  • For a long time, patching was considered the mainstream treatment for lazy eye or amblyopia. However, based on the findings of many studies on amblyopia, we now know that there is a more effective treatment option besides patching alone.
In this video, Dr. Heather McBryar FCOVD from Amplify EyeCare Chattanooga talks about an alternative treatment to patching for amblyopia known as Monocular fixation in a binocular field (MFBF). It basically means training one eye at a time while both eyes are open. Children who are non-compliant with patching find it more fun. Furthermore, it does not require parents to constantly monitor their children like patching does. Most importantly it trains the brain to reconnect with the weaker eyes visual system while integrating that weaker eye with the stronger eye. Since binocular vision (using two eyes) is a critical component of vision, training the eyes to work as a team is the ideal method for amblyopia treatment.
