  • Here we are trying to find the best remedy for a sick 1956 Remington Sportsman 58 by replacing the worn out fore--end ring washer with a replacement flat ring offered by an eBay seller. We tried a store bought o-ring in our last video with success but it's round construction is not what Remington originally used and may not be ideal in the long term so this flat washer test was conducted. We also replaced the fore end ring with Remingtons upgraded part to help save the washer.
So we tried out the flat ring with 2 rounds of trap on a rainy day where I was on the line alone so we got the gun nice and hot. The gun shot a 20 and a very distressing 24 without a stumble.
Here is a link to the o-ring trials video....

Millsurp Garage, Since a shotgun is a point and shoot firearm it stands to reason that some of them just fit and feel better when handeling them. I owned a lot of shotguns of the semi and slide action and SxS type and as much as I like the looks of Remingtons I have found myself favoring the Mossberg 500 suits my type of shooting the best. My second choice is a a simple Stevens 311 SxS in 20 gauge. I am a hunter of small game and not very good on the sporting clays range . I too like finding good guns that just need some attention and make the clean up and repair . Good job on this model 58 you and the shotgun most certainly deserve the Score 24 Award.👍👍👍🍻🇺🇸✌🏻😎

I’m a bit guilty for dismissing it all these years as a “failed” design that was “fixed” by the Remington Model 100……well……it is….but I was still guilty mainly because with the right combination of set up, maintenance, and care….it need not be dismissed.
      I actually like the thing!

The round section o ring seems to be a pretty good stand-in.

It certainly is…… it worked very well. I will be using the replacement flat washer for now as Terry (the eBay seller) wants me to test it and follow up with him long term and I agreed.
The o-ring I selected needs a test too!

Watch carefully, there’s a lot of thrashed beaters out there, I’m assuming due to the fact that you really have to care for this one…..gas relief selectors, fore-end washers, brand new to Remington gas pistons and chambers to clean……a lot of these went neglected. Wait for a winner.
