been in Canada and Montreal for 20 years but: -the english pop in montreal already speak english and 90% of the french population can speak english fluently, its extremely hard to find a french canadian who cannot speak fluently english. -summers in Montreal are much more exciting that Toronto. There is much more thing to do in MTL than Toronto. -Montreal has a unique french-english identity while Toronto is basically just a generic north american city -The landscape of the city is just better -very affordable housing. even housing in downtown is way more affordable than Toronto. - The tech industry is more developed in Montreal than Toronto - If you are unilingual and only speak english, you can come to Montreal get friends and you can be fluent in french in 4 years if you put it on a little bit effort. I have several friends who came in Montreal with 0 french and now, they literally refuse to speak to me in english. My only regret is that we dont have a basketball team :)
While I agree that Montreal is a gem in North America, I think, as a non-French speaker, finding a job in Montreal is relatively harder than in Toronto. Toronto is also arguably more diversified and offers a bit more business opportunities ever since the rush of companies relocating to Toronto when Quebec wanted out. Montreal's transit system covers the island way better than Toronto though the wait time is also significantly longer and the vehicle are quite old and not as easily accessible for people with disability. I feel like I would have loved Montreal more if I had spoken French, which is why I'm thinking of taking French classes in University. I visit Montreal quite often, in the Summer and on Christmas breaks.
90% of the french population can speak english fluently = is a false statement. If you go outsideof Montreal, very few people speak English fluently = almost all of the Anglos have left Quebec. How can you speak fluent English if there are no more Anglos to speak with ?
