- Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, violinist, and singer Caroline Shaw's "Plan & Elevation" for string quartet. Shaw writes in the program notes:
"I have always loved drawing the architecture around me when traveling, and some of my favorite lessons in musical composition have occurred by chance in my drawing practice over the years. While writing a string quartet to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Dumbarton Oaks, I returned to these essential ideas of space and proportion - to the challenges of trying to represent them on paper. The title, Plan & Elevation, refers to two standard ways of representing architecture - essentially an orthographic, or “bird’s eye,” perspective (“plan”), and a side view which features more ornamental detail (“elevation”). This binary is also a gentle metaphor for one’s path in any endeavor - often the actual journey and results are quite different (and perhaps more elevated) than the original plan."

Love the polyrhythm at 2:56-3:08. I also love the subtle call to Ravel's string quartet at 4:29, I was not at all expecting that.
I thought the same thing! Very subtle reference but it was really satisfying to recognize it
Yes, I also like the nod to the opening of Mozart's string quartet in G, K. 387 at 4:55.
The whole movement is made from quotes! There's the Ravel and Debussy string quartets (4:38), and Mozart 387, but also three of Shaw's pieces: Punctum, Valencia, and Entr'acte.
I love this piece (and this recording) so much.
It’s no surprise Caroline is a very competent string player herself… the way she uses color in this work is just so beautiful, intuitive, and precise.
In fact, I learn more about string writing by studying her scores than I do from the likes of Lachenmann and Ferneyhough.
so beautiful. the herbaceous border has got to be my favorite movement. i love the soaring melody in the violins and the glissando later on is brilliant.
I think this is my favourite piece ever
Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece. Really great to see the score.
epic music piece!
With love from Dumbarton, Scotland. Thankyou EK and Caroline. We took a lidar and modelled the Cadzow Oaks not far from Dumbarton.....Attacca..........
Heard this played by Attacca Quartet at King's Place, London. Moving and Powerful.
Now I think I understand the way she sings...
Ravel is that you ?
2:34, cantaaaabile, is this a joke or ?
azz...
a bit melodramatic
I guess everybody has different reactions to music. I love the amount of life, drama, emotion, and tranquillity in this piece. I cried during the last movement
4.29 quoting Debussy…
Not melodramatic _enough_ !
