With Bo Nickal's UFC debut on the horizon, we thought it would be fun to post this throwback to when Bo took on Gordon Ryan. Bo was fresh off a u23 World Championships gold medal, and is one of the most decorated college wrestlers of all time. Gordon Ryan was the most dominant force in Jiu Jitsu and he hadn't lost in over a year and half. This was a matchup both wrestling and grappling fans were excited to see!

I have to admit when there was about 7 minutes left on the clock, I just started skipping forward to see if anything happened. Bo was literally just standing there slapping Ryan away and not attempting any takedowns (I know the reason why but it leaves us with a situation where he's just trying to avoid being taken down for 15 minutes) And it's obvious Ryan can't take him down in a traditional way so it's kind of an an impasse.

What I can say is that getting rid of any types of guard pulls and all leg submissions is a huge disadvantage for Gordan. This is because the main thing different from BJJ and wrestling is that you can use guard and attack for submissions, some of the best being those attacking the legs. This made it as close to wrestling as possible with very little difference only being you can submit. What I'm trying to say is that this gave a major disadvantage to Gordan throughout the match.

    • @justinha9846

I wouldn't say it's a huge disadvantage. There are a thousand other submissions that can easily be setup that aren't leglocks. It just makes it a bit more fair. It's still very unfair for Bo but it's slightly more fair (and way more safe for him) since he doesnt have to worry about leglocks.

I never really had much trouble throwing wrestlers, but then again, they were playing by Judo rules and I would NEVER say Judo is better than wrestling, they are simply different, with different rules. It was obvious that he wasn't trying to win, he was just stalling. He did one suplex, which was nice, but then immediately got away again because he had no real idea of how to actually win the match. Even with the rules limiting Ryan, once he got ahold of something other than his legs (which he couldn't use to finish the match), it was over as expected. I would be interested in a rematch if Bo took some time to fully train in jiu-jitsu and they had a straight up match to truly test his skills.

Shows how much of a disparity there is for each specialist. If there were leg locks it was over in the first minute.

And if strikes were allowed, even though neither do striking, the wrestler would have undoubtedly won.

@@siavosh87 Definitely not the case. If neither of them do striking it is all guessing who would have won. Striking from the feet would be neutral and striking from the ground I would say the jiu jitsu would play a large roll. Would love to see it an MMA match between them.

@@MackTrainingAcademy the striking probably favors the wrestler more for just a ground and pound situation. Wrestling is all about pressure and control. A good ground and pound is all about keeping a dominant position over your opponent , so it fits wrestling perfectly. Also if you’re experiencing a ground and pound wrestling would probably help you get back to ur feet than bjj. The only advantage bjj has is potential submissions, but those already exist without the striking.
