  • Ghee has been around for thousands of years and it's one of the most healing and nourishing things on Earth. Did you know that it's the same thing as the high vitamin butter oil that Weston A. Price was giving to his patients with tooth cavities? Ghee can be way too expensive if you buy it from a health store, but if you make it yourself at home using grass-fed butter, it will cost you a fraction of the price. Once you taste the rich, nutty ghee, you'll start thinking that regular butter tastes bland. So let's get cooking!

    06:27: recipe
    - pot
    - strainer + kitchen paper/cheesecloth (optional)
    - 2 sticks of butter
    Melt the butter, reduce to low fire, cook for 40 minutes. When it melts you will see a lot of foam after 5 minutes. Take the foam away, continue during the 40 minutes. It will make less and less bubbles. Every minute it will become clearer and clearer.
    Strain ghee trough the cloth into a clean jar.

    I found your video years ago when I was told to eat Ghee. I never liked the taste of store-bought though. 😝 When I made my own from watching your tutorial I couldn’t get enough of it so good 😃 Over the years I went back to butter and now going back to ghee for the health benefits. It took me a while to find this video again. Using others videos I overdid my butter and it turned into a brown butter. Yours is the BEST video out there for both information about what it does for you AND how to make it. Thanks so much. Now I downloaded the video so I will always know where it is🥰

      I'm so happy to have helped! You know, vitamin K2 that ghee has is also anti-cancer, just like butyric acid. So it's an excellent staple to have in your kitchen. My sister had lymphoma at 34! But going all natural has defeated it. Good luck in your journey! xx

    Hi Vita, very interesting film, I did not know that ghee is source of vit. K2! I use ghee next to the coconut oil to make hot dishes. These two and olive oil are my best fats in the kitchen. Ghee as 'clarified butter' is available in Polish supermarkets in quite good price (about 4 EUR for 500 g). Some time ago I went paleo diet and stopped eating oatmeal that I have really liked. Now I'm not on a paleo diet but I do not eat gluten, I wonder about returning to oatmeal and porridge, I look forward to your film about the porridge, I hope that it will encourage me to return to it. Best wishes from Poland!Gosia:)

    Great video. Very instructive. My only concern is when you said to apply ghee on burns.
    As an ex firefighter in France, applying oil, or any fat, on a burn, can increase the damage of it. (If applied just after it, it will "increase" the cooking effect (or temperature) under the skin).
    I suppose you was talking to apply ghee "after" the burn ? Or on the blister who results, well after it.
    Many emergency doctors confirmed to me, in case of a burn, cold water is the best (between 15 to 20 min) under a trickle of water.
    In ER, they use a water base gel on them also.
    Anyway. Thank you for your video again. Hope my english was not too bad as a french. ;-)

      Animal Jam TV I boil mine for 40 minutes on very low fire. In fact, my lowest fire is still too high, so I keep lifting the pot up to cool it down a little. You can also leave the foam in the pot and just move it a little to the side to check how the ghee is doing. Once the oily part becomes clear, it's ready. It sounds like your temperature was too high or you missed the exact moment when it became clear. Hope you'll make perfect ghee next time! It's all about low temperature and keeping an eye on it all the time. Good luck! :-) xx

    +VitaLivesFree, Ghee is good but there is a difference between Ghee's made of different milk. The best Ghee is the the one that is made from the milk of A2 cows. Recent research shows that A2 cow milk is the only milk that a human body can actually digest. Unfortunately A2 cows are only available in India (they are the Indian cows with a hump on their back). Some western countries (Brazil and Australia) have in the last decade imported these cows and are breeding them for milk. Sad thing is, in India to produce more milk farmers and milk producers have been breeding A1 cows imported from Europe while neglecting the good old medicinal A2 cows of India.

I've been putting off making this for pretty much no reason, but I need to make it because I have a really hard time with dairy and I know I would be able to eat this. Ghee is used in India traditionally and I was surprised in 1990s there was a huge media campaign to switch to vegetable oil as apparently ghee was supposed to be poison for heart! We always wondered people in villages lived for 100 yrs eating ghee everyday and in good quantity n remained so strong atleast in North India. I understand now that it was all the lobying which was defaming humble ghee. Atleast my mom kept feeding us with home made ghee not heeding to any media campaigns. I think ghee is wonderful for growing children and once you are an adult, you can limit your intake but still use it consistently in limited quantities. Where u would use butter , use ghee instead like everywhere. It gives such a yummy taste to everything. I love toasting my bread with ghee and also in my omlette and the best is Potato Parantha! I also put ghee over any food to give it good taste like daal n also Chapatti You can have ghee n rice with Boora (sugar with water removed not sure whats it called in west), thats just awesome. Well, sugar is bad but once in a blue moon is fine!

      You probably should have cooked it longer to get the brown bits. What

      the foam at the top disappears and the butter becomes completely clear with brown sediments at the bottom. xx

    I have been constipated throughout all my life.I would not eat this, I would eat only that, etc. Problem of such food habit is that you miss out on so many nutrients of those foods that you can not consume because of constipation. I am now 48.Recently I have started consuming ghee by mixing it with dal soup and sipping that all throughout the meal ( rice, roti, curry,etc).Whatever I eat now, I have my bowel movements extremely well( actually untinkably better) these days. Ghee is divine food. I wish I knew its miraculous benefits much earlier in life.
    I think you will be highly demoralized if you are obsessed too much with the type of the cow, what it eats and how the ghee should be prepared, etc.Try your best to get the best thing.If you get good results, stick to it.

      +Teri Teri I noticed that if I put it through the sieve or pour into the jar quite soon it will be quite grainy. But if I leave it to rest longer, then it comes out much smoother. • @Vitalivesfree
      @Vitalivesfree  Před 8 lety

      Sorry to hear it got burned! I burned my first batch as well. It's not so much about the temperature, but more about the timing. You need to take it off the fire as soon as the bottom sediment turns golden brown. Any longer and it will burn. Literally a minute or two could make a huge difference. My hob goes from 1 to 9 for the heat, and I cook ghee at 2.5-3, so pretty low. Hope next time it will come out right! xx

      Thanks. I had it in the fridge overnight, and it's very hard now. Too hard. How will I know when it's completely done cooking / is a paper coffee filter good enough? Do you need to clean the jar you put it in in a special way to fully sterilize it? Would really like to store it on the counter but I'm afraid I'll get myself sick! lol

    • @Vitalivesfree
      @Vitalivesfree  Před 8 lety

      mattd313 I divide it into two smaller jars. I keep one in the fridge, the other one on the counter. In this way, I finish a jar within a week, it stays soft and easy to spread, plus it doesn't go bad. Don't worry, you can't really make yourself sick because if it was really spoiled, it would smell and taste bad and you simply wouldn't eat it. Ghee takes a long time to cook and that's why it tastes so nutty, while clarified butter is cooked very quickly without browning the butter at all, but it still achieves the same effect of clarifying. As long as you clarify the solid bits well, it will be perfectly fine to keep on the counter. I personally didn't manage to make the coffee filter work because the filter was too dense and the ghee was just sitting there without going down, but perhaps yours will work better. I literally just wait until all the solid bits settle to the bottom, take off any remaining foam from the top, and then pour the clear liquid straight into a jar without using any filters. It works fine this way. I never sterilize the jar because as I said I always consume it within a week or two, so it doesn't really matter. xx

    I'm making it as I type - but I have a question - as I'm spooning off the foam, I'm seeing that underneath the little container that I'm spooning the foam off into, there is quite a bit of actual butter beneath it and I feel like I'm somehow wasting good butter. Is this okay? I thought yikes - and put some back but then the foam just appeared again. :0

    • @Vitalivesfree
      @Vitalivesfree  Před 9 lety

      There will inevitably be a little butter, but not much. Just try to kind of brush the spoon along the edge of the pot, so that some of the butter can run back into the pot. Also wait until a lot of the foam collects, it will be easier to take it off in that way. xx

      VitaLivesFree Actually I have a bit more information for everyone as apparently I have burnt my first batch of ghee. I followed your instructions but I think everyone needs to really make sure they cook this in a small pot. I googled 'I burnt my ghee' and by gosh, I did. It's too dark and has little brown spots in it and apparently if the pot is too large, it gives the butter too much 'surface' and is much more prone to scorching. Damn! And it smelled bad. No nuts here. Sigh. I wasted all that butter. Sad face..... Well, try try again soon.
