    I’m 60. As a kid I remember the very large civil defence siren going off in the very early morning. I was terrified because I knew what it was for. Late at night on TV there were regular tests of “the emergency broadcast system”. My father explained to me the nuclear triad and MAD policy. Everyone would benefit by watching films of nuke test explosions IMHO. Most people have no idea of the power of these systems of destruction.

    I spent most of my professional life involved in deterring nuclear war, and if that failed, executing it as ordered. At the Strategic Air Command during the Cold War, our motto was “Peace…is our profession.” The dots were meant to be ominous. Our system was and remains entirely defensive. Totally clear conscience about that. All I can say is her intuition is, in my view, correct for a whole set of reasons mostly lost in a miasma of contemporary hysterias. ☮️

    If the strategic purpose of nuclear weapons is deterrence towards a nuclear armed aggressor;
    Then, the limit for the number of strategically effective nuclear weapons is necessarily lower than the number of nuclear weapons required to cause nuclear Armageddon.
    The problem of nations stockpiling weapons above this limit is a problem in state level decision making, and this is where effective restraints can be applied.
    Nuclear technology isn't difficult in theory, it's difficult in practice, as it requires some level of industry and capital investment, which you'd need a state or large organization to do so.
    Having said that, I think it's also necessary to have safe civilian applications for nuclear technology. It's a different set of technologies than weapons, and transparency and oversight are easier to achieve. It still takes state level intervention to set safety standards, so there's a part for everyone to play. It's getting difficult to imagine us all living within our current individual energy budgets without adopting a lot of fuel that doesn't produce greenhouse gases. I don't even mind thinking about things like nuclear powered cargo ships and nuclear powered freight trains at this point.

    I beg to differ radically: we shouldn't be afraid of anything. I believe we attract probable negative outcomes by first visualizing them with an initial pang of anxiety and then by investing more and more fear-based emotional energy to turn them into semi-permanent astral realities. Since we feed these probable outcomes with the energy of our fears, we can become quite literally attached to them and even engulfed by them. I don't claim authorship of this idea.

    • @bostinroid4434
      @bostinroid4434 Před 6 měsíci

      Fear is an evolved trait best seen as an adaptation which keeps us safe. Of course, bad actors exploit this and use it to manipulate our opinions, choices and behaviors, or it paralyzes a person to the point of indecision, immobility and reclusivity, but we actually prepare for and even potentially prevent negative outcomes by being afraid.
      There's a book called The Gift of Fear, by an Evolutionary psychologist. I'd recommend it.
      If you see no usefulness is fear, your instincts have dulled, the very threat censors in your brain have been unused for so long they don't function properly anymore. It's to the point you actually see these evolutionary adaptations as hindrances, as harmful and even as toxic, and this is likely a result of being in a safe environment which never required you to identify threats and strategize how to handle them because you just weren't faced with ones of any significance.

    The speed of light isn’t constant because time and distance aren’t constant. It’s not complicated. There is so much wrong in cosmology. It’s almost entirely based on assumptions, assumptions of dark matter assumptions of dark energy assumptions of a universe expanding from nothing into oblivion for no reason assumptions of a single age of the universe and the assumption that everything just appeared from nothing like magic. Redshift is from a light source from a greater mass. Distant galaxies are more redshifted because of the greater amount of mass that the light has to pass by. The vacuum energy is from black holes absorbing space time, not from imaginary inflatons. Dark matter is assumed because the correct differing measures of distance and time are not being taken into account. Matter and energy cannot make or direct themselves and they are only going from order to disorder disproving the idea that they made and directed themselves. The problem is that cosmologists are not considering the actual evidence in front of them. The evidence is one giant elephant 🐘 in the room that the (secular) scientists try their hardest to ignore and pretend that the elephant 🐘 isn’t there when the elephant 🐘 of actual physics is there. The speed of light is NOT constant because the measurements of time and distance are NOT constant throughout the universe. The light from distant galaxies only slows down when it encounters the mass inside of a galaxy according to general relativity which is an observed fact. There’s no excuse for scientists to be making up their own version of physics.
