- I've designed and built a modest yet functional chicken coop and run on my neighbor's property. This job was undertaken because of my commitment to fostering a stronger sense of self-reliance within our community but also to bolsters our overall food security.
By providing a safe and comfortable space for chickens to thrive, we're not just promoting a sustainable lifestyle, but also ensuring a consistent supply of fresh, locally sourced eggs. This project stands as a testament to our collective effort in shaping a more resilient and interconnected neighborhood.

what brand is the chicken door?
They constantly change. I haven’t found a consistent supplier of the specific type of door in the video. The one I used is “currently unavailable” on amazon
I can say Roost safe doors are no good. They use bad grease in the motor that freezes at -35°C. Very unreliable, hard to program and kills chickens that get stuck in it. Broke after not even 5 months.
Good to know! I have used several varieties, and so far so good, but the reviews are very mixed and it takes me a couple of hours of research each time to find something I feel confident about.
@@thehomesteadconsultant we gave up on digital doors and enclosed 2 sections of our outdoor storage shed, predator proofed it & we leave the door open unless it is -40. They got a bit of frostbite, but they are still all alive & well. I also found a heat light in the coop on one side when it is colder helps egg production, for chickens & turkeys, I still get 6+ chicken eggs a day. Without the red light, it is 3 or 4, turkeys none. We have Ducks too, but no eggs until late spring, probably May. The ducks are great, they have weeded everything in the greenhouse!
