      @jamief1263 Před 4 lety +29

      I knew he had done his neck in, but the mad man didn’t have any time off. Bret was a bigger draw at the time than Shawn, but not much. The industry was in a bad place due to Hogan making the business stale, scandals and economics. So people like Shawn and Bret, despite being far superior in terms of in ring performers, didn’t get the recognition they deserved. Vince didn’t want to pay Bret the contract that he signed him into, but he also didn’t want him to go elsewhere, so he tried to destroy his character before kicking him out the door. The opposite actually happened, but WCW being WCW missed the opportunity with Bret, who after the screwjob, was the hottest wrestler on the planet. I feel that they could have built a brand to go against WWF. WWF had Austin at the head and WCW should have had Bret. WCW could then have said, your champ is great, but your champ never beat our champ, our champ is therefore better, therefore our brand is better. If your look at the potential match ups in WCW, you had Eddie, Mysterio, Benoit, Steiner, Booker, Jericho, Malenko etc, these matches would have been superior to the Attitude era match ups for in ring quality.

      Because that was all part of the work between Vince and Bret....it amazes me how people will accept obvious nonsense in order to make a story with gaping holes be true.
      Vince wanted to clear Bret's money (we all act like Bret had no access to legal counsel in order to say "Fuck you, give me my money") so he had to do whatever Bret wanted (we also ignore the "reasonable" creative control in Bret's contract, so he could have sued for it's breach...but for some reason didn't) Bret loved being a babyface, a martyr, a victim AND had the added benefit of in his mind, making HBK a pariah with the locker room, which he'd been trying to do for 2 years and THAT is why Bret had to lose to HBK...

People got invincere saying we can't lose Brett so Vince made bread some huge crazy offer like a 20-year deal and a few weeks later realized that it was a mistake and cancel the contract that part is also in the documentary where Brett receives a call from Vince at home and tells his wife that Vince backed out of the contract and wanted to talk to him about a smaller offer at the same time WCW was still offering a huge deal. He built him up as Champ, had him main event WM9....then had him lose to Yoko, and had Hogan come out and beat the monster Yoko in like 3 seconds. Dumbest ending to a WM ever (outside of WM8). Hart should have survived his match against the unbeatable monster Yokozuna, THAT'S how you tell people "THIS is the new guy". Then have Yoko beat him at Summerslam (which he did over Hogan anyway. Then have Bret get his belt back in the rematch at WM10. Easy peasy.
      Vince also wanted Luger to be the next Hogan, OVER Bret, but that didn't pan out, so he went back to Bret. Vince then favored Diesel over Bret...even though the dude held the belt for a nonsensical year, and the ratings were in the gutter during that time. That entire time should have been The Bret Hart Show, when he was at his peak. Then he had Hart drop the belt to HBK at WM12, and surprise surprise, the egotistical male stripper character didn't boost ratings as champ in 96.
      Hart easily could have had Vince's company doing better business in the mid 90s, but he KEPT trying to find other people to be "His Guy", instead of the guy he should have stuck with in the first place.

      Triple threat matches are dumb AF. You should never win a belt by getting a fall on anyone but the champion. It would suck slightly less if it went like this. If the first fall is against the champion, the wrestler to score the fall wins. If the first fall is against a challenger, they are eliminated and the match continues with the champion facing the remaining challenger.

    As an out-front Undertaker mark I would've loved to have seen the title go back to him in late '97. But, it wouldn't have been good business for WWF to deviate away from the big rematch between Shawn and Bret. Kind of like Hogan/Flair in 1991/92. They were on a collision course for WM8 and the match was even booked and advertised as the main event at one time, then they scrapped it. Granted, Macho had a better match with Flair than Hogan would've, but fans were majorly disappointed and that situation is still talked about to this day. Obviously Bret/Shawn wasn't nearly as big, but it was the money main event they were building to. Undertaker would've been booed if he beat Bret for the belt in Montreal and they would've lost heat on the Kane storyline, as in how does Taker win that match by pinfall without Kane getting the best of him.

      That makes Shawn Michaels look weak, being the champion for so short a time. Plus, it takes away at least 2 months of build up between HBK and Austin. You don't fuck with the ALREADY BOOKED plans involving Wrestlemania (including the build up) just because Bret is a little bitch and a bigger mark for his own character (and that is what it was...a fictional character) than any of the kids he handed his ugly ass sunglasses to.
      Look at it this way..if HBK was not champion until the end of the Royal Rumble, then Mike Tyson likely never happens. And THAT is what turned things around in the Monday Night Wars ratings-wise. It was Tyson that led to the WCW winning streak ending.

    The reason they could not drop the belt to Taker is simply because they waited too long. Vince understandably thought he could solve it down until it got to Brett's last match. By that time something had to happen in that ring that night against the two guys who'd been advertised for that match. If they would've decided to do that earlier I'm sure it would have been just fine with Shawn as long as the belt had a quick turn around. But the real question is... if they put the belt on Taker and then immediately pull it off him on the next Raw or whatever, how does this effect the perception of Taker and his career? Now that is an interesting question because the fans could see Jim as vulnerable or even weak losing that quickly.

    Confirms my view all along. Bret was willing to do business. Anyone who says that Bret said no to everything is just defending Vince’ decision. You can’t blame Bret for not wanting to drop the title to Shawn Michaels. Shawn said he wouldn’t put Bret over and that’s after Bret did the honours at Wrestlemania 12 in the iron man match. Bret lost clean in the middle of the ring. Shawn fakes an injury with the ‘losing my smile’ segment because he didn’t want to lose to Bret at WM13. Anyone with any self respect and dignity would demand that the other person put them over first. I was also disappointed with Vince not trying to keep Bret in the WWE. Just before he signed for WCW, Bret asked Vince to convince him to stay. Vince however said if Bret stayed, he would be doing Jobs for Shawn all year which is ridiculous and so Bret left. Vince went with Shawn because of age, but look what happened after that. Shawn ended up retiring in 1998 until 2002. That would have meant that Bret could have stayed in the WWE, never had to wrestle that idiot Goldberg hurt everyone he worked with. We also would have had Bret for all of the attitude era and eventually the dream match with Kurt Angle. Bret Austin was brilliant and Bret could also have worked with The Rock.

    I was delighted to hear Taker say this, as it had always been my hypothetical work around to the problem. Vince didn't want to hotshot Austin's win (it had to happen at 'Mania in his mind) so he couldn't replace Shawn with Austin -- though Bret vs Austin at WM14 would have been a better main event given their history. However, that wasn't possible. I understand that Vince wanted Shawn to beat Bret clean so Austin's victory would look more decisive when he eventually beat Shawn, but HBK opened his big mouth and ruined that so...
    Dropping the belt to Taker was the obvious solution. Bret has boatloads of respect for him, so he wouldn't complain at all, and since Taker was already in a programme with Kane, it'd be easy to get the belt off him at the Rumble. You barely have to change anything: Taker beats Bret, and then at the Rumble, Shawn goes over Taker. You can have Kane do a run-in and seal Taker in the casket and burn him as before. Afterwards, everything is the same: Austin faces Shawn and Taker faces Kane. Voila.

    Vince just didn't trust Bret. It really is his fault. He promised Bret creative control and Bret had never let Vince down before. Bret said he would drop it to anyone the next night on Raw (even Michael's), he just didn't want to drop it to Michaels at Survivor Series. It was always going to be the match though. Michaels had beaten Taker at Badd Blood to become the number one contender for Survivor Series. Taker wasn't even in the world title picture due to Kane. Austin had a broken neck and was fighting Owen in his return/revenge Intercontinental title match. They should have had the DQ finish at Survivor Series, then a rematch the next night where Kane goes after Shawn but takes out Bret on accident like HBK took out Taker at Summerslam. That way Bret loses the title the way he won it. That would have been a shocking yet believable ending due to the sheer power and fear Kane had as a character at that point. Bret could have said "I quit" after being screwed again and then gone to WCW as a man looking for justice and respect.
