We just moved in to our first apartment in Lisbon! In this video, we go into a bit more detail about why we chose the apartment, and of course, we show you a tour! This is a 2 bedroom 2 bath top floor apartment in Campo de Ourique, Lisbon, Portugal. We're highlighting some things that are different between American and Portuguese apartments, and will hopefully provide some ideas for what you can expect if/when you choose to move here.

as a portuguese, i have to advise anyone to visit apartments in winter.
just buy an apartment *after visiting it in winter* . Many old houses in Lisbon do not have proper insulation, or may have problems with humidity. it is a very typical problem for apartments in lisbon.
you should see how theapartment performs in the wet winter. because it can be a problem.
I think that renting is not a problem because you can always rent another, but for something more permanent, just buy in the winter.

It's not just Lisbon, it's the whole country. The new buildings are more current with energy certificates.
You can also in certain cases rent with the option to buy. That gives you the chance to get to know the house or flat pretty well let’s say over the course of a year, as well as the surroundings. Get a feel of the neighbors, which may or may not be problematic. Purchasing is a bigger commitment and it could involve loss of money if you decide you cannot live there after a few months, so this solution keeps all of your options open. Personally I advise at least a year renting so you get to see even regarding summer celebrations when people traditionally get pretty loud. I hate noise and I work shifts so in my case that would really put me off as I really need to rest at varying hours of the day. Some people love partying so to them it’s a great way to mingle with others and get more into the local vibe. In any case I would say it’s probably too early for you guys to buy a property for yourselves to live in with so much left to learn yet. It’s your honeymoon phase with the country, there is so much you are getting to know right now that everything seems amazing. Perfectly normal for anyone. You either hate the place straight away and get put off, or you find it great and can’t wait to experience everything at hand. In time you will have a list of things that annoy you and if they are manageable, that’s when you know you’ve found a long term place to live.
Lisboa isn’t a city I would like to live in, but it does have some perks. It didn’t happen this year, but under normal conditions the popular saints celebrations are something everyone should experience at least once. The vibe is great, the food is amazing, the warm breeze of the summer nights is welcoming and you just can’t get enough of it. In fact most people who like that sort of thing have their holidays precisely during that period in order to enjoy it to the fullest and often that includes staying up to see the sunrise. There is something about staying awake all night and see the sun dawn on you as you welcome the first rays, bringing an inner peace that is very hard to describe. It’s almost cathartic, it’s a new day full of possibilities, dreams and hopes. And the light in Lisboa is said to be like no other place in the world. Guess what, it’s partially due to the tiles on the outside of the buildings that reflect and amplify the natural sun light.
Although I am Portuguese I’m not an expert in the subject of tiles but to my understanding those are Moroccan style tiles. Traditional Portuguese tiles are blue and white only and they tend do depict everyday life scenes, landscapes or religious motives. If you really like them it’s possible to order a panel custom made for yourselves once you have your own property. It’s not the cheapest option to decorate a wall, but on the upside as long as they are fixated right it’s maintenance free for life and really easy to clean. Just make sure there are no wiring or plumbing on that particular wall or you may one day have to tear it down which would be a shame.
So much to say and so little time. But I see that having this channel is bringing you guys a ton of information in record time. That’s a big boost that wouldn’t be possible a few years ago. It’s also part of the Portuguese hospitality, we like to welcome those that respect our culture and heritage and show interest in hearing our stories, and for those we often go out of our way to help them out, be it in giving directions or sharing knowledge. If you guys are history buffs, boy are you in for the time of your lives. Close to 9 centuries of one of the world’s most adventurous people that set out to the unknown, giving new worlds to the world. A country that still bares signs of the templar knights, you have to visit Tomar, you won’t be able to forgive yourselves if you leave one day and haven’t been there. Sintra is amazing, do yourselves a favor and visit Quinta da Regaleira. The admission fee is peanuts, you won’t regret it. Capela dos ossos is another place you cannot pass unless you are really impressionable. The chapel is made of human bones, it’s estimated that there are 5000 skeletons in its composition, and the inscription that greets the visitors is meant to give everyone food for thought “Nós ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos” which translates into Us bones that are laying here await for yours. It seems creepy but in fact its a profound way of saying Carpe Diem. It faces us with our inevitable end, and that if we want to enjoy life, this is it, now is the time to do it. And many other beautiful places that are too numerous to mention in a comment. Hope this has been helpful in some way and enjoy what this country has to offer. Granted that Portugal isn’t a very large piece of land, but it’s so well packed with beautiful and interesting places so visit that you promise yourself not to do any more stops in order to reach your destination and you keep breaking it. Every nook and cranny has some history attached to it, you will find palaces and castles spread throughout, gorgeous landscapes, there are plenty of museums, you may be interested in going to a fado house… man, I’m going to spend the whole night writing this if I don’t force myself to stop.

Hope to visit as soon as covid allows for safe traveling. I’ve travelled to Europe and Africa. Can you suggest places to visit for a person looking to relocate (working retirement). I’d like my housing expenses to not exceed $1000 USD. Hope to visit in March/April 2022.
@@tooannoying you do realise that the change rates can vary, and I know firsthand that’s a pain. That budget isn’t fantastic for one of the major cities, but there’s plenty of choice that’s more affordable.
Depending on your needs of being close to an airport, whether you plan to have your own car, you can go inland and keep within your budget fairly easily. The country is quite narrow, only 200 km wide or so, which means it doesn’t take long to get to the shore. There are advantages to living inland if your lifestyle allows for it. You are also closer to the border with Spain which has it’s upsides.
My advice is to contact a reputable real estate agency and get them to show you some possibilities. Portugal wasn’t one of the first countries to get internet so it’s structure is more modern than some other countries and coverage is mainly good all around.
Be methodical and whatever are your current or foreseeable needs and see how that compares with what is available. It’s just too extensive to cover all possibilities, and in the end you always need to dive in deep if you want to start again somewhere else. The internet is a great help, you can find a lot of information.
Prices are changing according to demand, it’s as if half of the world is trying to move here now. So be prepared to have some wiggle room. No one can promise what will happen in a couple of years or how expensive things will be but that uncertainty is global right now. Best of luck
The shower is absolutely fine, Europe style on a glider bar. The landlord cut a bit of a financial corner here and didn’t install a more updated shower tray and he didn’t install shower doors. The curtain situation is a bit outdated and the shower curtain is too short. Just pop into IKEA and get a longer one, problem solved. Depending on your actual physical size, you could also just sit in the shower ( I’m small enough 😂). Yes, it would have been better to install a walk in shower with a glass partition, but, hey it works and that is such a minor thing. The huuuuge plus is that you have central heating ! THAT makes all the difference, you’ll see 😉. And, we don’t use noisy and unhealthy aircons, that’s why you have proper windows that open fully and depending on the make/model can be tilted for cross ventilation. You just move the large window handle counter clockwise up to 12 o clock and tip the window towards you....Presto ! It can be a bit scary at first because you might think that the whole window is falling out of its anker , but trust me... we all do it 😬 it is safe, super efficient and doesn’t cost a thang 😉
You guys found a real good deal with that rental without the headache of having to set up utilities yourselves. Sounds like your landlords are really good people. Would like to see what your monthly cost of living would be once you're more settled in. Thanks for this!

My husband and and I are originally from Mexico, and have lived in Miami for the past 15 years. We are planning to move to Portugal in the near future. Congrats for your new apartment. When I went to the USA I also felt surprised with some things, but in the opposite way: washing machines in the cellar; fridge, cooker, washing machine way bigger than in Portugal. The beds are different, too, higher. Neighbours are a matter of luck. Foreign people who live in Spain are constantly complaining about the noise made by their Spanish neighbours and use some isolating material to avoid the level of noise. Creepy!
Yep, the shower thing is pretty standard and, if you ask me, pretty terrible to use! 😅
Re: the fireplace, be sure it’s in working condition before you use it - a lot of older flats and houses have them but they’re either not really functional (the updraft is too weak) or (despite this being against the law) they haven’t been properly maintained and there are blockages in the chimney. Caveat emptor, as they say!
One other thing: In winter, be sure that there’s no dampness trapped inside the flat because of the newer windows. Older flats and houses were built taking into account that windows and doors were kind of leaking, and, before you know it, there’s mould all over the walls and wardrobes. If necessary, get a de-humidifier!

If you have TV and enjoy movies, there are several free movies channels like Hollywood channel, Fox movies, Axn and so on, the only problem is that the titles are in Portuguese. We, as Portuguese, never dubbed anything, there is subtitles, maybe reading them can help your Portuguese knowledge. Also if you are willing to pay( I am not) there is TV cine that is 4 channels of movies nonstop. Being able to chose to watch any program from the last 7 days makes a really good library of movies

In Lisbon it is prohibit to make noise between 22,00 PM and 08,00AM and on Sundays it is not allowed either to make any sort of loud noise that may disturb other people's rest, most people respect it.
Campo de Ourique is an amazing place to live , you were lucky.

I can see your building is on the busiest street of the neighborhood. Also, Campo de Ourique is right under the airport's take-off/landing route; when the pandemic restrictions end, there will be more than double the planes flying right above you! So yes, it does get a bit noisy. But if you're like me, with the help of earplugs, you'll quickly get used to it. The first weeks there I couldn't sleep because of the planes, but now I just don't hear them anymore.
Hi Nuno! You are right, we didn't realize we were on the busiest street till we moved in. But yes, we are getting used to the noise. Some nights with ear plugs and some times without. :)
Wow, what a great place, lots of space, better equipped than most. The shower thing is unusual but it’s fine for a 2nd bath.
1,300€ was a real bargain - furnished with linens, dishes, etc. it’s the past in such a short period!
That's a classic 40+ year house. The fire place is mostly decorative, it won't heat much of the house. And being an old construction, it doesn't have good noise isolation from the other apartments. It's a good neighborhood.
The kitchen has all the traditional appliances. In recent years, quite a few self service laundry stores have opened, so in winter, it might be better to go there to dry. As for the fridge, guess what we call to the bigger, usually 2 door fridge, 'American fridge' :-D
The shower is really small, never seen one so small.
Didnt think about drying clothes in winter, glad we have a laundry place on our block.

Top floor is definitely a must, after living in Hong Kong for 9 years I am too traumatised to have upstairs neighbours again! 😬😂

@@katiekrackers4210 Go search in Oeiras, great public transport, very green with lots of Parks like Jamor, Monsanto and Poets, great beaches and a little more cheap than inside Lisbon. Very quiet and with lowest crime rate in all region of Lisbon (even Portugal is the 4th safest country in the world).
Note that Oeiras is more close of Lisbon than Cascais. But there is a train that go to Lisbon and Cascais, because is between both places.
Visit and walk in one the most beautiful parks in the region, "Parque dos Poetas" (poets' park), they make lots of free events there, in the international poets day i remember in 2019, they had lots of classic concerts in the outdoor auditorium and a lots of events there and even give you free gifts, all the kids (

15:57 that's old shower integrated with bide. So you have 3 nods at the wall, 1 to regulate the water exit (shower, bide or main tap), the other 2 for cold and warm. The Courtain is also old style but the only thing that works for that crazy shower / bide.
BTW in campo de Ourique, visit the cemitery (has great views and sometimes free classic concerts) 😉 welcome guys! To my city of light, Lisboa (luz boa = good light)

Great to see you settling in. One thing to be careful about is that your bathroom doesn't have windows. You should definitely get a dehumidifier or you are going to end up with mold in winter. What is the energy certification of that place. Love the beautiful Portuguese blue sky and how bright your place is. Wishing you a lot of happiness.

Thanks for the tour of your apartment, I'm guessing that since you guys are in Lisbon, it's pretty pricey! As old fuddy-duddies, we hope to find a pet-friendly rental somewhere outside of the city! And I agree that the shower didn't look right to me either! It's very European to have entire bathrooms that act as a shower w/ a drain in the floor. I've never seen one like you showed us! 👍Thanks for the awesome videos!
Outside of Lisbon your money will go further in a lot of places. We will start exploring those areas now that we are settled.
Thanks for the video tour. I think you have a wonderful place. Lots of character, sunlight, elevator, storage in the ceiling (!!!!) so I wouldn’t mind having a similar place. Two observations: (1) are those radiators below the windows? I haven’’t seen many apartments (via YT videos) w/radiators. I think that’s a 👍🏻. (2) Bathrooms. Since there are no bidets (which are very common in Europe) the owners probably yanked out the bidet form the original large bathroom and created two smaller ones. Since the remaining space was still small--they likely have to improvise w/that 2nd shower. I’ve seen made ‘strange’ bathrooms in Europe so that’s my guess. Enjoy your new apartment!
The apartment has 2 electric radiators in the house and an AC/Heater combo in each room.

It's hard to avoid plane noise in Lisbon with the airport being so central. Better get used to it :). Ask the landlord to install a glass shower guard. Nobody uses curtains anymore. Good luck and enjoy your new adventure.

I enjoyed your apartment tour and the info you provided. I have lived in Lisbon back in 1990, and I was petrified of dropping my clothes as well. Thank goodness, it never happened. As for the noise, you block it out after a while. I am interested in how things look now. Thank for sharing.

i have that type of curtain on a bathtub (also a bit larger) but it's not very normal. i'd suggest talking to the landlord and getting something else installed (like a corner curtain holder) because that doesn't look practical at all.

That shower is more or less normal for very old housing in Lisbon, sad to see that they renovated the bathroom but neglected the shower as they could have at least try to put a normal size shower cabin at the very least, nowadays modern apartments have big shower cabins or bathtubs, in my t4 house I do have 3 full bathrooms and 1 social toilet near the kitchen so you can relate that that situation you have its not present in all Portuguese homes, but in those typical old buildings near the historic center, have some strange layouts and some odd solutions.

Hi, Love your videos!!! Just a heads up. A woman I saw bought a washer-dryer combo( one machine) because it's too cold and damp in the winter to dry your clothes outside. You might look into that. It is a beautiful place, however. I love all the unique accents. Good find. Was it hard to find???
Love your apartment! Nice kitchen and bathrooms (except for that shower-I had one like that in an Airbnb and it just wasn’t usable). I also love the Portuguese tile! And Campo d’ Ourique is fabulous. Such a stylish and hip district which for me equals a fun and happy lifestyle as well as getting good foods at markets. For your tv viewing... can you put a flat screen on the wall directly in front of the sofa? And that beautiful little raised platform next to the fireplace could be for books and deco items to make a nice vista as you walk into the room. Glad you got the cable package, it’ll be great for learning Portuguese. Question...I’m going to need one of those shelf units for my bathroom which can fit over a bidet...where did you find yours?
We are loving the area! So nice to walk a block or two and have so many food options and stores! That shelf was already in the apartment when we arrived.

Love the apartment. How’s the hot water I understand that hot water heaters are small and run out fast like when taking a bath or doing laundry but not at same time. Is this an issue for you? I am a light sleeper too so I know what you mean about that. I am wanting to move over there 2022 from Atlanta. Can’t wait to sell it all and get over there. I too have never visited Portugal yet so want to visit there probably early spring to get a feel of the place. Great vids keep them coming, love the realistic aspect.

Can you buy a clothes drier in Portugal? Why do the landlords not have little "stackables" a small washer/drier stacked together like they do in the states in condos?
We actually have a dryer now and rarely use it. With energy cost high, most people choose to hang dry. The weird thing is the dryers are not the same as in the US and they do not work well. When I have used the dryer, I still have to hang dry for a little while to have the clothes finish drying. May need some more trial and error to get it working well.
Thanks. 1300 euros is expensive, but of course not for Lisbon. Are you planning on buying a year or so later? Also can you walk to the city or do you have to take a train or taxi? I forgot how far it was from the city. Also, if you have trouble sleeping, there are great youtube Ocean Thunderstorm & Stormy Sea Sounds that block out all kinds of noise.
We aren't sure what next year will bring, but will spend this year exploring the country to see what we will do next. Thanks for the recommendation!

We do miss the tortillas and being able to get all our shopping in one spot, the tortillas and the variety of salsas. But I make salsa at home now and we have been able to find enough ingredients for us to get by. There are a few Mexican places that are decent here too.
They should have seiling fans .

Your apartment is beautiful and the price is great. I’m from Texas and I envy the prices I’m seeing. I looked on Flatio for apts. I’ve notice that when you first see a picture of the apt it list a price, for example, 600 euros for 30 days and then when you click on the picture to see the apt the price will pop up to double or more for 30 days. Can you explain that, what am I missing here. I’ve email them twice, they have acknowledge that they have received my email but no answer to my question. Do you know why it’s that way?

How far do you have to lean out the window to hang your clothes? Can you bring the line closer to the window so you're not leaning out 5 stories up?
While you do have to lean out of the building a bit, the fear of dropping the clothes is mostly just that the clothes are heavy when wet and it's kind of awkward to reach out the window to hang something. The lines are connected to the building so I don't think we could move them. But in the fall/winter we will also be purchasing a stand so we'll be able to hang dry in the house, and if that works out better that would be an option year-round too.
Hi, no its not a "normal" shower, its more an aternative shower for a quick shower if someone of the family is using the main one , but for guests is not very pratical lets say.
the neibourhood is old with lots of old houses, the shower is not original we can see, back then the typical Portuguese houses were small in size ( You will soon see that Portugal has a big difference to some other countries, here builders charge a lot for space, its a mentallity/opportunity , everything is small, its changing but at small pace You will see small stores, small plates, small glass, small bottles, small beer glass)
My opinion dont take it in a bad way, its a perpective, I am Portuguese, I know Campo de Ourique is a very good neiboorhood so you pay for it. I know it well I work there everyday, but I live far, I would like to live there if there was a good modern building inside like there are a few but at an affordable and fair price ( now this does not exist yes I know), for my view this are not fair prices, in the last 5/7 years rents are getting crazy, almost no Portuguese can rent at that prices, if you see the houses that you were seeing they will be rentend by foreigners or by not typical Portuguese, I even would say rich Portuguese would have purchased a modern house (renting is sending a lot of money out), for you guys I see you are not in a position to just arrive and buy I know, but has said I am giving my overview, with 1300 I would go more to the Caxias/Oeiras/ Carcavelos / Estoril or Cascais areas, more relaxed ( you have no time table no job to go so plenty of time) and still near the city for making a city life and being near the sea, with just a footstep to the beach has in Carcavelos you can do and a lot of foreigners do, most foreigners schools are there, most of the people that begin to know Portugal choose that areas, and the Portuguese most would like to live on there, its expensive to but you can find more competitive prices there with more modern spaces biguer I mean... I would say the first year u are on the right place...but you will move eventually!!

Nice apto!! Great neighborhood, but be careful with the AC. Energy here is way expensive. This winter I had my heat turned on at night only for about 1 week, my bill was 200€. Learn the trick of using shades and cross ventilation. Also guys when you pin your clothes on the line, you pin your clothes on the bottom line. Ask your landlord how she does it, that way you can fit more clothes to dry outside. As for the bathroom that is really puny, but you find a few of those around. That's for when u just need a quick shower.
Wow, that is expensive. So do you not turn on the heat at all? Another channel said it is not that expensive. Is the alternative the fireplace then? Is there a difference between gas and electric heating? How much are they a month? During my visit in Jan 2020, Lisbon was not cold, and in fact i had to ask the hotel to turn off the heat.
@@trave7644 it is very expensive to have AC/ Heating unit. I have one in each room, except the entry hallway where I have a wall radiator. and as I said, was shocked at how expensive it was. The utility company told me they have seen bills of 800€ from many ignorant of the fact 🇵🇹 has the highest energy costs in the EU. Turn on heat at night only when absolutely necessary, and for an hour or two then shut it down. Avoid top floors. The higher up, the hotter/ colder. Make sure your windows are well installed and are not drafty. Use shades and drapes to control cold and or drafts. Open windows for cross ventilation, keep shades down for coolness. In Winter, once again, at night, b4 going to sleep turn on only if necessary if real cold. This Winter we had a period of about 3 weeks with temps at 25F which is frigid for 🇵🇹. The cheapest option is a fireplace, but not cheap either, and I would pay to have someone come and check the fireplace; the structure and to clean it out, about 100E. Our Winters are milder than in the 🇺🇸 for sure, but with Global warming it's a hit or miss. Use portable heating units for when you need to take a shower in Winter, or if real cold but sparingly as well. They are guzzlers, so don't keep them on all day, only at night. Learn to dress up warmly even at home. Dont walk around in flimsy PJ's, if you dress accordingly at home and have a couple of winter blankets in your bed, you should be fine. I have have gone back to the old fashion water bottle, much cheaper. We have gas only for cooking, but you have to buy the butane gas cans which cost about 25 € per month per can but I don't like to play around with heavy butane cans, so my apt has gas for coocking only piped in the condo already, but not all building are set up for this. Some homes also have wall units for heating, or wall radiators. They are heated by the water heater unit in kitchen but they are also expensive unless used sparingly. Thankfully, our Winters (except for last year) are mild in the South, not so much in Centre and in the North and NW can be real cold, still nothing like in the USA. It is damp and humid, so it gets thru your bones and you sure feel it, but like I said, dress accordingly at home snd limit your usage only if possible at night for an hour or so when reak cold.

@@HoneymoonAlways Don't be, Portugal is not about stress, although I understand your concern, but be very mindful, we do have the highest rates for energy in EU. Thankfully we make it up in other areas. Also, yr energy's co. 's won't send out a tech to do your meter readings every month; at least here where I live (1.30hrs north of LIS) they don't, and neither did they when I lived in Azeitão. You have to either call in your meter readings or send it via the net, but since everything is under your landlords' name, I am not sure If she calls the reading; ask her. If you don't know how to read your meter (I didn't) the co. reps will guide you by phone on how to do it, or your landlord should know. . Make sure those are called in every month b4 the billing close day (Co.will tell u date) otherwise, they will estimate your bill based on last resident 's consumption, then when the tech goes to do the actual reading, and co. will adjust the bill, either up or down depending on your reading numbers. As you start either calling in or registering your monthly numbers on co' s web page (or giving them to ur landlord) the energy co. will revise and adjust monthly amounts based on your now habitual usage, but until then...
Also keep in mind the water, gas are pretty cheap, and internet, phone, cable is very inexpensive compared to US prices, and most Cable packages have CNN, Fox, BBC, AL-Jazeera, and all major European channels, not just 🇵🇹 Tv. That alone is great for your pick up of Portuguese. Believe me, you should learn it as you now live here and it opens up a multitude of avenues you wouldn't otherwise have access to. Portugal is a fab country in sooo many ways, but it's quite different, and many things just may not make sense if u compare it to the US. Keep always an open mind. Don't be afraid and don't shy away from interaction or experiencing the Portuguese way of life. If you need help, your Ytube Portuguese family can always help. There are also a number of Americans or Portuguese American expats living all around you and on Ytube. Lisbon Diaries is one of them. Liz is a Cali born Portuguese, and she and her husband just purchased a home in Palmela, close to Setúbal and she can give you wonderful tips. I am up here around the Santarém area. There are a few more expats in Lisbon, so chk them out. Reach out if you feel you need any type of assistance, but don't stress. Just because things are different here and it's a 'poorer' country economically, it's wealth is great in so many other simple and tangible things, that whatever stresses you may feel during adaptation more than make up for it. Remember, you are now living in Europe, a dream for so many million worldwide. Enjoy the change, the culture, the history, the vibe, difference and travel, not just in-country but all over Europe; Covid allowing. Do I have to move to Italy now? ;) Our Rich Journey couple said they have wall unit heating, but they never spell out these problems in detail. They said heating bills were not that expensive. But hot water bottle, extra paddings of clothing indoors sound like what my sister did in New Zealand. It is that bad there. But I heard in Portugal you can get central heating installed. Is central heating less expensive? If I move to Portugal, i will buy a place, and have one install. I heard it costs about 8k euros? Do you own or rent?

Because a recent study concludes that in Lisbon there must be an earthquake with more than 7 on the Richter scale every 200 years and that there can be one more than 8 on the Richter scale every 2000 years.
Before 1755 (this was the worst since there are records estimated to have reached almost 9 but there are geologists that state that the maximum was only about 8 on the Richter scale). The city was destructed by the fire of all candles people use to have light at that time. And believe me there was no massive or catastrophic one excluded that one in 1755 for more than 1000 years.
There are only a few with more than 6, the biggest 4 in last 1000 years was the one in 1344 (geologists think it reached max 7), the next one was 1531 (maybe he can reach max of 7,5) and the last highest was in 1909 (between from 6,0 to 6,5 in Richter scale).
The japan one in 2011 was more than 9 in Richter scale.
