My parents first date was at Bob's in Glendale (1941) My dad told me a burger was 15 cents. Which I still some of those Bob's Big Boy decals that I had on the rear window of my 1962 Chevrolet.
I'm originally from Warren, Michigan (currently in Madison, OH) and there was a Big Boy just a few miles up the street near 10 mile RD and Ryan RD. Been there for Dinner/Lunch maybe just a few times in my childhood. Love to go back someday. Sadly, here in Madison OH, the nearest Big Boy is in Maple Heights, just south of Cleveland. =(
Back in the 1960's and 70's, I grew up in Toluca Woods about 2 miles from the Burbank location. Big Boy Combo with a Silver Goblet Milkshake was awesome! The shrimp dinner was good as well. Gotta get back over there one of these days soon!
I miss Bob's in San Diego, CA. We use to have at least 5 locations; now they're all gone 🙁. We did have a brief return of one Bob's big boy location in the east county, but the owner was charging too much for rent, and so that Bob's diner ended up closing it's doors.
i live on the west coast and i tried bobs and it was good. Im from the east coast and theres a place called Skips opened in 1947 and its just like bobs they have car shows and everything. the only difference is they were open from april 1st-october 31st
GOD I LOVE BIG BOY! Bring them back to Wisconsin. Seriously, the big boy double burger blows the SHIT out of the big mac. The Big mac is an imposter and a copy cat version of the big boy burger.

The very best of and the first American Family Restaurant chain Bob's Big Boy. Started and founded by Robert C. Wian (LA,CA) in 1936 a small 10 seat snack and quick sandwich bar. Grew from this small business to the first and largest consistent growing Family Restaurant and Drive-IN across America chain of excellence! Bob Wian designed and developed the Original Big Boy Double Decker Hamburger and the first to license and franchise Big Boy restaurant locations to private owners and operators across the nation. It has been said a Big Boy Restaurant never failed if it was managed properly according to franchise training and direction. Big Boy restaurants were know by some of these first names Bob's, Kip's, Shoney's,Ted's, Top's,Frisch's, Marc's, Elias Bro., JB's, Vip's,Elby's, Manner's, Azar's and others all located in various states and regions across the country. In the 50's through the 80's many families enjoyed the Home of the Big Boy wherever they traveled even in Canada. Today Big Boy Restaurants are growing and expanding under the name "Big Boy Restaurants" licensed from the parent company in Warren, MI. We love "Big Boy!"
Shoney's had the Big Boy franchise in the South but they dropped Big Boy affiliation in the early 80's as they began overlapping into Elby's and Frisch's territory. They used the 1000 Island sauce on their Big Boy burger. The last Azar's Big Boy closed in Fort Wayne, Indiana in the summer of 2020 due to Covid 19. They were subfranchised through Frisch's and used the tartar sauce.
Man, I miss Big Boys Double Decker Burger 🍔 and square cut fries! The one in my town shut down years ago. They also had great chocolate sundaes and shakes! I may have to make a pilgrimage to Burbank. Many people say I look exactly like the Big Boy mascot!
I liked food paradise when this guy narrated it it was interesting with places that you actually wanted to go to the newer episodes are annoying and loud with hipster hangouts
Yes in Michigan the Big Boy uses a 1000 Island type sauce, but in neighboring Ohio the Frisch's franchise uses a famous tartar sauce. In California, the original Bob's Big Boy uses the red relish and mayo.
Back around 1970, Eat-N-Park had the Big Boy. It was not a conventional double decker burger. They had a Special Sauce that was literally addictive. It was a variant of tartar sauce but obviously not the same. (The Big Mac special sauce is mustard based and is terrible). This Big Boy was the ONLY burger that me and my friends would specifically get hungry for. Since then, NO burger has had any identity. Eat-N-Park changed hands a few times I guess, Elby got involved, and now THE Big Boy has been lost to oblivion. Its very sad.
Elby's Big Boy in Pennsylvania and West Virginia have long since shut down and when I dined there they used 1000 Island sauce. Eat-N-Park is still in operation, but they dropped Big Boy years ago and I'm not sure if their current burgers use a special sauce.
@@Mr.TylerSC Interesting. The BB in Jeannette, PA on Rte 30 was not like the Elby's BB also on Rte 30 in the next town. Elby's had a different sauce - it could very well have been 1000 Island sauce which is tan and most likely what the Big Mac used. There was no comparison, the JBB had the magic. The Jeannette BB was white which is the color of mayo in this video. They mention relish. Mayo + Relish = Tartar sauce (mostly.) I don't think the JBB used simply mayo. I think it was a Tartar Sauce variant - and TS varies. No doubt, that sauce _was the franchise!_

Our juicy all-beef patty is topped with crispy hash browns, two strips of Applewood-smoked bacon, two slices of American cheese, ketchup and a fried egg*. Served with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles on a Brioche bun.
I was listening to the Sick and Wrong Podcast, Episode 599, and the host said that he had recently eaten at Bob's Big Boy for the first time in his life (hamburger, milkshake, no fries) and the food immediately gave him the trots! He said you probably should not expect any better from a restaurant chain which has a diabetic looking 11 year-old boy as a mascot!! 😂😂😂
@ 0:57, why didn't they just make a thicker patty, or just put two patties on top of each other? The extra slice of bread in the middle seems pointless to me.
Burger patties tend to ooze grease immensely back then. So to resolve that problem *they put a bun between the two patties to absorb the grease.* Nowadays, they resolved the grease problem, but it is now a tradition for the double decker burger.

Cool video. Bob Wian is my dad. Nice to see his legacy lives on. Now I'm craving a burger. No Bob's in New Mexico. 😢
Julie Wian I never had your dad's food sadly since I live in Virginia, but I wish to some day. 😄😄😄😄😋😋😋😋

Does it drive you nuts when people refer to Big Boy as, "Bob"? It's one of my pet peaves as a former cook and waiter at Bob's. :)

They need better lighting out there for the cars on display. Kinda scary the way it is, to navigate after dark.
The closest Big Boy to me is 5 min. away. It came out in the movie Can't Hardly Wait.

In Michigan we have a thousand island type dressing but I really wanna try one with that red relish 🤔

Seems to me that this burger is built upside down according to modern burger convention: relish on the bottom, patty, cheese, lettuce, mayo.
Well, since this is the original double-decker, which one is made upside down? :)
