    You said there was no trigger “pull”, with this gun. That’s actually one of things that I like about it. Very little travel, distinct wall, and crisp break. No “mush”. Also, the reset is very short. All pluses, in my book…

    Long time handgun reloader here. Almost 40 years.
    The primer flow is a non-issue as far as reloading goes. The hole in the slide for the firing pin is larger than it needs to be and you get a little flow. As long as you stay within spec you'll be fine. If I saw that on a magnum revolver with lighter loads I would have a problem; but not in 9x19.
    The smile is less pronounced than a 40 Glock, or even an early 9mm Glock. Not a problem as long as you don't use the case for multiple really hot handloads. Again, almost no one reloads hot 9mm unless they are "making major" in a match gun, which certainly doesn't apply here. I haven't seen a case fail from smiley until the fourth or so hot load. You can see it progressing, so just watch your brass.
    The smoke ring is usually low pressure loads. An oversized chamber will do it too, which is common in defensive guns.
    The failure to return to battery is likely just debris of some sort; dirty gun, what have you. The one round that never chambered is obviously out of spec and doesn't reflect on the gun.
    Hopefully the new barrel fixes what ails this. And try the Arex Delta Gen 2; in this climate you can always sell a gun for list price.

      @@11spitdms They can't import one do to the point system for handguns. But since the gun is modular they can sell micro grip modules and smaller slide assemblies. Look for them to do that when/if they get enough "base" models sold that they think they can turn a good number of conversions kits.

    Just picked up a GX4 after watching multiple reviews including yours. Took it to the range today for the first time after the initial field strip and lube and put 160 rounds on steel, including Federal AE 115gr FMJ, Remington UMC 124gr FMJ, Winchester WB 147gr Flat Nose and Fiocchi 115gr JHP. NO failures of any kind. The trigger was very good, perhaps a little grittiness in the initial take up, but after reaching the wall it broke crisply at my guess of about 5 lbs with minimal over travel. Reset was very short and tactile. The slide release was easy to manipulate during reloads unlike a lot of micros that are very stiff. POA/POI were right on once I figured out the sights seem to be regulated for a "combat" hold. I am by no means a marksman and despite my shaky old man hands I had no trouble hitting a 8" plate at 15 yards.
    After your discussion in the video about the primer blowout and "smiley face" marks on the brass, I checked several of my spent cases and they showed the same although the smileys were less visible than the one's you had. To the naked eye I didn't seen any bulging on any of the cases.
    All in all I am very impressed with the GX4. For me personally I find it fits me better, is easier to shoot well, and recoils less than my Kimber Micro 9 and carries 4 more rounds. I have ordered two of the pinky extensions from Taurus to get the full 3 finger grip (I only get 2 1/2 with the 11 round mag with the flat base plate) and am considering replacing the front sight with a fiber optic or painting it green or orange to make it easier to see.
    I had my choice narrowed down to the GX4 and the CZ P-10S. The CZ is a fine pistol in every respect and it was a toss up between the two but I went with the GX4 due its' slightly easier to conceal footprint. Maybe for Fathers Day I'll get myself the CZ!!

  • @davevabch

    Long time shooting enthusiasts especially love shooting Pocket guns and Micro 9mms. Never owned a Taurus. However, after testing this gun with others at my club, I was a instant fanboy. Man I love this gun. IMO the very best Micro 9mm money can buy. I was shocked at the quality and shooting control. My new one now has over 700 rds of every thing I could find to put into it and not one single issue. NONE. Just recently bought the Toro Slide to go with it for only $149.00.
    Taurus obviously went into the competitive market to come out on TOP and that they did. They took the best of all the Micro's and put into this gun. Love the Trigger for EDC. What a unique design. I would not be surprised to see others try and copy it. I was not looking for a Budget gun and I did not get one, What I did get was a top quality gun at a budget price. I would have paid much more if that had been the cost.

    You mentioned an extremely important thing that nobody else talks about. Ballistics. 9mm from a 4” barrel is one thing. Once you go to 3.5” (G26)things change and 147gr HP’s don’t always reliably expand, in my experience. I carry a 43x, 3.4” barrel, and that’s right on the line. 3.0”-3.1” are going to be a crap shoot. I wish people would do gel tests with the micros. I’m sure a 115gr-124gr +p would open up but probably not through all test mediums. Thank you for bringing this up.

    • @GBGuns
      @GBGuns  Před 3 lety +5

      It's a serious point. There are some great modern specialty loads designed to perform well at the lower speeds these shorties create, but they still don't deliver the energy that a longer barrel does. I personally don't carry less than a 4". I want my HPs to open and I want as much energy dumped into the target as possible.

    Thanks Graham.
    I'm glad things turned out well, and there were no injuries. I know that some of the companies reduce chamber support to increase reliability. But if you do like Sign with the P365XL and split the difference between the feed ramp and the ejection side, you won't get the smile. The G3 is so well supported, that a wide mouthed HP bullet (also Lehigh XD, XP) will NOT chamber from a full mag for me.
    I definitely would not reload any casings from a gun that does not have a truly supported chamber. Primer hole is too big on that gun, Graham, that's why the primer is flowing back.

    I tried it with both back-straps, and preferred the smaller one. The larger one was a tad too large and the smaller one a tad too small. I used 124 gr ammo. IF Hogue comes out with a new grip that will stretch over the smaller backstrap, I bet it'll be the best of the three worlds.

    I have a pt111G2, a G3 and. G3X. As a big guy my favorite is the G3X for the 15+1 capacity and decent trigger. I’m thinking of going with the GX4 Carry as all the tests I’ve seen seem to point to the GX4 strengths and adding the 15 round capacity and accessory rail as on the G2 and 3. All the testers comment on the less barrel flip than comparable models and as you watch the videos it seems that it recoils straight back which may be due to the barrel being closer to the grip. Great review. It helps seeing a women give her take as often men don’t have the same likes and dislikes.

    I just bought the GX4 and took it out to the range for the first time yesterday and shot it side by side with my Sig P365. I actually found that the Taurus fits my (medium) size hands better than the Sig, and with the Sig using my normal grip my support hand thumb always seems to be resting on the take down lever. You guys made this video a year ago and I'm wondering if Taurus has since made some adjustments to the trigger. My personal experience in my 200 round range session yesterday was absolutely outstanding, and I was able to shoot the GX4 more accurately than my P365 and lower recoil impulse. I did also notice the slightly bulged primers and the burn marks on one side of the spent shell casing, but I see the burn marks on several of my Glock casings too. I didn't have any issues of the pistol going into battery but wasn't shooting the same ammo as you guys. Great informative video guys! Nicely done and nice shooting!

    If you look at the firing pin hole on the breach face you will notice an oblong chamfer with the largest part pointed down. This 'primer flow' look is caused by the shape of it. I'm not a fan of the unsupported chamber. I don't think these things will be a problem but only time will tell now that the pistol has been released.

    Ok, now I've bought a new Taurus GX4 Micro Carry. My primers look just like yours, being my reloads or factory loaded ammo. If you look at the firing pin hole, you'll notice that it isn't round, but has some relief cut below the hole itself. Taurus says it's to help with any debris that may get in that area to fall out. It seems that they all have that relief cut in them, so your primers are actually normal, for a Taurus anyway. It also makes it look like you are getting light primer strikes, (Which I have had a few of), when you're not, because it also allows the dent in the primer to blow back out somewhat. I learned that my light strikes were due to primers not seated deep enough into the primer pocket. When you're loading range brass you are loading many different brands and makers of brass, and they are not all the same. In some cases, the primer actually seats below level with the head of the case. If that is done, it will fire them every time. You want to use a small primer ram to reload for this pistol so it can push the primers all the way to the seated position and if you do that it will be one hundred percent reliable. As far as your (Smiles), I've not noticed that, even with very hot loads. What I've found with my used G2C and the new GX4 is they are one hundred percent reliable.

    Today @ about 1600 rounds my firing pin broke in the GX4. I noticed the firing pin drag on the struck primers when I fired my first shots and knew that was common on micro-compacts as firing pins were breaking but it wasn't a huge concern. Firing pins are cheap right? I have broken them in Glocks. This is the first Taurus I have owned in 33 years and only revolvers. Now, getting off the phone with Taurus and finding out they won't sell me a firing pin, I have to send them the gun, and it cost a lot to ship it that's not covered by the warranty, and it will take 4 to 8 weeks. Just to take two minutes to remove the back plate and change the firing pin assembly. It makes me realize I wasted my money buying a Taurus. I'm sticking with Glocks and Sigs. I can buy spare parts for those.

    Regarding the round(s) that did not allow the gun to fully go into battery; do you guys use your barrel to check round fitment _before_ you shoot? I ALWAYS do. Of the brands of gun I have, I've found my Taurus's to be the most sensitive to bullet seating height; if remove the bbl press the round in with my thumb, then turn the bbl upside down -- that round should readily fall out, or the bullet is not seated properly, IMHO. Regardless of what ammo I use, for defensive purposes, I would _ALWAYS_ use the above test!

  • @garyhysell8603
    @garyhysell8603 Před rokem

    I've reloaded 10's of thousands of rounds of 9mm. As long as you resize the cases there should be no issues. The leaking gas around the case will effect your velocity and even aim as the bullet may drop more as a result of lose of pressure around the casing, however this is very common with many small cal. auto guns. The primer flow is due to poor fit between the firing pin and hole bolt or slider and should be corrected in future by manufacture. No need for concern as long as there is no hole in primer after firing it. If you find a hole in primer be sure to have it repaired ASAP.

    Often imitated, but never duplicated... you know what they say, imitation is the biggest form of flattery. You've had me thinking since the table top review, and pointing out two things... the chamber being too shallow vs. unsupported, and the GX3 engraved on the barrel. I am of the opinion that barrel is weirdly liken to a .380ACP barrel, and now with the hard primer strikes... leads me to believe the back of the cartridge is too close to the breech face because the of the shallow chamber. Is it possible... in some odd way you've got a GX4, with a GX3 barrel that should've gone into a future production of a .380ACP micro pistol? Thanks for the usual 'What's For Dinner'™ tests...
