U guys are in a great neigbhorhood and close to other good ones, like Estrela and São Bento. Lisbon is such a livable place and great to raise children! I was born and grew up in Lisbon, spent many, many wekends at Estrela Parque as my sister's godparents lived in Calçada da Estrela. Wonderful childhood and great city, especially in the early 70's. Hopefully one day you will have little new family feet to enjoy Portugal with, in the meantime, enjoy, and don't be afraid to branch out. Lisbon is a case of photo competing with the frame, and IMO, the frame wins! Amazing historic beautiful towns EVERYWHERE! Some to chk out and easy to get to: Mafra, Coimbra, Sintra, Tomar, Evora, Cascais, Setúbal for Tróia beaches (amazing..) Aveiro, etc😘🤗🙏❤️🇵🇹
@@HoneymoonAlways Great, Setúbal is interesting. Gritty, blue color town, but Tróia the strip of land in the middle of the ocean... OMG, it is stunning! You can take a ferry from the jetty right b4 the main park, and you can be there in no time. You can just spend some time at the stunning beaches. The resort there is expensive but the island is free. We have rented an apartment less than a mile south of you, right next to the Park of Necessidades, which is south of the cemetery. Be patient with all the teenagers there (Tapada das Necessidades) at some times that's load of them in that park (2 the biggest high school in Lisbon are in that zone) one the biggest public highschool call Josefa Óbidos and the most famous and private Portuguese school call Salesianos de Lisboa. Sometimes the teenagers go there to make out or to playing soccer.
The Metro is coming to Estrela - it’s the construction project adjacent to (just south of) Jardim da Estrela. I think it’ll be done early 2023…. We also go to the Auchan supermarket in Amoreiras - for us it’s a 20-25 minute walk. It’s the only market I’ve found that sells craft beers, not to mention the great selection of produce and everything else. We’ve enjoyed eating in the Mercado, but are avoiding it until the pandemic calms down. Love to hear some restaurant recommendations in your neighborhood. Bob in Lapa

I love Ourique! I stayed there in Oct 2019 and it’s my favorite Lisbon neighborhood so far. I completely agree with all your reasons for moving there. I LOVED that market! The seafood grill, Hummus Bar’s falafel (their other location is in Budapest, where I’ve also been), and wine bar were great. I loved the parks, the flat walk-ability, casual multigenerational locals, and few tourists. I even had dental work done there at Affordable Dental opposite the park - highly recommended. There’s a great wood fire pizza place on a corner as good as in Italy and quite cheap. The groceries are convenient and I went to the natural grocery store quite a lot for vegan products, which they had a lot of. It was like a mini Whole Foods. I first arrived there by taxi without a car. I liked the neighborhood so much, I returned several weeks later with a car. Street parking wasn’t bad, though I may have been lucky. @@HoneymoonAlways in older times it was one of the most readily available sources of protein accessible to the general population. It was conserved with salt before refrigeration. The taste stayed so you can find salted dried cod everywhere and we have at least a hundred recipes for it. A lot of traditional dishes use cod. That said there are plenty of other traditional dishes without cod, so there's a lot else to try if cod is not something you like.

Welcome to Campo de Ourique! You are my neighbors now! I've been living in Campo de Ourique for almost 10 years and I just love it. Very lively and charming. So many restaurants that I just love (If you like sushi, try Hikidashi...one of my favorites!). If you need any help, feel free to ask. A fabulous neighbourhood to live in Lisbon is Benfica. Fresh produce market, transportation, good and affordable restaurants and coffe shops, traditional commerce, parks, etc. Besides being within walking distance of the Colombo Mall and, of course also from the Monsanto forest for walks and sports.
Been to Lisbon in 2018 and loved it. Visited El Corte Ingles,beautiful shopping mall. Worth visiting also is COLOMBO Shopping Centre. I was amazed at how cheap their bottled wines were and the huge offerings of Cod Fish ( BACALHAU). I wish you both lots of happiness in your new country.
Next to El Corte Inglês you have a wonderful museum and park called Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, it's beautiful and a great place to both chill out and visit pretty cool exhibitions
It’s good to know you’re settling in just fine! Fun fact: I was the pest keeping you guys from getting into the grocery store to pay for your box of cherries! 😅 If you’re into Japanese food, you should try out a place called Hikidashi. Or if you want to have a go at some solidly staunch traditional Portuguese cuisine, O Magano is your go-to place in Campo de Ourique. Both are fairly priced and within walking distance. Enjoy!
For grocery stores / supermarkets, there's 2 kinds. The ones owned by a big company, like Auchan or Pingo Doce or other, where they have big store in malls and smaller stores in all other places. And then you have your local typical store, most of time the owner is the person that is serving you. With it, there's 2 major differences, prices (cheaper on owned by big company) and how you are treated ( better customer treatment on local owned store ). Also, on some of those local stores, some products may have better quality. Car parking is expensive for non residents. Residents are eligible for car park, it's a super affordable annual fee, but its a tough are to find a car place, as most buildings don't have a garage.
Small grocery stores have the best quality local fruits. Supermarket companies always deal with other big producers from Europe, mainly Spanish big industrial producers of cheap tasteless vegetables created in huge greenhouses.
I move to CDO four weeks ago and I live on the eastern side which used to be Santa Isabel. The grilled chicken place is five minutes walk from me towards the west; Rato metro is just a few minutes walk from me towards the east. I chose the eastern part for less plane noise , and closer to the metro . So I don’t know if it’s fair to say that CDO is not metro accessible , it depends on which part of CDO. For me CDO is great for families because of the abundance of preschools
You probably would like to know that the city's metro is going to be expanded to Campo de Ourique, but will only be operational in about 3 to 4 years, until then I guess you can count with the bus system...

You two would probably like the plethora of vintage book shops in Lisbon. Check out Bertrand as well in Chiado...oldest bookstore in continuous operation according to Guinness...mid 1700s.

Principe Real is next to Campo de Ourique so it is very close. It seems like a great neighborhood, just a little more hilly. It is also closer to the city center so I think it’s a good choice.
Omg! I literally work nearby there campo de orique! Mercado and near vegan nata restaurant my favorite spot and also in front of that church has amazing Portuguese restaurants. Wine hunters we always go there me and myself boyfriend! So true there’s so many good things and nice to live in campo de orique. I wish I can live there too and but mt boyfriend live here in odivelas.
Regarding transportation, the metro's Red Line is being expanded south to Alcântara, with one stop being in Campo de Ourique, so in 2026 you'll be better connected to the rest of the city😁 Also if you live close to Estrela, from 2024 onwards you'll have another new metro station (circular line).
This is a neighborhood that has come into my awareness. It's nice. I was wondering if you can get around well enough with English. I'm researching different places for retirement because I want to leave the US. Portugal looks like a great alternative, but I don't yet speak Portuguese. I'm trying to learn.

Really love watching your channel. My partner and I are thinking about trying Portugal and I am soaking up as much info as I can possibly get. I know you are in Lisbon and just getting acclimated to the area as a resident, but when you start venturing out to other parts of the country, I look forward to watching your experience. @@marthapimentel2815 that is about our window too. Going to visit (for the first time) in April of 2022. Then try living there for two or three months in 2023 in hopes of making the move in 2024. That is, if everything goes well with the visits. Crazy to think about actually moving somewhere you have never been (I totally admire Dan and Michelle), but Portugal sounds great and it tics a lot of boxes.
@@suzannebaugh8206 it definitely ticked ours too. We are actually thinking of going without a visit. We have two cairns terriers who we don’t like to leave too often. I’ve been following several folks from US who have made the leap and are loving it.

Since yall don't have a car, do you bring portable carts to the grocery store to help carry your goods home? This also applies when you are buying home goods (ie. The plants) or shopping for clothes etc... Are you just getting an Uber to help bring those things home? Definitely would like to know especially since I'm from the US and as yall know it's very car centric here 🙂

Hi!! We’re using an iPhone 12 to film, a ring light from Amazon (but mostly we focus on having lots of good natural light), and a unidirectional movo mic. We have gotten feedback that our sound isn’t good so I wouldn’t take our lead on that one, though I suspect the core issue is that we’re in a super echoey room with not enough sound padding. We edit in iMovie ☺️☺️ send us some bbq please😉
@@HoneymoonAlways maybe once i move on to the making my own jerky stage I can send some. Portuguese BBQ is phenomenal though so you're probably going to be fine bbq wise. So nice to see another iPhone user. I'm using my 11 pro for filming. I've been all over the map in terms of what mic I'm using. For a while I was doing no live voiceover and then studio recording all my voice... but that was taking hours of extra work and the videos felt "less authentic." I've tried a lavalier mic and hated how it sounded and just picked up a Movo VXR10... but I'm not sure I'm sold on it. Any chance that's the same mic you're using? Echo has been my biggest annoyance with it though with videos filmed in my kitchen I'm batting against the odds to not have echo.
Dan, you should try Padel Tennis (not to be confused with paddle tennis). I don't think it's very popular in the US yet, but it has blown up here in Portugal. It's even more fun than tennis and it's also a very social sport.
Oi Vasco, yes I agree Padel is sooo much fun and social. I'm originally from Italy and there it has gained a lot of popularity too, like in Portugal and in Spain. On Saturday I will be playing another padel game, can't wait!
I think it’s called pickleball here in the US and it’s HUGELY popular in our small wine country town with retirees. My neighbors always sound happy playing.
I'm not a fan of Colombo Mall because of the donut layout. Amoreiras Mall is easier to get around. Vasco da Gama Mall in the Parque das Nações area is also pretty nice but that's in East end of the city

@@tamaramadelin4831 When you are a resident you need to go to the local park authority (EMEL for Lisbon) and ask for "Dístico de Residente" (Portuguese), for the first car is free, the second car cost is 54€/year and the 3rd car is 132€/year. You need to receive this "Dístico de Residente" to park for free in your local area without pay parking. In Saldanha for parking the cost is 2€/hour
@@HoneymoonAlways it is the yellow petit pan that bears their name. When you get used to this supermarket you will find pretty decent things for affordable prices. And it is found in every corner.

Did you guys talk to a tax accountant before moving? I am interested in what information you received about earning income from the US while living in Portugal in the D7 visa.... We always thought we would go to Lisbon based on our research. We wanted a bigger city with easy access to the rest of Portugal and Europe and access to anything else we would need. Once we got here we knew it would be what we needed. We are still open to moving somewhere else later after we get to know Portugal better.

@@Goodlifexplorers we had two different opinions, but what makes the most sense to us and what we are going to do is pay taxes in the US like normal and then file taxes here, which will take into account what we already paid in the US, which should leave us without anything due with NHR maxing out taxes at 20%.
If you want to save money on public transport in Lisbon, I recommend the Navegante Família transport card has the same features as the NAVEGANTE passes (Metropolitano or Municipal) and allows each family to pay the maximum price of 2 NAVEGANTE passes. Navegante Metropolitano Família - 80 euro. Navegante Municipal Família - 60 euro. Navegante Família is for the exclusive use of household members (at least 3 members), with the same tax address - which shall be located within one of the 18 municipalities of the metropolitan area of Lisbon - and is valid monthly, that is, from the first to the last day of the month for which it was purchased. All procedures regarding Navegante Família shall be processed at the service stations of the regular public passenger transport service operators.
Tram, not trolley. A trolley has a different meaning ...also, you guys are not far off from the parliament building.. The military hospital is right next to the park.. And some hidden gems further down .

Yes! We especially love that when we run out of things we just to to the store real quick, and it’s closer than it was to get the mail at our old house. And no Spencer’s Gift, I don’t know where all the youths go 🤷

lol ... grandparent age people, oh that's so sweet, well I guess I still think of your age group as kids - and as your non parents I need to ask - do you have a plan for wealth building. It's important to do at your age...the choices of today, shape the future of tomorrow. For example I will use my cousin and myself...to compare apple to apple. Financially she started off better than I did...she chose to be a renter, live a party life style and express her creativity. I chose to be homeowner, and like a turtle climbed the property ladder as best as I could. Choosing the best neighbourhoods that I could afford. Fast forward to today - she's living in a motel (after burning bridges with everyone who tries to help) and my real estate portfolio allowed me to retire early. She's trying to figure her life out and I'm busy building a new dream. I'm so happy that I chose to build wealth when I was young and be a playful grandparent than play while I was young and need to find a job at 50.
I guess grandparent age could be quite the age range! As far as wealth building, we both worked and owned our home before this adventure and did pretty well saving Right now our main focus is building our business up but I always have other ideas in the back of my mind about building wealth.
@@HoneymoonAlways :) building your business IS wealth building. I have other friends who chose the stock market or bitcoin instead of real estate and they are kicking my butt in portfolio. so there's lots of ways to build a great future and still enjoy your present :)
Campo de Ourique is a nice neighborhood, lived there for a couple years. @@HoneymoonAlways in older times it was one of the most readily available sources of protein accessible to the general population. It was conserved with salt before refrigeration. The taste stayed so you can find salted dried cod everywhere and we have at least a hundred recipes for it. A lot of traditional dishes use cod. That said there are plenty of other traditional dishes without cod, so there's a lot else to try if cod is not something you like.

In Odivelas the municipal pool cost only 25€/month (need to live in that county).
A fabulous neighbourhood to live in Lisbon is Benfica. Fresh produce market, transportation, good and affordable restaurants and coffe shops, traditional commerce, parks, etc.
Besides being within walking distance of the Colombo Mall and, of course also from the Monsanto forest for walks and sports.

Been to Lisbon in 2018 and loved it. Visited El Corte Ingles,beautiful shopping mall.
Worth visiting also is COLOMBO Shopping Centre. I was amazed at how cheap their bottled wines were and the huge offerings of Cod Fish ( BACALHAU).

If you’re into Japanese food, you should try out a place called Hikidashi. Or if you want to have a go at some solidly staunch traditional Portuguese cuisine, O Magano is your go-to place in Campo de Ourique. Both are fairly priced and within walking distance. Enjoy!

For grocery stores / supermarkets, there's 2 kinds. The ones owned by a big company, like Auchan or Pingo Doce or other, where they have big store in malls and smaller stores in all other places. And then you have your local typical store, most of time the owner is the person that is serving you. With it, there's 2 major differences, prices (cheaper on owned by big company) and how you are treated ( better customer treatment on local owned store ). Also, on some of those local stores, some products may have better quality.
Car parking is expensive for non residents. Residents are eligible for car park, it's a super affordable annual fee, but its a tough are to find a car place, as most buildings don't have a garage.
That makes sense about the grocery stores, we are going to try a few more smaller ones in the area.
I would love to see more videos on your reviews of restaurants in the area. when we travel there in 2022 it would love to try some that are top rated.
Small grocery stores have the best quality local fruits. Supermarket companies always deal with other big producers from Europe, mainly Spanish big industrial producers of cheap tasteless vegetables created in huge greenhouses.
I move to CDO four weeks ago and I live on the eastern side which used to be Santa Isabel. The grilled chicken place is five minutes walk from me towards the west; Rato metro is just a few minutes walk from me towards the east. I chose the eastern part for less plane noise , and closer to the metro . So I don’t know if it’s fair to say that CDO is not metro accessible , it depends on which part of CDO. For me CDO is great for families because of the abundance of preschools

Principe Real is next to Campo de Ourique so it is very close. It seems like a great neighborhood, just a little more hilly. It is also closer to the city center so I think it’s a good choice.

Omg! I literally work nearby there campo de orique! Mercado and near vegan nata restaurant my favorite spot and also in front of that church has amazing Portuguese restaurants. Wine hunters we always go there me and myself boyfriend!

Regarding transportation, the metro's Red Line is being expanded south to Alcântara, with one stop being in Campo de Ourique, so in 2026 you'll be better connected to the rest of the city😁
Also if you live close to Estrela, from 2024 onwards you'll have another new metro station (circular line).
This is a neighborhood that has come into my awareness. It's nice. I was wondering if you can get around well enough with English. I do not think it matters. We have our DEF appointment in August and will do a video about that.

@@marthapimentel2815 that is about our window too. Going to visit (for the first time) in April of 2022. Then try living there for two or three months in 2023 in hopes of making the move in 2024. That is, if everything goes well with the visits. Crazy to think about actually moving somewhere you have never been (I totally admire Dan and Michelle), but Portugal sounds great and it tics a lot of boxes.
@@suzannebaugh8206 it definitely ticked ours too. We are actually thinking of going without a visit. We have two cairns terriers who we don’t like to leave too often. I’ve been following several folks from US who have made the leap and are loving it.

We've actually just gone with whatever was the cheapest. That has been Budget or Hertz. Right now the prices are pretty crazy though.
In Europe, cities are made for people, its normal to walk, and you can use public transport for longer distances. In some places cars aren't allowed.
We love that everything is so close! In the In the same distance I would walk to get the mail in the US, I can get almost anything I need here.
I would love to live in this neighborhood ,it used to be more affordable to live there.
Since yall don't have a car, do you bring portable carts to the grocery store to help carry your goods home? This also applies when you are buying home goods (ie. The plants) or shopping for clothes etc... Are you just getting an Uber to help bring those things home? Hi!! We’re using an iPhone 12 to film, a ring light from Amazon (but mostly we focus on having lots of good natural light), and a unidirectional movo mic. We have gotten feedback that our sound isn’t good so I wouldn’t take our lead on that one, though I suspect the core issue is that we’re in a super echoey room with not enough sound padding. We edit in iMovie ☺️☺️ send us some bbq please😉

So nice to see another iPhone user. I'm using my 11 pro for filming. I've been all over the map in terms of what mic I'm using. For a while I was doing no live voiceover and then studio recording all my voice... but that was taking hours of extra work and the videos felt "less authentic." I've tried a lavalier mic and hated how it sounded and just picked up a Movo VXR10... but I'm not sure I'm sold on it. Any chance that's the same mic you're using? Echo has been my biggest annoyance with it though with videos filmed in my kitchen I'm batting against the odds to not have echo.
Dan, you should try Padel Tennis (not to be confused with paddle tennis). I don't think it's very popular in the US yet, but it has blown up here in Portugal. It's even more fun than tennis and it's also a very social sport.

Oi Vasco, yes I agree Padel is sooo much fun and social. I'm originally from Italy and there it has gained a lot of popularity too, like in Portugal and in Spain. On Saturday I will be playing another padel game, can't wait!
I think it’s called pickleball here in the US and it’s HUGELY popular in our small wine country town with retirees. My neighbors always sound happy playing.

@@tamaramadelin4831 When you are a resident you need to go to the local park authority (EMEL for Lisbon) and ask for "Dístico de Residente" (Portuguese), for the first car is free, the second car cost is 54€/year and the 3rd car is 132€/year. You need to receive this "Dístico de Residente" to park for free in your local area
without pay parking. In Saldanha for parking the cost is 2€/hour

That is one of the neighborhoods we are looking into. That market is a big draw! What other parts of Portugal did you travel to before choosing Lisbon? Did you guys talk to a tax accountant before moving? I am interested in what information you received about earning income from the US while living in Portugal in the D7 visa.... If you could share that would be great! Local joints LOL! The gyms are more like sports clubs right?
We always thought we would go to Lisbon based on our research. We wanted a bigger city with easy access to the rest of Portugal and Europe and access to anything else we would need. Once we got here we knew it would be what we needed. We are still open to moving somewhere else later after we get to know Portugal better.
For taxes we did speak to 2 different accountants and researched a lot.

@@Goodlifexplorers we had two different opinions, but what makes the most sense to us and what we are going to do is pay taxes in the US like normal and then file taxes here, which will take into account what we already paid in the US, which should leave us without anything due with NHR maxing out taxes at 20%.
If you want to save money on public transport in Lisbon, I recommend the Navegante Família transport card has the same features as the NAVEGANTE passes (Metropolitano or Municipal) and allows each family to pay the maximum price of 2 NAVEGANTE passes. Navegante Metropolitano Família - 80 euro. Navegante Municipal Família - 60 euro.
Navegante Família is for the exclusive use of household members (at least 3 members), with the same tax address - which shall be located within one of the 18 municipalities of the metropolitan area of Lisbon - and is valid monthly, that is, from the first to the last day of the month for which it was purchased.
All procedures regarding Navegante Família shall be processed at the service stations of the regular public passenger transport service operators.

Isn't the D7 Visa for retirees and the D2 for self employed or remotely employed?
D7 is for both. I think D2 is if you will be employed by a Portuguese company, but not sure.
A person CAN work and do business in Portugal with a D7 visa. It is allowed.

lol ... grandparent age people, oh that's so sweet, well I guess I still think of your age group as kids - and as your non parents I need to ask - do you have a plan for wealth building. It's important to do at your age...the choices of today, shape the future of tomorrow. For example I will use my cousin and myself...to compare apple to apple. Financially she started off better than I did...she chose to be a renter, live a party life style and express her creativity. I chose to be homeowner, and like a turtle climbed the property ladder as best as I could. Choosing the best neighbourhoods that I could afford. Fast forward to today - she's living in a motel (after burning bridges with everyone who tries to help) and my real estate portfolio allowed me to retire early. She's trying to figure her life out and I'm busy building a new dream. I'm so happy that I chose to build wealth when I was young and be a playful grandparent than play while I was young and need to find a job at 50.
I guess grandparent age could be quite the age range! As far as wealth building, we both worked and owned our home before this adventure and did pretty well saving Right now our main focus is building our business up but I always have other ideas in the back of my mind about building wealth.

Campo de Ourique is a nice neighborhood, lived there for a couple years.
If you like sea food try Furia do Mar, i also sugest Churrasqueira Frango na Brasa, they make one of the best roast chicken (Portuguese style) in Lisbon, you can just go there pick it up and take it home, great when you don't feel like cooking, it's also cheap (if you like it spicy, ask for the piri piri sauce)
