‘Hold On’ is literally a Freaking MASTERPIECE‼️ Anyone who is a gen-x or a millennial even, who was old enough to remember the 1st time hearing this classic nostalgic song & how it made you feel! It made you feel better about situations (too mny) you were going through. Even silly ones like at 12yrs old when you think your life is over. Oh I’d give anything to go back to a normal world in the 90’s! It was so beautiful to have experienced it! If you know you know. Thx for sharing this.✌🏼

Hold on is a miracle song it helped many people through very dark and rough times. I am so grateful this song was written. Bit sad it was labelled as a wedding movie song later most of the teenagers of that generation will remember how the song got us through the tough days.

I still have their first album and I bought it for the song "Release me" which was initially my favorite song by them. But after listening to the album for a while my favorite became a song I initially didn't like; "Eyes like twins". I'm surprised you didn't mention this song (perhaps it didn't do well enough on the charts for you to do so). I think I didn't like it at first because of the opening but after listening to the whole song a few times I really started to like the latter parts. And a few years ago I heard a story about them you didn't mention. One of the women gained a lot of weight (as we can see in the video) and she went for weight loss surgery. This was just before one of their concerts and she was unable to go because she was still recovering from the surgery. Yet she hadn't told the other two women in the group she planned to have the surgery. Incidentally I'm glad you mentioned the Spice Girls. Initially I completely ignored them; I thought it was a band only little girls would like. But when their first concert in Istanbul was televised out of curiousity I recorded and watched it and I was shocked; I actually liked a lot of their songs and they became my favorite group. I should also mention a girl group you didn't refer to in which they actually played their own instruments; the Go-Go's. But perhaps the band is a bit too far in the past for you to bring it up.

OMG, producers saying 'Hold On' is corny and it won't go anywhere. PER-LEEASSEE, that's ALL America usually makes. The ghastly likes of Starship (Starsh*t more like), noisy embarrassments of Bon Jovi, bubblegum tripe of slagdonna the vile, disgusting weepy soppy burblings of Pariah Carey, Celine Dion, even Whitney Houston. Tina Turner does the same kind of stuff to a fake rock score that does not disguise its desperate shortcomings, America went crazy over that diabolical "Dirty Dancing soundtrack", they love soppy Diana Ross records, the bloody old 'Lift Goes Up Where We Belong'-the list goes on! Pure hypocrisy.
In fact, I was excited to know 'Hold On' wasn't about love, but coming off drugs. How is THAT corny? All the above is corny and then some-usually awful. The fact that it debuted at No.74 is a big deal, that is one big chart! I don't get how this comment then goes quiet once it hits the top spot. So clearly, if they were right about it corny, it IS clear that the US loves corny (well I've just proved that, surely). Ironically, the last 2 singles taken off the debut album ARE corny, even soppy; the last being a truly bad choice for single over far better on the album), but apparently once you're established, it's okay to BE corny then! Proving record labels are as clueless as they've always been. Now the 2nd album, despite being described as more personal, even bleak, comes off as more sentimental, soppy, self-indulgent and an air of trying too hard, Plus no one has any idea of what to release of it, with 'Give It Up' being the only noteworthy single, all the other best ones stuck on the disc. It's as if they tried too hard to be personal and get it across (with a trowel), that any idea of commercial choices with kick or lushness: 'It's Only Life', 'Don't Take Me Down', 'Where Are You' and 'This Doesn't Have To Be Love'-totally went by them all! Oh well. For 3 years in the 90s, they mattered. And unlike all others, they harmonise together so beautifully, a rare gift too often accepted as easily done-don't be stupid!

Crap names are thrown out, they don't count. While Bangles are obviously a band (unlike virtually every female group out there) and if the girl group ever connects to them, then Bangles are clearly Best Girl Group Ever, even if they had competition, which they ever did. This aside, Wilson Phillips were there one worst enemy alongside their management. While the 1st 3 singles were great choices, with, in my view, 'Release Me' being the best of the lot, and the album's best song, the 4th (which actually IS corny, never mind the 5th dreadful choice) wasn't. Sure it was a big hit, maybe cos it focused on Chynna again (always though her name was said 'Cheen-a'?), as did the bloody last one, but 'Over And Over', 'A Reason To Believe' (something who can actually sing doing it this time) and 'Next To You (Someday I'll Be)' are better choices, and 'Eyes Like Twins' is catchy, but points again at their tendency to get cheesy and sentimental, which really flares up on the 2nd album. And that album really killed them.
While it's technically a good enough record, "Shadows And Light", unlike the Bangles' 2nd album, did not improve on their 1st (of course to be fair Bangles debut was even better than WP's, and did them a big favour by disbanding the year they appeared). Unlike the debut, with had the blazing 'Hold On' to start the career afire, they choice a rather limp, soppy ballad complete with awful cheesy daytime soap Sax interlude in the middle, and were bloody lucky that single got to where it did. The 2nd choice was much better, with Wendy on vocals, but the final single was an actually hurler of a choice, even worse than 'Dream Still Alive' 2 years back. Basically the best things on the 2nd album were almost all the liveliest ones. Ignoring the rather embarrassing 'Fuelled For Houston', this album's highest points were the electric 'It's Only Life' (THAT should have come off 1st!!), 'Give It Up' (the only single they got right), 'Don't Take Me Down' (another great Wendy classic), the disturbing 'Where Are You' (which is the right kind of moving) and the lovely ballad 'This Doesn't Have To Be Love'. All THESE should have been singles instead. Otherwise, while there's nothing terrible on the album, the others songs veer from catchy and moving in bits to steady stagnancy and irredeemable bits of soppiness and outright whining. After this they did not have the power to go on together, clearly their legacy is not as important as Bangles, but they must be the next best thing, though if Shakespears Sister are termed a girl group (though there's only two) they come before.
After an okay but nothing special solo album from Chynna, which none the less has 2 truly fine songs on it in 'Remember Me' and 'Follow Love Down', with the 1st 2 singles being next. Otherwise it was a routine affair, with even more corny areas: titles like 'This Close', 'Till The End' and 'Jewel In My Crown' almost make you wanna hurl before you even begin listening, and there's one truly atrocious piece if yuck on it, of which the title says everything. Yes it's written by Diane Warren (which is warning enough) and it has hands-down one of the most disgusting titles a grown-up girl would ever have. So of COURSE they make it a single! Of course, only as bad as this, is the other two's horrible Christmas album. One Pariah Carey is more than bad enough thank you. And while the single 'Monday Without You' they did with their father from 1997 (though he sounds dreadful on it, just stop mate!), the band may as well not have got back together as all they're content to do now is wallow in typical US covers, and no original material whatsoever. Weirdly, from All Media Guide horror, Chynna's only solo album is actually reviewed better than the publication ever felt about their 2 original albums as a group, but of course, as with most records, All Media Guide are wrong.
Nothing has been said about the UK here, but we took to Wilson Phillips well, but they were too good at the start to register properly with all their work. While we had exactly the same singles picked from both albums as in its parent country, 'You're In Love' had the brass gall to limp into the Top 30 barely, supplanting the best song on the album-'Release Me' by 7 places! And 'Impulsive' missed the Top 40, while the final needless release saw no success at all. The album itself performed strongly, reaching No.7 and charted for 32 weeks, and called one of the biggest selling debuts over here for some years in the 90s. The 2ns album bizzarely went a place higher, despite the dodgy choice of 1st single ballad release not rising above No.18 (lucky it got there), but unlike the debut, the album was out of the chart before the school Summer holidays had properly started. We typically treated Wendy's 2nd single as vocalist not much better than her 1st, but it did strike same placing as 'Release Me'. The final awful choice did not chart anywhere, just like their final debut album's choice. Interestingly enough, while Chynna's solo album did not achieve a chart placing anywhere apart from Australia (No.35), while its 1st 2 singles did well over there too, 'Naked And Sacred'-the single-did manage No.62 in the UK. it went 30 places higher in a bizarre move when some other unknown bird released it in 1998.
Wilson Phillips had the potential to be so much more than what they made of their career, and haven't a parch on the Bangles' admittedly too short career, but stayed stronger over a much longer time. Nonetheless there's a stupid belief that any act's career is judged by how long they last; while staying power is important, most acts are lucky to even get one album of quality out there worth owning. The reality is most people last way too long, and often don't deserve even one song in the 1st place, never mind a recording contract for even one album! Wilson Phillips's debut remains, despite 2 weaker songs on it, one of 1990's best albums (and no En Vogue's 'Hold On'-same title for a totally different song) is not better than theirs) and their 2nd album is better than what many can manage, despite its even greater faults, so while they only remain a 2 album unit sadly, that still matters. And I'd never EVER compare the bullshite, candyfloss, manufactured garbage approach of Splice Girls and all their ilk (Hurl Aloud, All Faints, Non-Eternal) and all of that other stuff, even the soul-bores of the other types to Wilson Phillips, their legacy was short, but it is still set in stone, cos unlike all the following unnameable horrors, they actually mattered, and its grown up proper music, in fact the last time it was done as the 90s turned into hellish excreta, as would every decade following. Oh and Chynna's solo album, while the weakest cousin related to the 2 WP originals, it beats the shite out of anything that appalling barbie doll of blandness footballer's wife ex-infernal Eternal would ever do, she should have been thrown down a well at once. Bu then the mid-late 90s to the present day is all about mass-produced unchallenging garbage for idiots as pointless as the product.

I gotta admit- In my youth I’ve ALWAYS been a WilPhil “PHAN” but I realize that as I continue to hear the live performances, I have to ask myself what it is that made me really like listening to them to begin with. I don’t ever expect a perfect performance from any artists, however there is some basic level of intonation and accuracy and balance in their performances that even the deaf would understand that the three of them no longer blend as the recordings and albums suggest. I wish they would focus and give a little bit more of themselves when they do perform live. Otherwise they aren’t doing anyone or any remake justice. I do love WilPhil a great deal but someone needs to be honest and let them know. Otherwise they need to hide those CZcams clips in a vault where no one will be get see/ hear it again. Sigh…. I hope I’m not being rude with sharing my opinion.
