    I heard from someone that the bass part was written by Johnny Marr, and performed by Rourke because Marr... has 'only got two hands'.

    Andy Fucking Rourke, one of the most underrated bassists of all time. Update 5/29/23: RIP Andy Rourke. One of the key reasons that this band had such a sonically unique sound. The marriage of Andy's funky bass with Johnny Marr's iconic licks are the reason I fell in love with this band and he will be missed sorely by the music community.

      Me too! They woke me up and snapped me out of the prison of my own mind! They filled me (still do 30 years later) with joy amazement curiosity and a fighting spirit, enough courage to run away from an abusive household and to acknowledge and feel things that were previously too scary or confusing before, Morrissey's lyrics helped me connect to my own emotions. I was very quiet and isolated as a young teenager and kept it all hidden away, hearing The Smiths brought it out of me, I doubt that any psychologist or counselor would have been able to do that at the time!

      I always maintain that without Rourke and Joyce, Marr's riffs and Morrissey's lyrics wouldn't have worked as well as they did. They were so tight they gave the other two licence to do their own thing.

      This was before Meat Is Murder was released and I remember seeing this fantastic performance at the time and feeling so let down by the version on the album which is really lacking the bounce and verve of this version

    As a guy who mostly listened to metal and hard rock in the 80s growing up, Goddamn the Smiths were fantastic. Rourke straight killed this baseline. This song is fucking perfection. Everyone in this band is tearing shit up and this was an epic live performance.

    When I met Andy Rourke in 1997 in LA at Hard Rock Cafe after the Smiths convention I told him how much I loved the flourish he does at the end of this song. I asked if he was excited when he wrote that part, he laughed and said "Yeah I had a big smile on my face when I came up with that!"

    I love how so many people there are standing very still, listening reverently: Oh yea, a crack on the head and all that ... while others are just dancing and loving it. Those dancers were the 'early clue to the new direction.' The Mondays and Roses were just minutes away. Thing is, the Smiths made some great dance music.

      Maybe in the vague genre of rock but really the smiths sound was always very bass driven more so over everything. And was perfect that way. Unless you mean as far as how much respect andy got.
