I love this piece (and this recording) so much. It’s no surprise Caroline is a very competent string player herself… the way she uses color in this work is just so beautiful, intuitive, and precise. In fact, I learn more about string writing by studying her scores than I do from the likes of Lachenmann and Ferneyhough.

OK, so I've had a CD on my shelf for about 20 years called "Piedmont Avenue" by John R. Burr. Only today do I happen to find out that he played piano on The Sims as well! If you like this I recommend it, it even sounds like the same piano he's playing!

I sang in the chorus for this work in 1988, with the Cape Town Symphony Choir. It remains in my mind, particular the Shema Ysrael. Wonderful to hear it again after all these years

Lovely. We're playing this in Stirling orchestra coming up actually so here for research purposes. I believe we're the European premier actually... May 18th in Oban and May 19th in Stirling, 2024.

The IVe and Ve movements are particularly incredible, great for meditation. But the VIe movement is more modern and allegro, quite pleasing as well.

This shares some musical material (as well as titles of movements) with his earlier composition from 1993, "Earth and the Great Weather". It feels deliberate, and in some ways like a reworking/reinterpretation of some moments from that earlier piece... It makes me curious to hear his thoughts on the connection between the two pieces for him.
