with food (which is commonly attributed to mental and psychological imbalance), he had a product for her appearance.

That's how my mom talks to me. I used to believe her for years, thankfully I knew shit was bad and I have to move out ASAP and chose a decent amount of distance between us so that we don't have to go through this conversation often. She still reminds me I look like "I've gained weight" and that "I'm fat" during every single video call though. Having a messed up family can really convince all sorts of untrue things where you're not even able to grasp what is realistic and what isn't. This is why I think talking with a psychology specialist could truly help her with her journey to accept herself as she is and that our family doesn't necessarily always say the kindest and healthiest things to us and we don't have to believe them.

Now I’m 32 and still struggle with food and body image and my parents now try to tell me I’m too thin. Who decided the more productive you are the better you are? Sometimes the most productive thing you can do for yourself is nothing! You can exercise without a "glow up". Seeing some of the rude comments regarding her content I have to say:
It’s very easy to be harsh and judge Alivia but have you guys thought that it’s a complicated issue?? I honestly believe that she is capable of getting healthier on the other side of this. She has a lot of stuff she is struggling with like: limiting beliefs, insecurities coming from her upbringing and from comments that her family is saying to her, from media, her own coping mechanisms to deal with all of it. She seems not to be aware of it - like most of us weren’t before someone pointed it out to us. Therefore she’s trying to help herself the best way she knows how and it’s obviously not healthy and it’s obviously not working but she is trying. It’s not like she means to do harm to anyone. She struggles with self-sabotage, self-hate yet she is still trying but she just doesn’t see yet that this mental stuff is what is holding her back. I personally think that therapy would help her more than dieting. And then dieting would also be good for her. I honestly think that constructive feedback is valid here but it also takes having empathy to fully understand what is going on with her. - to write an *actual* empathetic, constructive comment. Some of these are just rude, judgmental and hateful. And saying that she is responsible for someone else’s way of eating is pointing the finger in the wrong direction. Complete lack of accountability for our own lives. What she is going through does look like an ED to me. And that is helped through therapy + diet together. She is struggling with physical sugar withdrawals, insulin spikes and lows - these are things that only a diet can fix. So like I said it’s complicated. What she is doing is a documenting of Her own journey. Not telling people how to live their lives. And If we make choices based upon someone’s CZcams video then that is our business and our choices are our own responsibility. If you don’t like her content and you watch it then who is there to blame for it?
But at the same time I understand the concern that promoting this way of being as sth healthy is not a good influence. I get that.
All in all I think that we are all witnesses of how she takes her first steps on her recovery which is sometimes messy. And with time while taking the helpful feedback she will be able to take healthy steps to improve her life. let’s support each other instead of tearing down one another :)

I definitely think this would be a great video or even a great mini-series. My mom was always so encouraging of me to try new foods because she didn't want me to grow up picky like she did. I never had problems eating vegetables or fruit, or really anything. As I got older and went through high school and even into college, she became more critical of what I ate or if I looked like I had gained weight. Even recently, as I've moved away she still comments on how I eat or if I mention having had alcohol, assuming I've gone down this rabbit hole of not eating salads as much as I use to or that I'm drinking too much and just not eating as "healthy" as I used to, when her assumptions couldn't be farther from the truth. A bit of a ramble because this has been on my mind recently, but all that to say I do think this is a subject that could use some addressing because I know comments like this are coming out of a place of love, but as Abbey mentions in the video, the comments can have the opposite effect on children and teens, and from personal experience, they can clearly leave a mark even when the comments are made in adulthood.

This is so great! I’ve recently learned about the French method of & attitude toward nutrition. Unlike the US, French children are taught from a young age how to balance: their plates, meals throughout the day, taking a little bit of everything. They have a very holistic approach where they believe in indulgence in moderation & no restriction. They also teach kids nutrient values & there’s no such thing as “kid food” like chicken nuggets. Instead, they just eat smaller portions of nutrient rich “adult food.” This also prevents them from being picky too. It’s such a refreshing approach to eating & food, and has helped me to get rid of the extreme American diet culture that ignores balance & nutrients.

In my opinion, she isn’t in any place to understand the affect of her videos, because even though she reached her goal, she’s still living in the mess of her own mind.
People keep mentioning that she needs to go to therapy and I agree, because in her mind, she’s just showing you her journey and she thinks she’s on the other side of her disorder, but she’s not.
I have a lot of sympathy for her. She reminds me a lot of a long-time friend that I had that seemed to struggled a lot with this kind of disordered eating. If my friend had lost weight, she would’ve thought she was “better” too, because that’s all she could focus on. In her mind, she was worthless unless she was skinny. Alivia seems to be convincing herself that it’s not all about weight, but I would be willing to bet it all and say that in the depth of her mind (if she was completely honest with herself), it is. That’s the issue. Her mind still isn’t right. Her body got “better”, but her mind didn’t. Her mind figured out how to beat itself up enough to be “happy” with skinny habits, so that Alivia could convince herself that she too was happy.
I don’t know if that makes sense, but it’s how I feel. I really feel terrible for her. She does need help and I don’t think all this backlash is helping, because now she feels guilty about her journey, when her journey is so like so many others. She’s just in the middle of it, not the end, where she thinks she is.

The loudest voice in her head is telling her:

      2. Any amount of pain and discomfort is worth it, for the glow up
The loudest voice *not* inside her head, aka her family, are basically telling her the same thing.
Look at how her dad shamed her for wanting a microwave mug cake.
Therapy is the only way she is going to climb out of this morass of self-hatred.
And even then, it's going to be uphill.

@@AbbeysKitchen agree with this sentiment, Abbey. So perhaps you should have chosen a different title for this video. It reads as if you are calling Alivia problematic instead of the misinformed advice she is getting. The clickbait-y title kind of undermines your empathizing with her imo

@@aab24209 it actually reads “Dietician Reviews Alivia D’Andrea’s Glow Up Diaries & Problematic Weight Loss Plan (OMG, NO!!)” which puts Alivia as the subject noun of this title and makes it sound exactly like the problematic weight loss plan belongs to her. And the (OMG, NO!!) and THIS IS NOT OKAY in the thumbnail is seriously clickbait. Abbey usually has good things to say so my point is that phrasing her title like this is unnecessary and again, undermines the empathy abbey is otherwise trying to convey in the rest of the video.

I watched Steve train a different CZcamsr without a history of disordered eating and it was a success, so I can see how Steve's approach can suit some people, but Abbey rightly calls out that this method is not ideal or adjusted for someone like Alivia. Great video btw

Yes I think he is flawed because he should know better when it comes to training someone with an ED. But for someone like me who doesn't and never has had an ED I personally didn't see or feel any triggers for myself from what he said. I think these trainers need to be more vigilant when it comes to their client's needs.

Her "tough mindset" is really toxic. I was watching her livestream where she said that she was scared of uploading her video because she was being extremely vulnerable. She was almost on the verge of tears and telling herself "I'm a tough person" by doing this she's literally invalidating her emotions.
Edit: also I think that she's linking her happiness to how she looks and her good habits. Incase if she happens to have a cupcake or fall back on her habits she would feel terrible because her happiness is coming from her habits, not from her self.
