How Does Vision Affect Reading?

While we all know we use our eyes when we read, many of us don't realize how many different visual processes are used to read and comprehend. These crucial visual skills are a developed process, and for many children beginning the journey of reading, their skills are not at the level needed for successful reading. Amplify EyeCare Chattanooga's Dr. Heather McBryar explains how our vision affects our ability to read. A visit to the eye doctor primarily involves checking the health of the eyes and receiving the correct prescription. However, when a child starts the journey of reading we recommend that they undergo a more thorough eye exam called a developmental eye exam where the developmental optometrist will look at all the visual processes used in the classroom. During a developmental eye exam we test the additional visual skills required for reading. Some of these visual skills include good eye tracking, eye teaming, accommodative ability and visual processing.
