@@badrobot3159 Barcelona was written & recorded in 1987, specifically for the 1992 Olympics. Oct.1986, Barcelona was selected to host the 92 games. Early 87, Montserrat, a Barcelona native, was asked to do a song for those games. She & Freddie decided to collaborate on it (she then suggested they do a whole album). Due to the deadline to submit songs for consideration, Barcelona was done 1st (released as a single Oct. 87). The album was finished later (released Oct. 88). When the Committee chose Barcelona as the official song, Freddie then told Montserrat he was ill & wouldn’t be alive to perform it at the 92 games. Freddie & Montserrat did perform it 3 times. If you watch their Oct. 88 performance at La Nit, in Barcelona, it was staged for an Olympic event (the arrival of the Olympic flag from Seoul), with the Olympic symbol & “Barcelona 92” projected behind them.

Yes, also Impromptu, arguably the best example available is from Wembley 1986.
      @BroAction,
You asked about other collaborations . . . Freddie and Montsy can't really be topped, but there are some other very topnotch/cool/interesting/unlikely collaborations by dissimilar artists, for anyone who might be interested in looking into them - this is only a shortlist -
Country music legend Loretta Lynn with rocker Jack White of The White Stripes, "Portland, Oregon". Fantastic.
Led Zep's Robert Plant with bluegrass angel Alison Krauss, albums "Raising Sand" and "Raise the Roof". "Gone Gone Gone" is a good single to start out with. "Raising Sand" took all five Grammys in the album categories it was nominated for.
Tony Bennett, song-stylist legend, with Lady GaGa, albums "Cheek to Cheek" and "Love for Sale", both are superb.
Total rock legend Tina Turner, no description needed for her, "Cose Della Vita", with Eros Ramazzotti, Italian pop singer, late '90s pop fabulousness. A lightweight tissue-thin song in itself, it's just regular pop, however great sound and a charismatic pairing. I wouldn't put this one in The Realm of Greatness but, you can't go wrong with Ms. Turner. She was not unlike Freddie Mercury in showmanship and her ability to elevate anything she was doing.
"Unchained", the album from Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Flea, and Fleetwood Mac. The whole album is great but a fine single to start with from this is "The Running Kind".
Also Cash, from 1969, with Bob Dylan: "Girl From the North Country". Wonderful.

Freddie said in an interview on Spanish TV that he loved Montserrat, as a fan.
Montsy heard this, but had not really heard of Freddie so checked out some Queen and she herself quickly became a fan of Freddie (well, duh!) and, I believe, she had her people call his people....
In a restaurant in Spain, a (Spanish) waiter looks up and see the legend that is Montserrat Caballé, and gets a shock... He looks across, sees the legend that is Freddie Mercury and... Faints.
Montserrat thought she was just going to do a single song as a simple collaboration with another gifted musician... what actually happened was that she fell in love with Freddie (not in that way...) and she suggested an album!
A lifelong friendship was born and an absolutely beautiful album came of it.
You guys need to check out (not only other Barcelona album tracks) a track called Exercises In Free Love which is Freddie doing an 'impression' of Montserrat!
The track became a song on the album with Montsy writing lyrics and taking her role while giving Freddie a baritone.

It is an amazing story, Freddy once saw Montserrat in an Opera and was totally captivated by her voice, he wanted to work with her but was afraid the best female opera singer in the world would consider him as not a serious singer as he sang Rock music, when he finally got the courage to approach her, she was concerned what the best rock singer in the world would want with an 'old fat opera singer' to paraphrase her words, in the end he convinced her he was indeed interested in working with her and they produced a magical album together, it is well worth checking out other songs from the album.

Freddie was in admiration of Montserrat, he’d always say “she is music”. Phoebe said that each time they were due to meet, Freddie was nervous as if it was the first time they met. It shows the great amount of respect he had.Peter Freestone: "He was on cloud nine. Freddie was up in the sky. He didn't need a plane to go home on, he was so happy. From what I know of Freddie, one of the biggest, greatest moments in his life, was when Montserrat had come over to London and put down her vocal track for Barcelona. After they'd done it, on the way home from the studio, I remember Freddie turning to me and saying "That's it! I've done it! I've got HER voice on my music!"

I recommend you to listen a couple of other pieces from the album named Barcelona.
For example - How I can get on. or The Golden Boy.
Also you did not pay attention that the orchestra conductor of the performance was Brian May)))

first opera cross over so pleased they had the chance to do this
between deciding to record and actually recording this he found out he had AIDS
she was upset when she saw him again that he wouldn't let her kiss him or share his drink
so he told her he had AIDS
at the time people were scared they could get AIDS by holding hands, kissing
so it doesn't seem anything important here that they hold hands and he kisses her hand but it was a big deal
her support must have meant a great deal to him
the first time she went to his house after covent Garden before recording they spend all nigh singing everything and anything and she said I looked at him and knew he had conquered me
she has had a fantastic career but enjoyed singing with him saying he taught her to really enjoy the music like she hadn't done before
they had areal love and respect for each other
she wanted this song to be for the olympics and it had been accepted
    to perform it with him
and he had to tell her bluntly he wouldnt be here
she knew but didn't really accept it
it must have been very difficult for him to have to say this to her
    they did an album
with mike Moran who he met when he recorded Time and in my defence for Dave Clarke

Having said that.... This song ...I always find myself just in complete and total awe of her voice....And maybe he was too? it's such a beautiful song and just wow ya know!

Freddie said outside of Queen, he cherished (or some such term) his collaboration with Montserrat more than anything he did. Her singing with him was his dream come true. They both loved working and doing this music. She is interviewed saying it was her best, most enjoyable year (or some such words.). Thanks for the reaction. I cherish your words/sentiments.

Great reaction guys! ;) It's amazing song, it was official song for Summet Olympics in Barcelona 1992. Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé recorded more songs together, for full album "Barcelona" which was release in 1988. Can you react song "Ensueño" from this album? It's only one song where Freddie sang with his natural voice, baritone, in other songs in his career he always sang higher than his natural voice, as tenor voice. Freddie had two songs with the same melodic line, "Ensueño" and "Exercises In Free Love", that second song was first and it's without lyrics, only vocal improvisation and really high notes, "Ensueño" is great contrast, because Freddie in this song sang very low. I recommend for you guys these two songs as great example of Freddie's vocal skills. ;)
Can I recommend one japanese rock/metal band? It's my favourite band, they called The Gazette. If you can, please react their song "Dim Scene" live version from 2014 with english subs, because lyrics in their music are very important. This is one of my favourite songs by them and this performance is amazing. Or please react song "Baretta" also live version from 2014 with english lyrics, originally title is in japanese, but if you type it in latin alphabet "the gazette baretta live eng" on CZcams as first on list will be this with title in japanese, but this is it. Please, I love this band so much and I really want to share it with you and see your reaction. :)

Pure perfection ... There are no words to describe this. I'm so glad you put this on. Pure madness from the emotions that this song creates in a man. Thanks guys. And now a little about the song. Barcelona" is a single released by Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury and operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé. A part of their collaborative album Barcelona, it also appeared on Queen's Greatest Hits III. The song reflects Mercury's love of opera with his high notes and Caballé's operatic vocals, backed by a full orchestra. Originally released in 1987, it was one of the biggest hits of Mercury's solo career, reaching number eight in the UK Singles Chart. After Mercury's death in 1991, it was featured at the 1992 Summer Olympics, after which the track climbed even higher, peaking at number two in the UK, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
