Paris syndrome is a sense of extreme disappointment exhibited by some individuals when visiting Paris, who feel that the city was not what they had expected. The condition is commonly viewed as a severe form of culture shock.
The syndrome is characterized by a number of psychiatric symptoms such as acute delusional states, hallucinations, feelings of persecution (perceptions of being a victim of prejudice, aggression, hostility from others), derealization, depersonalization, anxiety, as well as psychosomatic manifestations such as dizziness, tachycardia, sweating most notably, but also others, such as vomiting.
While the syndrome has been particularly noted among Japanese tourists, it has also affected other travelers or temporary residents from East and Southeast Asia, such as those from China, South Korea, and Singapore.

@@cdrw92 Tokyo syndrome is NOWHERE near the level of Paris syndrome. Mostly because Tokyo is clean and well kept. It is hard to find your way though if you don't speak the language and because the city is so enormous, not to mention most people in Tokyo are rude and would straight up ignore you if you asked them a question. Hokkaido is probably the best possible place in Japan you could go because of the natural beauty, lack of an enormous population and the people are country folk (outside of Sapporo) and tend to be much nicer considering tourists are much rarer to come across on the island.

Paris suffers from two drawbacks. 1) it's a large city, and like all large cities worldwide it has its good sides and bad sides. The monuments and the nice neighborhoods are still there, but unfortunately also bad neighborhoods as well as increasing crime. And, let's face it, it's often dirty. 2) overtourism, which attracts invasive crowds, scammers (incl. a number of restaurants) and pickpockets. Like all overly touristic places worldwide, it has definitely become a place to avoid at certain times of the year.. You can try to see the "real FranceT outside Paris (and the Riiviera), which is not so crowded, where people are usually not so stressed, therefore nicer.

I've heard about the Paris Syndrom, so my expectations were at the lowest when I had to come there and study for 6 months as an exchange university student.
And you know what? I think Paris Syndrom is a coin of two sides. On one side, you have people who get disillusioned from the picture-perfect idea of Paris. On the other, there are people like me, who expect to see a dirty slum and instead find a city full of beauty.
Yes, Paris has a SERIOUS trash problem. Streets are crowded. Homeless people are wild.
But hey, all it takes to see Paris beauty is to look up. Literally. Look up to see the beautiful buildings and monuments. To lay your eyes on impressive scapes. Soon enough, behind piles of trash and dirt you start to see the famous beauty of Paris. Yes, it is not displayed for all to see. But it is there. After spending six months in Paris, I have to say, it is one of the most beautiful cities on Earth still (and I traveled a lot and have acute desire for aesthetics).
I also have to compliment people of Paris for their unique energy. Yes, some people are not someone you want to be around. But even they have this undescribable spirit. It's childlike in a sense of unbound energy and expressiveness. Feminine in a sense of wanting to let everyone around to know how you feel and make sure they feel good (or bad, depending on the situational need). I loved everyone I met in Paris, and I met homeless, prostitutes, stressed shop owners, alcoholics, businessmen, police officers, white colar workers and more.
One interaction that happened in Paris I will remember for my whole life due to how dear it is to me. I passed a ticket gate in a subway and was about to go on my business. However, I saw an old French lady fiddling with the gate. It didn't let her through, does not matter how mighty she tried (and she tried!) In the end, she decided to crawl under. My manners told me that I have to give the old lady my hand so she can use it to stand up. I stretched my palm as the lady passed the gate under. She took my hand! She stood up. Then, she looked at me, smiled and said in the sweetest voice: "Merci".
For me, this occurance allowed me to experience that I had long imagined to be the Romance of Paris. The situation was romantic. Not in a sense of eros, but in a sense sublime beauty of the passing moment. Moment of pure affection between two human beings.
In the six months I spend in Paris, I made many memories dear to me. The beauty is there. Give it a chance. If all fails, simply look up. Unless you are blind, beauty won't escape your eyes.

I have visited Paris fairly often - what I can say is that it’s both but a lot more of the glory than the gloom. It has stunning architecture, an impressive array of exceptional museums and the atmosphere is usually great.
But it’s also one of the places where you can really see what happens when a society has unsolved problems that are not really all that bad if you address them before they have time to grow but if they keep going on, while they do not ruin life, they are quite inconvenient.
I have also been to quite a few other places in France as well and one thing that sticks out about Paris to me compared to Warsaw, Berlin or Barcelona is honestly just that people seem to try to compare this much larger and especially from a European perspective quite gigantic hub of the French society with other cities and not countries.
If you stop to think of Paris as a city and start to think of it like a region, it becomes clear that people are not understanding France at all.
It’s one of the most democratic centralised states in Europe and consequently, all of the kinds of problems France may encounter due to poor people ( often foreign born migrants ) migrating to cheap neighbourhoods in its capital, despite many poor people also making it out of the bad areas again, many stay, creating a circle where some districts become crab buckets as the Anglophones like to say, places where the people who could make a difference try to get away from, leaving the rest to drift into bad habits and hard life’s.
And this matters because the discussion is HEAVILY based around this very immigration to the point where excluding it makes any attempt at understanding this city pointless.
Everyone who isn’t a fool knows that the French love to get involved in politics, frequent demonstrations and also for the fringes riots. And the capital, being the behemoth dominating France that it is, consequently gets both of those things en mass and that means that if you are visiting, plan your trip with foresight.
Don’t expect to find a city you have only ever seen on touristy movies but a region which can amplify both the beautiful and the ugly sides of urban life.
Also, while this that should usually go without saying, France is bigger than Paris and if you only listen to news reports your perspective is usually very much distorted. It’s like thinking that every cities in the USA is like Chicago - the difference is that the USA is much less centralised and so its poor migrants tend to speak Spanish instead of French and have much more room to spread out, preventing the conditions I mentioned from occurring in too many places.

People just love to act like Paris is some sort of cesspool while it’s just a fairly big city.
It got bad areas, it got homelessness and if you stick to the touristy areas you won’t encounter much of either outside of the poor migrants trying to sell you some trinket and if you are particularly unlucky some homeless drunk that’s not been picked up by the police yet and the funniest part to me is the city is so used to the riots that people drinking wine while folks clash in the background against riot police aren’t so much of a meme but rather symptomatic of a city whose chaotic city is so predictable that I am always surprised when people fail to understand how well the protests are often contained and how fast the aftermath is cleaned up.

Ok let's get it straight. I was borned and raised in Paris, well right next to it.
It is dirty in some places. You may run into a protest, if so leave, there's nothing intresting to see and come back after.
There's a shit tone of traffic jams.
    Quite a few homeless people.
Lot of immigration, near the Sacré Coeur it might be pretty unsafe for your iPhone.
Smells like shit in some places.
    BUT
    It's outsandingly beautiful.
Architecure is like nowhere else. ( Been to some nice place like Rome, Dubrovnik, La Valetta and in all honsty Paris is just different in a good way )
In the "touristic" spots it's actually safe and relatily clean.
Bars and coffees are pretty much always good, though some people might seem a bit rude.
    Atmosphere is insane.
Few places you should definitly go :
-Louvre. Especially "Cour Carrée" you'll feel like you time traveled back in the 1200s especially during late sunset )
-Sacré Coeur. Get a takeaway coffe at the bottom of Montmartre hill, climb up there and enjoy the amazing panoramic view on Paris. Get there at dawn, you'll be alone. Around the Sacré Coeur Basilica, you'll be in a medivial vibe which is insane. To me it's the most intresting place in Paris. On top of the hill, next to the Sacre Coeur there is the " Place du Tertre" a square place with bars and a lot of painters. )
-Panthéon : A place where are burried important people. But it's also a beautiful building that often seems to be forgotten by tourists. There is the Luxembourg park right next to it. You'll enjoy the beauty of the place.
-Wander in the "Marais", it's in the center of Paris, a lot of nice little streets, lots of shops, coffees etc. Near from the Louvre too.
-Go to the bar called " Le Royal ", a very good bar where you can eat the best burger of all times. It's like really good. And enjoy a nice crème brulée.
During winter, Champs Elysée are nice, but like Hollywood Boulevard it's a little weird, lots of roadmans doing their roadman things. idk.
Paris is amazing, you definitly won't be disapointed if you're like ready to discover new smells in the underground train, see some trash here and there and cross path with some rioters.
I love Paris, vive la France
