      I'd really like to learn more about the mechanics of the Non-Habitual Tax Regime (e.g., what office to sign up, paperwork, deadlines) - assuming you're both going down that route. My understanding is sign up must be done soon after arriving in PT. Thanks.

    I'd just like to had that most COUPLES are working with values around your rent for the appartment (~1500€), and people really do live of these amounts, even with children.
    Your lifestyle is VERY comfortable, and very close to the top percentile of the Portuguese reality.
    I really like you both, and you come from a different reality, but you kind of need a reality check.... People around you (even in your neighbourhood) are probably spending close to everything they earn to live there, at least that's the reality of most of the people I know.
    In Portugal most people work to survive, its really hard to save money, and a great deal of people can't put aside money (as in actually 0€). We have quality of life but we are always fearing the next day, and what it may bring (specially in the current COVID situation).
    When people told you that you would have a "kings" lifestyle with 4000€, they were not lying, but they were comparing to the PORTUGUESE reality. I'd live like a king with that budget but, as with everything, It depends on the person using the money.
    Great video, and thanks for sharing :)

      Hi Ivo, thanks for your comment! We understand that compared to most Portuguese residence we live a very comfortable lifestyle, the comment about living like kings is more directed at other foreigners considering moving. A lot of people talk as if you can move to Portugal and everything is going to be super cheap and you can live in a super lux apartment for very little. We just want to make it clear for other people looking to move that it is not the case.

    • @Hdio99
      @Hdio99 Před 2 lety +9

      well with 4000€ for 2 I can say you would not live like kings...but I know what you mean , I am Portuguese have 50 years old and am like middle class but having some difficulties here and there, I live well with 2500€ for me my wife and dauther, lower than 2000€ for a family of 3 considering that we are paying house and car would became survival for us.
      just a term of comparasing

      There is another CZcams couple (our rich journey) living in Portugal and they left Lisbon because it was to expensive. I also found a channel that mentioned other areas other than Lisbon because that’s the most expensive place to live. Other places were of course further out of the way. This couple is definitely living the good life over there. What is I giving to most people is living considerably cheaper than the US in a nice, livable apartment and live nicely on a lower budget. And by nice I just mean not check to check or struggling like you might have been in the U.S. most Americans will live in Lisbon probably because its nicer and feels more touristy and safer.

    One thing worth mentioning is the differences between Lisbon, or even Porto vs other places around the country which are much cheaper.
    Minimum monthly sallary in Portugal is about 700€ a month, average sallary is probably around 1200€. It is possible but of course each family has diferent standards of living and needs. But yeah, you guys definitely live in one of the most expensive spots in the country.
    1300€ for rent feels really high btw, I assume you're living right in downtown Lisbon, hence the cost but you could consider moving somewhere else once you get an good grasp of the area. For that money, you can easily rent a multiple bedroom house with a gigantic yard or land in many areas of Portugal, and I don't necessarily mean rural areas, even in outskirts of Lisbon like Caldas da Rainha, or somewhere along the silver coast like around Leiria.
    Thanks for sharing too, I haven't lived in Portugal for more than 10 years now, it seems to have gotten a bit more expensive since then, but nothing crazy if you compare it to other American cities.
    Thanks for the video, I'm always interested in living costs values. Do you guys use any app to track your expenses? Something like mint? (I don't think mint works over there tho)

    All I can say is that I feel so lucky...I cannot even relate to your expenses partly because I lived in France and could still live in a castle on 4 hectares for less and I have just learned how to cut costs over time and never want for anything!! I always feel out of touch in these vlogs because I have 13 years of experience navigating life in a very expensive country...For me Lisbon is cheaper and nothing surprises me! We live near Campo d'Orique and have a huge terrace but 1 less bedroom...Half the price! Our utilities are less than 100/mo but our 4 phones are with Free in France and medical there is nearly free...35€/mo! We go out all the time so for 1,50 per day (40€ viva card) we go all over Lisbon when and where we want...To dinner across the river or just to see the sunset! We love our neighborhood, but venture out to discover all of Lisbon and we surely could not do that on 64€!! We still walk a lot, just don't always stay close to home! In order to cut costs eating out we go where the locals go...Better food and way cheaper!! I think you will do better next month, but your reality is not the reality of most Portuguese...

    • @katiekrackers4210
      @katiekrackers4210 Před 2 lety

      But 40 euro is just one viva per person though? So it's 80 eu a month for a couple and they spent less than that at 64.
      How lucky you get to have medical and phone expenses elsewhere in Europe! That's great for you, but harder for us non europeans.

    • @tamaramadelin4831
      @tamaramadelin4831 Před 2 lety

      I agree and that's why I said I always feel lucky!! Our move to Lisbon sure was made easy due to already being a citizen and resident! My point about the viva card was that for us it's so worth it because we would spend way more than 64€ because we go out all the time and not just within walking distance! With the card we go wherever and don't worry how many times we get on and off public transportation...At 1,50 each time it would surely add up!!

    I am so thankful that you guys post the more realistic and down-to-earth advice about moving to Lisbon compared to some on YT! Kudos! I was beginning to wonder about this "super-cheap" portrait of moving to Lisbon that I'd heard about again and again--especially when I started my own research. For example, the rent prices I researched are NOT super-cheap, and I wondered why so many were posting about living in Portugal as being the go-to, super-cheap, "you can live here for practically nothing" lifestyle as a generalized portrait. This video you posted here was a welcome reality check, and I can't thank you enough for calling out some of the exaggeration out there. What you described in this video I would consider a typical, average American middle-class lifestyle, and it is what many perspective ex-pats would be wondering about if they were to move abroad. And I loved the fact that you pointed out that you both have made adjustments to your lifestyles as you have settled in as new Europeans. Yeah, it's going to be different, of course, and one must embrace that change---that's part of the reason to be an ex-pat!!

We spent 1,200 USD on those items, going to recommended restaurants from FB expats groups, and just being out and about all day we got hungry so we would eat out.a lot...
    We found out the same thing: before going for the trip we had budgeted $2000 a month for both of us (based on watching youtube) but after coming back and knowing how much apartments cost + food + insurance etc etc - we adjusted to $3500-$3700!
    I really believe many ppl on youtube try to romanticize the costs abroad... for us to live comfortable we would need more than $2000!!!

But of course this for two persons. But totally get it that it is tempting to eat out. And of course, the expenses would be lower for someone who is retired and can afford a house without a mortgage. Hi Loquita. I'm also focused on the dryer issue. Having lived in Italy I can say dryers are not too "common." However, based on other YT videos on PT, looks like the answer concerning dryers is a mixed bag. Specifically: (1) Hang it out the window, (2) Some apartments have a combo washer/dryer unit (either in the kitchen or bathroom). I understand these combo units work "well." Trick here is the exhaust vent. I hear some combo units don't require an exhaust vent. Personally, I don't get how that would work. Maybe someone else knows about that. (3) On Algarve videos some supermarkets have a stand-alone shed with washer/dryer units in the parking lot. I wouldn't think this option exists in Lisbon per se but that's only a guess on my part. This option may exist elsewhere in PT--not sure. Hope this helps a little since the dryer issue was high on my list as well. Cheers.

I can't imagine living without a dryer in my home, (although I did exactly that in Argentina in the mid 90's) I'm so excited about moving to Portugal that we are donating, selling, or handing down to grandkids approximately 95% of everything we own. It's scary and intimidating, but fortunately not the first time that we've moved overseas. We hope to buy a home w/ a garden in the Northern part of Portugal, so heating will be a must, while AC is something we'll have to check into. (We haven't needed AC for the past 5 years because we live at 9K elevation and it's always chilly at night) In fact, we had our first frost last week!

    The differences that I’ve seen in other people’s videos tend to rest in the location: typically those narratives are - Lisbon is relatively expensive (compared to the rest of the country) and if you want to spend €2K a month, you need to live in a smaller town, probably away from the coast. You mentioned a budget of US$4000/mo. but I would encourage you to try for US$3000/mo. and put at least 25% of your budget towards creating a cushion. Hi Maria, we appreciate the comment. It’s a complicated situation and we understand that not everyone wins. We know the government is incentivizing people to immigrate and we are taking advantage of that opportunity. We hope our spending which we know is more than the average citizen will help the country economically to make it worth any negative effects. It is interesting that the rules for golden visas and taxes on pensions for the nhs system are changing. I bet they will continue to change until they are completely phased out.

      @@HoneymoonAlways you are completely right in taking advantage of our "socialist" government and their unfair, blinked, short term measures. I'm not judging you or any of the people who are lucky enough to have this opportunity. Just commented to alert that foreigners are not coming to Portugal because of its beauty, culture and the Portuguese. They come because it's cheaper and on top of that they have fiscal advantages. Again good luck and happy stay in lovely Lisboa.

      @@MariaSantos-rv5kh I only will correct one thing in that we 100% came to Portugal for its beauty, culture, climate. We could have gone to other places, but it is the easy to achieve visa, cost of living, and NHR tax scheme that made it possible. And when our 10 years on the tax scheme runs out, a change in the tax scheme won't cause us to leave because of how wonderful this county is.

      @@HoneymoonAlways I will have to agree with Maria. Foreigners come here mainly for the tax benefits. If you were forced to pay 40% of your wage in taxes, you would not be here, as simple as that.
      It's so ridiculous that as NHR you only pay 20%, which is less than a citizen in its own country. Does that make sense to you?

      @Lorraine Clark Hi Lorraine, the NHR is still available. They now tax retirement funds at 10% so maybe that is what she was referring to. There are also changes to the golden Visa, so that might be what they mean as well. With pre-existing conditions, private health insurance will likely not cover them but they are always covered by public health care.

    Hi Guys! Thanks for sharing. Any “first month,” “version 1 software,” “first grand opening,” etc. will not be representative as you know. So appreciate the honesty. BTW-you mentioned the possibility of getting a Vespa. YEEEES! So far, you’re the only YT’bers that I know that’s even considering it. Thinking about it myself vs. purchasing a car-which I’d rather avoid. Decision will depend on where we’ll live, transit options, distance to grocery store, etc. If you get one 👍🏻 🛵 👍🏻 I’d be VERY interested in knowing if a license is required and the rigamarole around that. Here in California, a license is required based on the motor size. No idea what rules in PT might be since rarely (if ever) mentioned on YT. Good luck and looking forward to future videos. 🇮🇹
