It also affects insurance coverage and life insurance coverage having a diagnoses on paper.

Well, what they don't know doesn't hurt them... (Is that the correct use of "don't" and doesn't"?)

Just take out the apostrophe’s and replace with the full words to check your work, hope that makes sense.

I felt like I could not afford to not pay for the diagnosis, because I was motivated by misdiagnoses and the resulting maltreatment when I sought any sort of care from my HMO. I paid for it with a credit card several years ago and I probably have not paid it off yet 😬
Since I was also diagnosed with ADHD in that assessment, I eventually was able to obtain appropriate treatment (it took over 6 months following diagnosis). Since that time, my debt and credit score are improving, but I have a long way to go.

Another risk is misdiagnosis, which is super invalidating.

In the country where I live there are special autism diagnosis and studies centers and 0 psychiatrist outside of those centers can give you a diagnosis. The waitlists are through the roof and even though I got my psychiatrist to write a letter to recommend me to them, I’m so afraid that I will be dismissed immediately or misdiagnosed. Cause I wanna know 100%, not just stick it on me or completely dismissing me.

    Additional cons I know:
    * You might not be able to get some insurances, like accident insurance.
    * You might not be able to donate gametes.
The first one apparently depends on the insurance company, but I think it's pretty dumb as many autistic people take risk avoidance to the max, which more than compensates some risk factors.
The second one is the case at least in Finland, though it has been recently considered to be changed.

@@knrdvmmlbkkn of course if you donate privately (basically works only for men), you don't need to tell. But if you donate in a clinic, they will have access to your medical records as far as I can tell. I don't know how exactly the system works (I've not donated, I don't have an official diagnosis). Mere ADHD diagnosis makes it illegal for you to donate gametes for fertility treatments. It is completely bonkers, because if those are serious diseases, why do people then have difficulty accessing the diagnosis and will not usually get any other support than ADHD medication? (We don't have much accommodations mandated, it's mostly just about equal treatment, which basically means only that you cannot be discriminated against).

Okay. That doesn't have a lot to do with insurance. But I suppose my quotation didn't clearly express that I was referring to both alleged "cons".

@@knrdvmmlbkkn for insurance companies, they cannot access your health records if you don't consent. However, if you have a diagnosis that you are not lettimg them know, if they somehow get that information later, it can be considered insurance fraud. So whether it is about donating gametes (for clinics) or getting an insurance, you're not off the hook just by not disclosing.
