How to make snowmobilers Mad. Jeeps on a groomed trail!

- To clarify what happened before everyone gets mad…. He was out getting a Christmas tree with his family in an area near the trails that is perfectly legal and open to drive in. But when his clutch started giving him trouble he realized he wasn’t going to make it back through the snow he drove through to get there. So in order to get his family out of the woods as night was falling, he chose the packed down snowmobile trail that he was right next to and led directly out of the woods hoping the Jeep would make it. Unfortunately it didn’t and he was stranded in the middle of the trail. So he used his winch to pull himself further into the trail system and to an intersection where he wasn’t blocking any trails. Luckily the tracked @Jeep and a @YankumRopes made quick work of pulling it out without doing any damage to the trail.
As far as whether he made the right decision or not… I will say that if I was trying to get my family out of the woods as night was setting in and a groomed snowmobile trail looked like my only option…. You can bet your ass that I’m taking that trail.
Also, I tell you why I finally ditched @GoPro and have switched over to @DJI Action cameras. I don’t get do overs, so I need a camera that simply works every time.

A lot of people seem to confuse a clutch with a clutch control mechanism. A clutch control mechanism is any part of the system that engages and disengages the clutch when push in and release the pedal. When that system fails you can indeed shift without the clutch and still drive the vehicle, if you have the ability to get it moving.
The clutch is the mechanical friction link between the engine and transmission. If that link between the engine and transmission fails, you CANNOT drive the vehicle in any way. There are simply no two ways about that and if you think different you’re wrong.
@@SagebrushRambles on every single video that involves a clutch. The bad part is that you guys only see the public comments on CZcams. In addition to the few that you see here, I got 7 emails and direct messages within the first 30 minutes of this video being posted telling me how dumb we all were and that it could have just been driven out if we knew what we were doing. There are also already about a dozen more comments saying basically the same thing that got denied by the automatic filters because of the words that were used. It amazes me how people go out of their way to try and make themselves look so smart to a bunch of strangers for no reason, only to prove that they have no clue what they’re talking about.
haha funny you say this. had the clutch in a honda go bad about a year ago but it went bad in the good way. it was stuck engaged. start the car in first and drive. if it had been close to home i would have likely called for a tow but was about 100 miles from home so it would have been an expensive tow. it was my first major experience shifting without the clutch. i don't know if it is related that but think it may have hurt the syncros some since i will sometimes have to shift it into 2nd before shifting into first or else it feels like your grinding gears to try and get into 1st

Someone was doing that with me on another CZcams channel yesterday. Telling me that driving a wedge into the back cut when felling a tree isn’t lifting the tree, it’s spreading the kerf. I explained it three different ways to try and help him understand, each time he came back calling me an idiot, saying I’ve never felled a tree, etc. I didn’t call him any names or mention him calling me names at all, I just tried to help him understand. Of course I’m aware that some people will never understand, and at some point I need to stop communicating with them.

I drive a Kia Soul with gear to pull myself out, I also have it made to drive in snow under 18 inches deep. I also have "Baby Truck" which is an Isuzu Amigo with a fun transmission in it, top speed is 45mph. My old boss named it.

I snowmobile and I have NO problem with this type of recovery. If he was just out on a snowmobile trail because he ignored the signs, I may have a few things to say. Casey thanks for getting him out, like he said 'You're the man, dude'.

99% of snowmobile trails in oregon are groomed and maintained by volunteer operators. Thanks for promoting the sign at the trail head! I'm a snowmobiler and groomer operator.

Read the description, listened to the opening statement...seriously, he tried whatever way possible to get himself and his family out. That is priority #1...if it pisses someone off, too bad, at least he wasn't out there ripping up and down the groomed trails tearing them up recklessly...he just wanted an easier out so his hurt vehicle might have a chance to get out.
You gotta admit, those tracks are amazing. So simple yet so effective.
I'm impressed that so many others like the Sheriff, groomer, and even the Portal volunteer were able to do their bit so quickly to ultimately get Casey out and help this guy's recovery go so smoothly. Where I am, there are certainly clubs that will all help members, but I could not find any information on any volunteer off road recovery groups that will try and help anyone. I have to give the Portal guy some credit. Given we really don't know anything about him, or his rig, he still showed up to help, assessed the situation to be more than he felt he could manage, and rather than tear up the track and vehicles trying (I assume this was pre-groomer), stepped back and recommended Casey. To my mind, that isn't a fail, that is just a wise and conscientious decision. 👍👍🇨🇦

So I was on the first day recovery. We volunteer with a group called Offroad Recovery Portal and we only go off the information we were given. The day we went out we were told the guy was right off the main road and that the snow was packed. The guy was over a mile off the road in on trails that were supposed to be closed and the snow was at least 2ft of un-groomed mashed potato type of snow. We had hell trying to get to the guy in the first place with how much we sank into the snow and when we found him he told us that he wasn't just stuck but that there was absolutely 0 clutch left and we had to tow him up a decent grade. We ended up having to call it quits because our vehicle was struggling in the deep snow and there was no way we could have towed the Jeep out with us.

Thanks for reconsidering your previous position and allowing those rescued to express their appreciation and gratitude for all you do to rescue them. Allowing others to do so makes them feel they have done something so as not to appear to be taking advantage. It’s not a matter if covering the costs of a rescue, it’s about allowing another to feel good about themselves.

Even having someone turn up and not saying it's x amount of money before we start must be amazing, so definitely deserves to be rewarded what people can afford.
As a farmer I've towed out a number of people over the years but just local nothing like what this chap is doing.
Never asked to be paid but if someone insisted I didn't turn it down either, well apart from a fishing family in two cars.
Got son in law out and he paid me but I refused father in the other car when he also offered, said his son in law had paid 👍

Good Job! It's nice when the person you're towing actually knows what to do. Keeping the right tension on the tow rope is a big plus!!
Good job guys, Casey did a great job on the recovery, the dude being recovered knowing what to do, and Wes for filming the action and the scenery. I dunno, but I've always loved the winter, I like seeing my winter wonderland forests 🤷. I remember one morning when I was ten years old, I woke up to mom making her coffee and having her morning cigarette, mom having a cup of hot cocoa waiting for me and staring out of the slider to the 12 acres of forest we had and behold the beauty of all the trees covered with ice from the freezing rain we had the night before. Every tree was covered with ice and sparkling with light from the sun. It was a sight I'd never forget, but also a day I'd never forget. Same day my dad rolled his truck 6 times on the express way as he lost control due to black ice while coming home from working third shift. His pride and joy, his Ford ranger was totalled, but dad was fine. It was a thing of beauty from the safety of your home but a nightmare to do anything in it.

@@nemssi3302 Yes. Views, money from sponsors, and donations from the Super Thanks. I'm not sure if he gets any kickbacks from the ads, or not. Still, that's what covers it. The views during the summer, when he's not doing recoveries much, lets him save up money for keeping the recoveries, during the winter, free.
The towing business pays for everything else in his life.
The towing business doesn’t pay for anything. This CZcams project has killed the tow company and it hasn’t turned a profit all year. I’ve done a total of 5 paid towing jobs in 2022.

I got a little spunky last week on a nice sunny but COLD day here in South Eastern Idaho, and went toward the mountains on my new Polaris 570 Trail quad. I went about 2 miles, 1.5 of which was a paved road, and then got hopelessly stuck in 3' of snow. The snow under the crust was that granular stuff like you have explained before. I was able to call my G/F and have have her drive my Jeep close enough to me so that I could use it for a dead-man to hook my winch too. I will just have to wait for spring. What if I had made it so far that the Jeep could not get there? At 75 years of age, you would think that I SHOULD know better!!!!!
@@CaseyLaDelle Yikes! I didn't know that it had effected you so negatively. I'd have thought that the popularity of your channel would have increased the number of calls. Just from people who need a tow and figure they'd call you to get a tow and meet you at the same time, at least. Or is it that people are worried about being videoed and posted on YT?
I also didn't realize that you had so many viewers in your area, if it's the case that they didn't want to be videoed.
I'm sorry to hear that it's had such an impact on your towing company. I hope things change in the next year and you'll be so flooded with calls that you'll have difficulty finding the time to make YT videos.

Your Jeep has tracks and clearly Identifies as a snowmobile. I see no issues with the recovery. I bet snowmobilers are mad because they do not have heat and windshield wipers.

The sign says closed to all motorized vehicles, so snowmobile aren't allowed on it either. Even if it said closed to wheeled vehicles, Casey could still go on it.

Been there done that smoked a clutch trying to get a stuck buddy out. Luckily I was close enough to the main road the flatbed tow truck winch could reach me. The weather and views AMAZING. The JKY driver did an excellent job getting pulled. what an amazing rescue thank you Casey and Wes!!

I've had both happen at different times. The first was when the clutch grenaded on a windy, mountain highway (downshifted going up a grade and had nothing but neutral). The second time was when the clutch slave cylinder failed, and had to drive back to the shop 60 miles without the clutch. Fortunately I only had to stop once on that drive, and it would still start up in second.

@@kevinwalters7615 My pickup has two transmissions and a transfer case. One time at the tire shop, the employee went out to get my truck and was just sitting there too long. I went over and he had put the 2nd box in neutral, front box was in reverse. And he couldn’t understand why it wasn’t moving. I told him to put the 2nd box back in 4th like I had it, and drive the front box like normal. Fourth gear goes straight through without any reduction, so it’s like it’s not even there. You’re not going anywhere if anything’s in neutral. They’ve had me drive the truck in myself since then.

You need to throw a light bar with tow truck style flashing lights on the roof. It would help on recoveries and be easily recognizable as an emergency vehicle.

As long as you don’t leave ruts I don’t see a problem, fighting ruts on a snowmobile is the frustration. Glad they were able to groom the trail.
When I was cross country skiing, I disliked groomed trails, preferring to break trails through the woods. In that way, I avoided the skating skiiers. But the grooming of that trail to retrieve that Jeep was a really good idea. Great job Casey and Wes.
As a snowmobiler, XC skier and snowshoer, you're right that we get mad when people rut up the trail. Once the snow flies the roads are closed and they shouldn't be there. Usually they drive in early in the morning when everything is frozen solid, the sun comes out and softens up the snow and they're stuck. Which is also the best way to get them out, early in the morning.
I use to live in Elko Nevada, and there was a canyon in the Ruby Mountains called Lamoile Canyon. In the winter it was closed to all cars/pickups,SUVs. It was heavily used by snowmobiles. One year there was a yahoo that took his rig on this snowmobile trail. He was 2 miles in from the trail head, and fell through the crust. The packed snow trail was 5' deep. The yahoo went in clear to the frame. He had to spend $1000s of dollars to get his rig out + the Forest Service fined him a huge amount, AND, made him foot the bill to repair the trail for the snowmobiles. He could not even leave his rig there till spring either. They MADE him get it out. It is a wonder that his rig was not vandalized on top of that. He was an idiot, and he paid the price. There were thousands of other roads that he could have tried to navigate, but his poor decision cost him a lot of money.
We have some unplowed roads that are shared snowmobile/4WD, it’s not easy for the snowmobiles to navigate our tracks. Sometimes they’re 2-3 feet deep. They’ll act unhappy about the situation, but there are some snowmobile only trails/roads they could go on. They chose to go where 4WDs can go.
Boo hoo. Buy your own property and groom it. You must ride bikes in the summer and think the whole road is yours. Big baby.

It's negative digits here in Spokane, now. lol
I grew up in McCall Id. where almost always the winter conditions are like this. Many times over the years have had Mt. Rescues get sloppy, as many snowmobilers ride up to the mineing towns, drink a bit, and take chances, and get in trouble. I coulld have used that over the years, as I have beat the crap out of my body over the years to get many out of much worse, and it just seems like you have the right tool for the right job. Maybe when I win the lottery I will be back into mountain rescue with something like that. Great Video, and Love that you put your Right TOOL for the task of Service. As for Pissed Off Snowmobilers, lol, they sure seem entitled sometimes, but that is only a few, most are pretty good sports! GOD Bless!

Over the years I have owned auto repair shops, run tow trucks, operated heavy equipment and had a hobby farm. All my life I have loved snowmobiling. Much of what you show on your channel I have lived in real life. Your generosity in helping others is what I appreciate most! Snowmobilers wont be enraged by a recovery operation messing up the trail. Our group always stopped along our route to offer assistance to anyone who needed it. I think most would do the same. Groomed trails often paid a price…(necessary evil)! If I may make a suggestion…. Perhaps incorporating a set of hand-held two-way radios to communicate between vehicle operators when towing a disabled vehicle out of trouble would help you get the job done even better than you do now. What do you think? Cheers!

Most Central Oregon Snowmobilers are pretty easy-going,. Not too many people ride that low of elevation, but all the Snowmobilers I know would offer a helping hand if they came across this scenario, and are most likely the ones who were running the groomer that particular day/day's.
Pretty cool to be able to drive down a snowmobile trail....
I had to contact Washington Offroad Recovery Network to get myself pulled out of the snow in an area that tow companies wouldn't service till spring. I would love a video about what to do if you do get stuck offroad in the snow.
I'd check out some winch YT channels. While many don't specifically talk about snow, the winching remains nearly the same. Ronny Stahl is a good one to check out, they have some videos on how they work a winch line to winch backwards and other maneuvers using snatch blocks and such.
