This video will show you how to recover your phone from problems with Windows 10 Tech Preview or other issues that result in loss of function.

This is about the 5th time I've had to use the recovery tool to fix a phone that Windows 10 Tech Preview messed up. I've used the tool on a Lumia 521, 1020, 928, and 1520.

I got the sad face of doom on my one day old Lumia 550 and was about to throw the thing at a wall when I discovered your post. I now have a working phone that appears more stable and has picture messaging too. Before the boot my mms settings were wrong and couldn't be changed. Now mms is functional. I am stunned at how easy it was to follow your instructions and recover my phone. Thanks dude.

gr8 help thanks a lot...one thing i would like add is that after downloading if someone encounter issue like phone not detecting just close the tool and open it again and start the process all over again it doesn't require downloading again and everything will be fine

This is great. Just one thing to add... if you find the phone still can't be detected, then try a different (hi-speed) USB cable. I was getting frustrated that the recovery tool still couldn't detect the device but after changing the cable, hey-presto... Hope this helps... (Also, be sure to click to install the software before the phone restarts on it's own, otherwise it will go back to the sad face again. If this happens, just restart the process and try again)

What software is your laptop? Is the software you're installing on the device the one on your laptop? I use W10 on my laptop , will the device work since it got bricked due to the induced upgrade of W10?

Usually there’s a problem with a firmware trying to overwrite the existing files with an updated version of those files. The problem can be it has been stopped during the process of writing files to the system, causing the files to be corrupted or missing. If you find the sad face, the update has failed and that can be because the update file(s) that are needed to update the software are missing. Leaving the system both unbootable and impossible to update without using a PC.

It gets as far as the Microsoft text...vibrates then shuts down and tries to start up again

Hi there! I'm experiencing a similar issue, my new Lumia 950 Dual SIM (less than a month old) is in a never ending reboot loop... I've done everything I could to fix it, including the use of the Device Recovery Tool, but when I'm going through the initial settings, the loop starts again.
I'm outside the country with no guarantee support at all... I need to know if there's something I can do to have my phone back. Thanks!

If it's less than a month old I would return it. Buy a cheap phone to hold you over and wait for a replacement or repair. You could try the recovery tool again.
