    I am enjoying the sewing content on your channel 😊 I have been quilting for close to 20 years and made many. My first quilt was a sampler quilt block quilt all made by hand and hand quilted. The jeans look really good on you 😊

    I also made the red edge sweater. Because I have a very large stash, I used scraps for a lot of the sweater. Otherwise, it would have been very expensive,as well as adding even more to my stash. You are right that the sleeve directions are quite unusual. I did go by the directions, however, and they look ok.

    Thank you for this episode! I love how you combine the joy of knitting with challenge! I often shy away from too difficult knits and stick to what I know works, but you inspire me to try out more things :D

    Hi Mel, I’m still catching up 😀. My mind is blown by your hand quilting. I never knew you could do it like that. Just sew it together. All the women in my family did what I see is now called English Paper Piecing but they always just called patchwork. I am about to start a quilt out of Indian block prints and I’d just assumed EPP was the only way to do it. Now I need to go and research how best to do it. Thank you for your thoughtful and in depth discussions. Your jeans are stunning.

    • @melmakesstuff

      Thank you! EPP looks incredibly daunting to me so I haven't tried it, but I am finding this method of hand quilting that I'm using to be pretty easy. If you look up Ginny Beyer online or can find one of her books, her instructions are very clear (in my opinion, at least :-))

    Your Bohus sweater is beautiful! I appreciate the depth of your discussions about your knitting, they are so educational. I used to quilt for many years and Ginny Beyer was a quilting superstar back in the day, way before social media.

    Congrats on getting through the great sleeve debacle of 2021! Your sweater looks great. I'm glad to hear the sewing class was good. I don't know if I commented last time that I live outside Boston so I will definitely be watching to see if the shop in NH offers it again in the future. I would love to have that kind of help with fitting. Enjoy the wool classing. Can't wait to hear about it!

    What a surprise! Thank you for the shout out. 🥰 Right back atcha. 😘
    Your jeans are amaaaazing! I would love to do a class where someone would coach me on what adjustments to make. That would be so valuable. I love the teal topstitching! I was literally knitting on my cable project while watching. I finally bit the bullet and reserved the afternoon to just focus on getting it going. I came up with a system that seems to be working, although not nearly as organized as yours. We’ll see how well it serves me going forward. Safe travels! Here’s to pursuing new avenues and learning for the sake of learning!

    Hello, I loved seeing the finished Bohus sweater and the elegant way you ending up doing the sleeves. That was a lot of work. Hearing about the sewing class was really interesting too and it made me realise it would be a good way to refresh my skills, so will research some classes where I live in the UK.
    I love quilts as well and have only made one small lap one in the past by hand with English paper piecing. That took so long and my enthusiasm to try again has only recently reappeared. Seeing your projects is inspiring. Thanks for another lovely podcast.

      Paper piecing, wow - I’m impressed! One of my friends has been working on an EPP hexagon quilt for a few years and it’s SO beautiful. I haven’t gotten the courage to try that technique yet 😉

    If you want to see the malabrigo dyeing facility, I have an episode called Places You Can Knit: Uruguay and there is cottage from the dyeing centre!! It is a very hands on process still. I have to say I almost always just do the depth of sleeve that I think will work for me as I expect they will never fit otherwise! Your bohus turned out great!!

    • @melmakesstuff
      @melmakesstuff  Před 2 lety +1

      I just went and checked out your Uruguay episode - so cool! I love to see how manual so many of these dyeing processes still are. Re: the sleeves, I think I need to start doing that too (just doing my own thing). I always start out following the pattern, but I need to get a bit better at trusting my gut earlier in the process 🤣

    If you decide to work any time (set in) sleeves in flat, Andrea of Fruityknitting podcast has more than one video explaining how to adjust them in order to match the modifications made on the body pieces... the method you intuitively used on the Bohus gives the same result (I think, I'm not such an expert knitter, but I like to learn new tecniques and all tips and triks) .

    Another thoughtful podcast! We need to etch out time to look over the quilts I have from Grandma, too. I have some notes I took while she told me about the friendship quilt (I’ve got it). And maybe we need to recreate this ourselves!

    You are my favorite podcaster :) So much technical insight and genuine desire to share the knowledge! Thank you!
    I do the same with the bulb stitch markers, but I use even more of them: one/multiple colors for decreases + bulbs in another color to mark every tenth row if it's a longer stretch (it kinda motivates me). Gonna adopt your chart mapping system. I use a less detailed way myself, but also on paper.
    Currently stuck on the sleeve island with my Bohus (blue shimmer) out of Holst Garn. It turns out great and the colors are on point. I share your pain with too many projects on the needles. I usually have two, but these days I have 3 sweaters and it feels like it takes too long. Better focus on one and finish it sooner :)

    • @ellenhenrie4826
      @ellenhenrie4826 Před 2 lety

      Hi Nadia - that Blue Shimmer has caught my eye a few times. Is there a place that has the color conversion to Holst? Or did you do it by eye? Thanks! Ellen

    • @nadiarogo4511
      @nadiarogo4511 Před 2 lety

      @@ellenhenrie4826 Hi Ellen, I did it by eye and it definitely worked out well. I used Supersoft, held single, 3 mm wood needles. Here is the conversion Ii used:
      FF27 = 001 Nougat (main color of the sweater)
      FF33 = 056 Glacier
      FF51 = 058 Navy heather
      FF55/FF49 = 059 Vintage Heather (there is no difference between these two on the photo in the book)
      FF32 = 080 Spring
      FF19 = 091 Oatmeal
      FF59 = 015 Mouflon
      On rnds 14 and 15 of the chart, I used "055 Iced" instead of FF33/056 Glacier.
      (On rnds 66-end I changed the chart to be symmetrical, instead of random as in the pattern)

      @@ellenhenrie4826 You're very welcome! Don't get discouraged when you first start working with it, it is rustic and still has spinning oil in it (that's why the low price). Make a swatch and block it and you will be amazed at the bloomed fabric it produces, so drapey and beautiful. It softens up immensly after blocking, too. I can wear long sleeved fitted sweater with short sleeve tshirt underneath and not feel it. It's surprising to me that not many people are using holst garn. It's really top quality and good for the environment.

    Thanks, Theresa

    • @melmakesstuff
      @melmakesstuff  Před rokem

      It really depends! Right now I’m not doing any quilting at all. It’s rare that I go a day without knitting but it does happen. Most days, I’d say 2-3 hours, sometimes much more.
