Naval strategy in the Age of Sail | 1500 - 1850 | Naval warfare in the age of sailing ships | Weather gage | Line of battle | Doubling Music: William Rosati Parzival #militarystrategy
Probably came on this from playing Ultimate Admiral: Age of Sail. Good deal of my battles were won not having the weather gauge. Have to sail along the edge slower, work your way upwind and then double back. I like doing the multiple Trafalgar: aim my ships in between enemy ships with the weather gauge (preferably attacking from the rear of the line) to get raking shots from both sides then pounce and board. Tailoring ships in the game by technology and loading for as much speed reservoir as possible.
I just got done watching Master and Commander, and I got curious about how naval tactics were implemented during that time lol. Truly fascinating things Always be curious
I'm here due to curiosity - my journey started with the Obj 261 in World of Tanks and its 180 mm B-1-P gun, which is a repurposed naval artillery gun ... it caught my eye due to being a 3 tiered barrel so wanted to know more about what the tiering was about. 4 wiki pages on naval guns, naval artillery, naval combat and....here I am as I've always wondered exactly how ships of the line tactics worked. Still not sure why ti's tiered lol
the maneuver at 3:30 assumes that the leeward line of ships are just standing in place..? Assuming the ships are capable of similar speeds, the leeward line is going to be far ahead by the time windward tries to close with them.
Great video, simple and useful.
Master and commander brought me here.
Lol same

I’m currently replaying Total War: Empire, it’s during the 18th and 19th centuries and you have naval battles like this…Good times!

I'm here exactly after Aubrey finally catches the Acheron by surprise after the night.
Well done

Nelson used this tactic at Aboukir Bay (The Nile) in Egypt against a French fleet. The French fleet was anchored, so not moving.
@Joe091680 interesting, why they where anchored? Were they taken by surprise ?
👍
I'm here because I want to get better at Sea of Thieves. I keep getting my bleep pushed in online matches hahahaa
Aah, a fellow man of culture.
After this video we shall rule the seas!

Dude sorry you don't have more likes bro but dam peeps don't read-eh de inklesh no mo
These "tactics" are either contradicting, balanced out by disadvantages or have obvious counters. These cant be the decisive tactics of naval warfare.
How are they contradicting
