Steam Link & Steam VR Settings Guide - Latency Vs Image Quality

  • In this video, we take a look at the new Steam Link PCVR mode, and Steam VR settings, to see what is possible when it comes to latency and picture quality.
    I forgot to mention about foveated rendering - apologies - this reduces the quality of the image in your peripheral vision/out of the sweet spot, which reduces latency, however it clearly is something that not everyone wants/needs, and hopefully we will get the option of turning this off at some point. There has been a potential fix suggested for the audio issues some people are experiencing: To fix the audio issues, under audio in the steam menu, change audio output device from "headset" to "manual." Also, if you are experiencing crashes, there has been a suggestion that you need to check your ethernet connection is set to "public" and not "private." Mine was set to private, so I have changed to public and will be testing it over the coming days. Thanks all 👍

    Great video! I have a question...since the Quest 3 max resolution per eye is 2064x2208, is there any use in setting a higher res on Steam-Link (e.g. 3008 pixels for Project Cars)? That would only make sense with higher-end visors, correct? Thanks

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  Před 4 měsíci

      For best image quality you need the resolution set at around 3000 x 3000 due to the process the software does to correct for the shape of the lenses (you lose some pixels in this process). The problem is with steam link is that the encode resolution has a fixed limit which is a bit lower than needed, this means only so many pixels are sent to the headset even if you set the resolution much higher on steam. So if you set it as high as 3000 x 3000, it will be more demanding on your PC but won't send that resolution to the headset, giving you almost no visual benefit. Virtual Desktop can send more pixels to the headset, and should therefore give the best image with the Quest 3, or Oculus Link will also be pretty good. Setting the resolution higher in PCVR headsets like the PICO Neo 3 Link does have the full benefit. Steam Link however does use fixed foveated rendering which means more pixels are in the centre of your view than the outside edges, some people prefer this as it helps reduce latency, some people hate the slightly blurrier edges.

  • @montys8237
    @montys8237 Před 7 měsíci

    I'm curious what's the correct setting for steam resolution. If you have the slider in the oculus PC app render res set to max. Like you there's a notch on the render res slider at 150%. Is 100 lower than that? Is 150 supersampling or does the notch indicate that's where it should be for the headset?

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  Před 7 měsíci

      100% in steam will be whatever you set the resolution to on the oculus slider. They haven't however increased the resolution in the oculus software, so the maximum resoution in the oculus software isn't quite providing the full resolution to the panel, but, the oculus setting does set the encode resolution. So 100% in steam is the same res as in the oculus software, and increasing the res in steam does increase the encode res to the headset, so you are still not quite getting the full resolution to the Quiest 3. Increasing the resolution above 100% in steam does help slightly though, as it gives a more accurate sample when it then converts it to the encode res, but ideally meta need to increase the maximum resolution in the oculus software to allow the full resolution to be provided to the Quest 3 when it is encoded. Hope that makes sense 😬

    Any idea if the frame rate and render resolution settings affect flat games in the same way? I'm trying to get flat games working nicely on a big ol' virtual screen, but im not so sure what's happening.

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  Před 7 měsíci +1

      The settings might affect running a flat screen game over the desktop view, but the Steam VR environment takes very little to run it so it shouldn't have that much of an impact. If you are experiencing latency or other issues I would keep the overlay setting I mention as High, but then drop the target bandwidth and see if that helps. Hope you manage to get it sorted 👍

    Does the render window on the pc effect the performance in the headset? People say it doesnt but i swear i have gotten better performance by taking measures, such as reducing my monitor resloltion or hiding the render window. How can it be that i run my headset at say 80hz and the game windows is running at 120 hz and there is no impact from that? It makes no sense nor can i get a consistent result from my testing

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  Před měsícem

      It luckily isn't rendering it seperately twice, and usually it won't match the refresh rate of your monitor as far as I am aware-for example if you have your monitor at 144hz but vr at 72 you would see a new frame once every two frames on your monitor. That's an easy frame rate to compare but if it was 90hz in VR and 144 on your monitor then each vr frame will show the next time the monitor refreshes after the VR frame was rendered/presented. It will likely still see a very small amount of extra load having it on your monitor, but it will be small. If your monitor or monitors are stuck at their full refresh rate all the time with a high resolution then that alone will put extra load on your system. So if you lower the resolution or frame rate of your monitor that could save some gpu/cpu etc for VR. Hope that helps 👍

    This is a noob question as I am new to vr and using a occulus 2 on a pc that has a rtx 4060 and i5-12400f. First game I tried was propagation vr through steamvr and the fps and quality on my desktop is amazing during the game but my vr quality is bad. It feels like its at a lower fps and hz. Like there is a delay with my hand movement but the streaming to my desktop there is no delay. Is that just how vr is or am I missing a setting? I would think it would look at least a little better and run a little closer to how my game is running on my desktop.
    Edit: also the occulus app says to hook the cable to a 3.0 usb port but it is a 3.0 usb port...

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  Před 7 měsíci +1

      So VR should be a smooth experience in the headset, just like on the PC. So you are using a usb cable to connect to the PC through Oculus Link. I would get fpsvr, and then when your are in the Oculus Link home page (before opening a game, open Steam VR, and then open your game from in Steam VR. This way you can look at/open fpsVR and look at the performance stats. You need to make sure that your CPU and GPU are managing to meet the frame time (graph in fpsvr should be green). You also need to check in fpsvr that your gpu and cpu usage isn't maxed out near 90-100%. You can also see if any frames are dropped. With all of this info you can then adjust your resolution and frame rate so your system can cope with it. You should also test your usb link in the Oculus app, hopefully it confirms you are using USB 3.0 (that the cable and USB port are 3.0) and the connection speed. I hope this helps and hope you manage to sort it 👍

    • @MagicalAlpaca

      @@MagicalAlpaca Yeah, unfortunately if the adapter isn't 3.0 then it will reduce it to whatever USB standard it is (2.0/1.0). This will also help you to see what is going on performance wise. I hope the cable manages to sort it for you though 👍

      For steam link I would probably put it around 1700x1700 (or roughly whatever that would be) for the resolution, 72fps, bitrate keep on auto, encode res keep on auto. Then see how that performs whilst monitoring something like fpsvr and put the resolution up or down depending on whether your PC is managing it. With a 1060 though I would probably recommend using virtual desktop, and turn on synchronous space warp. This will allow you headset to create half the frames, and your PC the other half, and you will be able to put your graphics settings higher. Hope that helps 👍

      @DayDreamerVR  Před 7 měsíci

      If you need motion smoothing or the superresolution upscaling then Virtual Desktop will be better, otherwise I would say that Steam Link is simpler to use, but it does have foveated rendering which makes the peripheral vision slightly less clear - but it improves your latency by doing that 👍

    Im quite confused. I own a pc with an i9 13900k processor and a 4090 and my system is struggling to maintain the proper frame timings running at 120hz. Ive been at this for weeks and I cannot get my vr games to run well at all. I have a system that should be able to keep up at least much better than it currently is.

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  Před 2 měsíci

      At 120hz the frame timings are tiny, which means you really need to drop the graphical settings very low. I would recommend reducing the resolution very very low, see if that gets the frame time to a manageable amount, then increase it slowly. I have a 4090,and I have my settings and resolution high, but only run at 72hz, so my frame times can be almost twice as long as yours at 120hz,and I'm pushing my frame times to the limit.

  • @montys8237
    @montys8237 Před 7 měsíci +1

    One other note to if steam is using h265 encoding unless something's different I think this setting is just a target, I'm not sure what it's actually pushing. On wifi 6e I get microstutter after 250mbps. I think the vd creator said that's about as much as the quest 3 chip can decode yet without crazy latency. I'm not sure how people could run it at anymore if that's a quest hardware limitation? Although someone said they have it at 350 but it doesn't go over 250 in reality? Have you tested this with any software overlay?

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  Před 7 měsíci

      So i don't know exactly what the limit of H265 with the Quest 3 is, but VD set a maximum of 200Mbps for h265, and steam link sets the max at 350. The higher you go the more latency there is as you have mentioned. I don't get any stuttering at 350 on steam link on a standard WiFi 6 router, but this can be impacted by numerous factors (interference, number of devices on the band, distance from the router etc). Steam link, under vr settings has the option for a performance overlay, if you turn this on and then look at your desktop in steam you can see the performance (bitrate is at the very top left) and I then pin the desktop view to my left controller. Then checking in a game such as Half Life Alyx, it tends to vary mostly from about 290 to 320, but from a quick couple of minutes playing I did see it very briefly go up to 338. In menus etc it seemed to stay around 290Mbps. With steam link, it uses foveated rendering so your peripheral view has less detail, which brings the latency lower than would be expected for 350Mbps. Hope that helps 👍

      @@DayDreamerVRinteresting you mentioned you seen yours go above 250 in the debug graph I think your mentioning? I don't see it and someone else online doesn't see it either. They also mentioned they don't see it go above 250. Maybe just went you start out or loading but then mine levels off below 250 slightly. And I get a slight micro when I'm walking in alyx (maybe your teleporting) at 350.
      I'm using Asus 7800 wifi 6e, 6ghz channels. Curious what all your other steam settings are set to? I also assume your just on 5ghz?

    I was comparing Steam Link to Virtual desktop and even on the highest settings steam link had better performance in terms of latency which is very low and much higher frame rates but still worse image quality then VD , VD on the other hand looks much crisper but also performs alot worse in terms of latency and framerates on my PC i dont know why though.... i912900K, 32GB DDR 5 RAM @6200mhz and a RTX 4090, connection is realized over a TP-Link Archer AXE75 Wi-Fi 6E Router.
    Does anyone know why this would be??
    My guess is that on VD im using the AV1 Codec for Quest3 and the sharpening filter which both are not working on steam link right?

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  Před 3 měsíci

      Steam Link uses foveated rendering, this means the resolution is lower in your peripheral vision, which reduces latency and increases fps. Steam link also doesn't go as high as VD with the resolution being rendered, or the resolution being sent through the data stream which again boosts fps and reduces latency, but both these things reduce image quality. Virtual Desktop is more capable when it come to image quality, but you would have to put the settings lower than steam links to get the same latency or fps. Hope that helps 👍

So select steam, steam vr and any games you are running that are using the igpu and set them to your dedicated gpu. You might have to add an app at the very top of the page if it isn't in the list. I would recommend keeping the encode res and bitrate in automatic, and set the steam vr resolution to 100% whilst testing. Then I would recommend getting fpsvr and checking in the game that nothing is showing as orange/red and seeing how many fps you are getting and what your gpu and cpu usage is like. You can also check the debug graph from steam link on your desktop, the latency graph is on the bottom half of the graph and your frame rate, and bitrate are at the very top left of the debug window. Not sure I understand the difference between frame time and latency. You mention that 20ms for latency is good for HL Alyx, but with frame time needing to be 12.5ms for 80fps, I’m confused what latency figures you are referring to. Sorry if it’s a noob question

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  Před 4 měsíci +1

      That's a really good point. So the frame time is how long it takes for your pc to generate an image. Then it needs to be Encoded by your gpu to make it small enough to send over WiFi. The it will be transferred via WiFi, and decoded by your headset. The total time it takes for your pc to create the image, and the time it takes to encode/send/decode is the total amount of latency. So when something happens, if your total latency from start to finish is 30ms,then you will see that something happen, 30ms after it actually did. When you finally get that image, if your pc is stable and the transferring is stable, then you should see each frame at regular intervals/spacing with around the same amount of latency 👍 hope that makes sense

    • @grantharper6409
      @grantharper6409 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@DayDreamerVR brilliant, thank you. So GPU frame time is only one part of the overall latency from start to finish.
      I’m fairly new to VR, and it seems like an art to balancing everything, rather than an exact science. I’ve been using frame time as the guide for optimising fps performance and resolution, but perhaps I need to look at latency also, as this will include bitrate encoding size etc.

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@grantharper6409 There's alot to consider, but the frame times must be on time for a good experience (other wise frame can be inconsistent which can cause you to feel ill), other latency can be to your own preference. I really like making the most of image quality, so I put up with higher overall latency where I can. If you are doing competitive gaming or sim racing where reaction times can be critical, a lower overall latency can be more crucial, welcome to VR-enjoy 👍

      As long as your encode resolution is at its maximum, your resolution is reasonably high, and your PC is connected with ethernet and your WiFi is coping with the bitrate, it should be pretty clear. There is however foveated rendering which you can't turn off. Do you know what your GPU and CPU load is and do you have enough spare for more demanding scenes? You can use a tool like fpsVR for checking this. I would recommend going on to Virtual Desktop (if you have it), and testing your setup there and put the performance overlay on, this will tell you what your latencies are for each step, and the frametime of the CPU and GPU (how long it takes to make each image), this way you can start to narrow down what the issue might be.
