Uneducated people shouldn’t try to fix someone’s eating disorder. Even if it’s from a place of meaning well, it is so dangerous. People within the medical field educate themselves for years, and even they sometimes need to go in and educate themselves some more so it’s so risky to try to wing it without a proper education when it comes to eating disorders. People really need to stop entertaining the idea that eating disorders is mainly an issue with food! Issues with food is the symptom of a serious mental disorder, you can’t help someone by saying they are beautiful or encourage them to eat. And those who say others help them get better by showing what they eat, is also uneducated because it still doesn’t help them refulate their emotions or fix their traumas that made them develop the mental disorder in the first place! Disordered eating on the other hand is what these people are experiences which is tied to physical appearance and social status etc, but it’s the thing people can overcome without the medical care because it is NOT a mental disorder it’s issues with food due to aesthetics!

No wonder Bella developed an eating disorder (she had a whole Tumblr account dedicated to her eating disorder, you can google it). Her mother literally set disordered eating and skewed body goals as an example and imposed it on her kids. On top of that Bella also had to deal with Gigi being favoured as the golden child by her mom.
It's also no wonder that Yolanda clearly struggles with food and body image having been a model in the 90s/2000s era. Still not an excuse to treat her children this way.

You all say that, but her strict dieting has enabled she and her daughters to be global supermodels. You don’t get that by eating “normally” just as pro body builders don’t eat “normally” prepping for a competition. When your physique secures your employment you treat is differently not saying it’s healthy, but their perspective is different.

My in-laws found it so weird that I told them they’re not allowed to talk about how ‘fat’ they are or about their diets and losing weight in front of my daughter. One told me with a straight face ‘its the reality of being a woman?’. So I told them I don’t want a life for my daughter where she’s never satisfied with her body and perpetually on a diet, living from one ‘cheat meal’ to the next. They completely disregarded this and it went as far as me telling them if they keep talking to her about it I will not allow them to see her without me present. I struggled for so long to have a healthy relationship with food and love my body, and I don’t want that for her.

True, but if you treat modeling as a professional sport you would understand that there are specific requirements on how you're supposed to look (or perform). To think that professional sport is "healthy" is naive, it requires a lot of sacrifices and is frequently very bad for your body, leaving sportsman and sportswomen with lifelong conditions. Now modeling is clearly much more shallow and much less honorable, but both require sacrifices, that's my point. Also, both Gigi and Bella did very good modeling wise and are now set for life, so I guess Yolanda succeeded? Is money everything? I don't think so, but they apparently do, it's their right.

Agreed. There is also the "Neue Deutsche Medizin" (translates to New German Medicine) which kind of correlates all kind of emotional issues to physiological problems in the body.. Like when you have acid reflux would be that you cannot digest what is troubling you or worrying you.. or when you have joint issues that you are too rigid in some of your ways and not "bending" and flexible or all type of pains related to emtional and psychological reasons.. Found it very interesting. Also I believe it´s important to be grateful to the food that we eat. Say a small thank you or a grace before you eat. This small thing can really make the foods you eat more nourishing. I do not have any scientific studies to proof this but I know in my heart that it´s right.

Also when I was going through puberty at 12 she said that my thighs are too big. I was 12!!! There was so many other comments as well and they all definitely contributed to me developing an ED. I feel like the way in which Yolanda speaks about food is in part driven by her life long battle with Lyme. It’s true. When you have a chronic illness or autoimmune disease the dietary rules are so restrictive and every time you get a flareup you have doctors asking you to track every ounce of food. It’s horrible. I was doing well battling an ED from childhood but with my illness, my doctors are demanding I return to those disordered habits. Food isn’t just bad or a cheat anymore, it’s “killing” me. I’d actually love to see Abbey address this. It’s a struggle. You can’t have “variety” because you aren’t allowed to eat anything. You get tired. You end up just not eating because all food feels like the enemy.

Chronic Lyme is not a thing, despite what holistic people say. That's why you pay big money to functional medicine docs for their tests for their diagnosis and then their treatment. Oftentimes it is an undiagnosed autoimmune disorder or some sort of variant of chronic fatigue syndrome/depression with physical symptoms. But yes the diets of holistic people are insane and are terrible for their mental health, they truly become obsessive.

The “you are what you eat” mantra is actually extremely harmful to people with chronic illnesses. Nowadays many people assume that you only get any kind of disease or condition if you’re not eating “healthy” enough or don’t work out enough. And it’s so frustrating to battle a chronic illness and then have to hear bs like that.

Not to mention that there are doctors who, because of this attitude, overlook the possibility of chronic illness in patients, instead referring to their problems as side effects of obesity or poor diet. DOCTORS!!!!! So many people go undiagnosed because this rhetoric is so pervasive that DOCTORS are pushing it. The craziest part is that saying a change in diet is a solution to chronic illness is pretty much on par with saying that garlic is a safer prevention of disease than a vaccine - it's completely illogical, but when enough people say it, it becomes believable.

Unfortunately we live in the obesity/overconsumption world, not a "diet world". An average person consumes at least 500 calories more than they should daily, especially in UK and North Americans. While dieting and anorexia can be dangerous, they only take up to 1000 lives annually, while obesity affects hundreds of millions and causes around 5-6 million of deaths each year. But forget about the quantity, the quality of the food is even a bigger issue. Just looking at what Americans feed their kids (and most North Americans actually) is saddening. Jamie Oliver has raised this topic a lot (and please note that neither he nor his kids are anorexic), but it didn't have much effect in USA.

I'm not defending Yolanda for probably giving her daughter an eating disorder. However, let's also remember that she was a model as well, and this way of thinking that she is passing on to her children is all likely an result of her own experiences with restriction in the modeling industry and someone controlling her diet/giving her bad advice as well.
Edit: Also another point to add. Just because your parents might do everything to raise you to be intuitive, healthy eaters with a great food relationship doesn't mean it'll happen. But that's the scary part about raising kids in general isn't it? My mom followed all of the gentle nutrition tips and teaching us how to be good eaters, and out of the four of us (2 boys and 2 girls), I'm the only one that struggles with disordered eating. My younger sister almost did, but she wised up pretty fast. To say I'm envious is an understatement.

So the said apple will be used in on way or another to either fuel your cell as a source of energy or as a “building block” to literally build a cell. Therefore I think we are indeed what we eat and I really like that I am pizzas and apples and chocolate and so on. Oh, wow, she sounds like my mother when I was growing up. Not even modelling for an excuse. She was always trying to lose 5, 10, 15 pounds, and as soon as I started developing she was all over what I ate, and criticizing every part of my body. Yes, I have a history of eating disorders. Umpteen years of therapy later, I am doing OK and able to talk with my daughter about food in terms of fuel, building blocks and fun. I ask her to check in with herself about eating more/not eating and if she's eating a bunch of pickled gherkins and not filling up, I suggest rounding out the pickles with something that has protein and fat (because pickles have fibre) to help her fill up and stay full long enough.
And then the other day she asked why I was so fat, and yikes! I explained that yes, I am fat, and there's a lot of different reasons, some hormonal, some my tummy issues, some because I'd had more than one time in my life where I didn't get enough food, so now my body likes to hold on to some extra energy because it doesn't understand that I am going to have enough food from now on, and some because I get sick and tired so much that I don't get the chance to move my body as much as it wants to move--but my body is the way it is, and I like it and everything it *does* let me do. I hope I did OK, but if my mother has been in her ear, that is it, because the eating disorders and disordered eating and body image issues stop with me, I am not subjecting another generation to the same misery I went through.

Thank you for talking about the mora judgement that underpins the “you are what you eat” mentality. I was taught that as a kid and really struggle now with the good food=good person vs. bad food=bad person thinking. Instead of encouraging better habits it has created a lot of inner conflict that makes it hard to see food simply for what it is, and not a reflection on my entire character. This video was a lightbulb moment for me because I’ve experienced but never heard anyone really articulate the damaging effects that this seemingly simple phrase can have.

Abbey, I just love your videos. I’m learning a lot. I love how you understand the true mommy diet. I had a weird situation when I had my son. I was overweight, no energy and miserable. I went to a nutritionist who asked me what I ate in a day and I couldn’t really tell her. All she asked me to do keep a good journal for a week. I was eating 800-900 calories a day. When I started to eat more calories I started to lose weight and get a lot better. I still struggle with it though. I know I feel horrible when I don’t get enough calories.

Omg this video hit me. 😳
It explains so much why I have such a dysfunctional relationship with food. I could understand that it comes from a 'Good' place. But I am not competent. The constant guilt, surveillance and nonstop thinking about my meals and when, how and what I will be eating. It all stems from my mother, her dysfunctional relationship with food and mental health. Which subsequently came from her mum. I'm so much more than food or my weight.
Thank you so much for you're content xx

I have insulin sensitivity and through trial and error, I’ve learned that I feel best eating the bulk of my calories early in the day and fasting (unintentionally) at night, makes me feel the best without severe dips in blood sugar.
