  • "Hurt" is a famous song by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails from its second studio album, The Downward Spiral (1994), written by Trent Reznor. It was released on April 17, 1995, as a promotional single from the album. The song received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Song in 1996. In 2002, Johnny Cash covered "Hurt" to commercial and critical acclaim. Reznor praised Cash's interpretation of the song for its "sincerity and meaning", going so far as to say "that song isn't mine anymore". The song includes references to self-harm and heroin addiction, though the overall meaning of the song is disputed and under debate.
This is American composer Eric Whitacre's brilliant arrangement of "Hurt" for solo soprano and SATB chorus, written in 2014 and performed/recorded in 2017 by soprano Grace Davidson and the Eric Whitacre Singers.
    COMPOSER: Trent Reznor
    LYRICIST: Trent Reznor
    ARRANGER: Eric Whitacre
    SOPRANO: Grace Davidson
    CHOIR: Eric Whitacre Singers

Wow, I would say this is, in my opinion, one of the best pieces by Eric Whitacre. So strong! Even if it's only an arrangement, but it's simply congenial!

Wonderful. No idea seconds on vocals could work so well. So inspiring!

I need to amend my previous comment: this is probably the most beautiful piece I heard this year!

A very, very beautiful interpretation of the song. But I think making it beautiful is a disservice to its meaning.

Why are there wrong notes written in the solo line? Don't believe me? Go listen to the OG track. Whitacre has overstepped here.

A matter of taste. No overstep

If he can't bother to get the right notes in the melody then he needs to stay in his lane. Do it right or not at all.

@@laynewalker8867Do you not understand what "Arrangement Whitacre" allows?
You are pretending there are not literally millions of original scores, songs...that have been 'arranged by others' who have taken any and every liberty from the originals. Some are barely recognizable from the original.
Why are you playing games here?
ANYONE suggesting Whitacre "stay in his lane" or "overstepping"....well...you painted your own character here...I don't need to add a thing.
