ARP Wheel Studs: amzn.to/43s8vHS
Last time we worked on the WRX, we ran into the issue of not being able to remove the wheel locks. We're getting them off today and we're replacing them with some ARP wheel studs so I don't have to worry about that issue. Once we get the new studs installed we can get the Aeroflow Dynamics Wheel Spacers installed and see how they look!

Mr. Vo, you are truly the great explainer. I am an Abuelo who has a 22 WRX Limited in white and love it..the grandkid loves it even more, I taught him how to drive a stick on this car. Keep up the wonderful work you do…thanx for sharing.
Glad to hear you're enjoying the car, thanks for watching!!
These frequent and helpful uploads really boost my week
Glad you're enjoying them!
I agree! One of the fee channels I look forward to!
When taking wheel lugs off with a tire iron my dad taught me to literally stand on top of the edge of the tire iron in order to get enough force to undo it. Works like a charm
Done that before but not on my cars haha I'd be worried the nut would suddenly loosen very quickly and the tire iron would fly off into the car or my shin.
They always tend to torque the s out of these things at shops. Another thing, is the angle of the wrench/iron whatever. Usually you can place it in a way that allows you to lean back and push with your legs giving you way more power
Milwaukee all day. Time to look at your tool set sir. Itll take off even a axle nut with ease. But awesome video kev can wait for more wrx content
Flush fitment right there, nice job it looks much better!
ARP studs are my favorite invisible upgrade that I've done to my 2020 WRX! They are awesome. Highly recommend them
Nice work Kevin. Watching you work and listening to your explanations gives me the confidence to try some of these things myself.
2022 BRZ Limited Automatic
Very nice video and I love how the wheels sit!
Do you know the torque specs for the front and rear caliper carrier bolts?
Another quality upload 🤌🏾
I try I try!
Great video. Hoped to see a walkthrough on the VB ahead of doing this next spring. I assumed everyhing would be pretty straightforward - always nice confirming, though!
The wheel studs snapping in my experience is from cross-threading when my cars have been in the shop. From little shops to the dealer (and I really like mine) at some point everywhere any car of mine has gone I've had a crossthreaded nut. Not all resulted in breaks...most were just high-resistance and tiny bits of metal falling out. Nuts go on with fingers and torque wrenches, nothing else.
Also: everyone should own a 1.25 tap/die and clean up the stud threads and wheel nuts every so often. Again...cleaning. Not saying re-thread! If it's that bad, replace it. Here in the snowbelt it's especially important.
Nice work! Mechanics have said no wheel spacers on my FR-S as they’re bad on the stock suspension. Advice/opinions on spacers for stock wheels and suspension to make it flush?
Looks really good for the cost. What aftermarket specs would I need to achieve the same look without spacers? I don’t know the stock offset + spacer difference.
I’d like to stick with 17’s because I want rally golds for a more rugged look. Just don’t know what wheel width + offset I’d need for this flush look!
I am so impressed the key and the lock nuts did not strip with that much torque placed on em. You kept a pretty good angle on it so kudos to you. If that's how it came from the factory, I would be mind blown.
I honestly was convinced they wouldn't come off without some sort of issue.
@@KevinVo anyone who has suffered from the same or similar issue likely thought you were 'done for' as well....lol. good stuff though!
Nice man! Def invest in 1/2 breaker bar! Perfect to break loose those over tightened nuts 😅
Looking good - great video! Super helpful! You can use an impact to loosen lug nuts. Just need to make sure you're not using chrome sockets, those can shatter badly. The black sockets are meant to be heat treated and may crack, but won't shatter like a grenade :-) Just shouldn't use an impact to tighten them, or if you do only to the point they make contact with the wheel. From there use a torque wrench.
Lug nuts, yes, but I don't think wheel locks take well to being impacted as I've seen the face of them break off. As for impact sockets, I actually have impact sockets I just quickly grabbed that one.
very good job !
outstanding
Yep notice the difference , looks a lot better.
No flack from me for not ripping on the oem locking nuts. You bought a brand new car and had no replacement ready for the lock nuts, I’d have been sketched out too until I had a set of replacement studs to back me up. Digging the spacers on there, wasn’t sure how aeroflows spacers held up compared to Perrin or isc spacers. Hopefully they hold on for you. Great video as always. 🙏🏻
Thanks for watching!!
Was there any difference in the stock vs aftermarket wheel studs that required you to install the spacers? or would the factory studs work fine? Love the content! Keep it coming. New to modding :)
Not required for the spacers. I just replaced them for peace of mind.
If your wheel nuts are too tight to loosen by hand use your foot & step on the wheel brace. Works a charm. 👍
Here in Australia wheel spacers are illegal for some strange reason.
I'm doing this next weekend Kevin is an alignment in store for me after this modification?
Hey Kevin, I'm curious about the sacrificial lug nut you used to install the studs. Is it an open lug nut?
How far will you go with the build? Will you do bbk and coils?
Man I Love the content. I’m a New fan, definitely better explanation and so thorough and in depth. So easy to follow and your camera work is seriously the best. Some videos out there are all over the place, feels like watching cloverfield haha I loved how you stabilised the camera before you showed the offset difference. So detailed bro. Keep it up.
Glad you're enjoying the videos!! This will just be a clean daily driver. Trying to keep it relatable to most of my viewers.
hey kevin i was looking to buy the drl side markers from AEMtuners from one of your older videos but the link doesn’t work… is there any way they are still purchasable ?
Great vid! Can you let me know what lift you were using in the video? Thanks.
Thanks! Glad you figured it out!
That was a lot of ooga ooga's to get those off
Did the spacers have any impact on handling characteristics? Tight turn in, like in a parking lot? I wanna do spacers on my '21 but was a little on the fence about how it would impact it.
It'll be negligible.
What jacks are those?
We live to learn. The only way we learn is by making mistakes 👍🏻
So I have some 20MM wheel spacers I wanted to install anda buddy told me I need to trim wheel studs. I didnt think I did, any input?
@kevinVo what do you think about the stock breaks? I personally think they are awful. STI brembo kit upgrade or wait for Brembo kit to be available?
I would suggest upgrading pads and fluid first to see how that feels before going to a BBK.
I like it very nice 😮
these are cool but isn't it the usual practice to get a set of 9.5" +38? (I went with Advan RG4 9.5" +45)
Hi! My buddy broke a a wheel stud on his brand new impreza when he went to change out his wheels! Unrelated question, Im looking to get some quick jacks my self. Does your driveway have a slight slope?
It has a slight slope to the side but that's about it.
What made you choose that type of wheel spacer compared to the traditional ones you mentioned?
Ease of use. If I used the traditional ones I would need to install the extended wheel studs and then get open ended lug nuts.
Where did you get that lift? I need haha
Does it sling mud on the car ?
I don't think you were 'wrong'. Those wheel nuts should never have required that much torque to loosen. I was waiting for the crack as the stud broke!
I use the jack handle as a breaker bar extension. 2-1 saves us money and now the breaker bar is compact easy to store.
Idk what they are called but are those air powered jack worth it ? Also where do you suggest I get one?
czcams.com/video/DJqrO2KuIa4/video.html
you know the lot clown at the dealership they had put those locking nuts on just borrowed an impact from one of the wrenches, and just let it buck.
You used a wratchet-wrench for that? FMG.
Yo Kevin! Are you going to build the Toyota behind the WRX also ? Would love some overland stuff 😅
It's only 2wd 😅
Will hammering the studs out like that damage the wheel bearings?
The bearings see much more abuse than a couple pings with a hammer haha if you're really worried about it I'm sure there's a specific tool to do it.
@@KevinVo fuck it. I been wanting to upgrade my studs too. Hammer it is. 👍🏾
It needs some Volk bronze wheels 😅
I wouldn't say you were wrong. Logic would say if you could remove all the other lugs nuts by hand then the lock nuts should also be able to be removed by hand. If you had to use a big breaker bar on only the lock nuts then they were over torqued.
Can't argue with you there!
Forgot to ask my question. My tire guy told me he will not even put tires on a car with wheel spacers, claims they are dangerous… what are your thoughts?
Properly installed spacers are not dangerous. They're actually very widely used even in the racing community.
Never knew Argenby is a GR86 Enthusiast.
🤣🤣🤣
While it is an option, I normally skip the whole wheel spacer thing and save up straight to the wheels with the correct offset. It's just more money to spend on a temporary thing that you could just spend toward the permanent thing. It also adds another point of failure, which I'm also not comfortable with. Building a car requires patience. Sometimes you just have to stay stock until enough money comes in to make sure you don't spend extra money on half measures.
What if people just like the stock wheels?😢
@@KevinVo I've never encountered someone who's told me "nah the stock ones are better". 😆
Probably this video was not meant for you..😢
@@conspiracy8119 Still watched it.
Idiot? Not at all. My dad watched me struggle for almost an hour once before handing me the jack handle to put on the breaker bar. We never stop learning as long as our minds are willing.
They put more torque on his wheel lock than the car produces 😂
LOLOLOL
I think you’re very trusting leaving your car on your Jack over night.
You worried of people taking parts off?
@@KevinVo More concerned of the $1500 Jack missing or even the car itself. Someone out there will always like your stuff more. Don’t wanna give an opportunity.
Your not dumb. Shit like this happens. Glad you didn't snap a bolt!
Me too! What a relief haha
You just needed a stronger impact and it would have gotten them off easy👌🏼
no one suggested heat lol.,.
No wheel nut should take that much effort. If it does then Subaru need to look into their factory torque settings!
110Nm is perfect. 130Nm max. Any more than that is NG!
Note to self:
Check for wheel locks if buying new WRX 🧐👍
Also, are you curious what Subaru is gonna announce at Subiefest regarding the BRZ or do you already know?
It's likely going to be a TS or some special edition that doesn't really change too much. I'd expect a performance package similar to the GR86 Trueno Edition but with different aesthetic pieces obviously.
@KevinVo makes sense.
Id like to see em do a TS for the VB chassis or the Impreza RS seeing as there's no current STI
lol get a Milwaukee and it'll come off
This pains me seeing a torque wrench being used as a breaker bar. I was hoping I was wrong on the last video I just watched.
It's not a torque wrench...
I've found that the smarter a person is, the less common sense they possess, which means they weren't really that smart in the first place. 😂👍
🤣🤣🤣
You're not an idiot. What's the chances somebody's going to have a breaker bar if they catch a flat on the side of the road.. 3:18
I definitely don't keep one in my car haha
@@KevinVo we need a PSA for new WRX owners 😂
Thats lil too tight
Your lug nut where way overtorqued. This impact gun is good for a least 250 lbs of torque and you where struggling with your long bar...
No hate from me at all, dude. There was no reason for those wheel locks to be on that tight.
Only thing I can give you crap for is using hand tool sockets on an impact. I know MOST people are going to say it's fine but after having friends go to the ER from the socket exploding, I can only suggest using proper impact sockets.
Thankfully they aren't too expensive unlike a hospital bill!
Sunex sockets from amazon have treated me well and fit snug to the fasteners to help avoid major marring.
I actually do have impact sockets haha but the 19mm impact didn't go far enough on the lug nut I was using 😅
the price of AFD's spacer is toooo expensive...
Those studs should be replaced in the event somebody thought that they could reuse them. I know you replaced your studs but for anyone watching. They are way past the yield point and entered the plastic phase.
Ain't nothing happening with that tiny impact...lol
If they weren't over-torqued it'd take them off! haha
@@KevinVo need an uga dugga... not 0.25 uga dugga. lol
Shouldn't need that much leverage. Imagine getting a flat on the highway. You're supposed to be able to change your tires with a basic tire iron, not a pole vault.
Yeah no way those were coming off with the tire iron haha
hehe first!
🎁
@@KevinVo 😊
Kevin, you are weak and need to hit the gym! 😅 jk your channel is always full of valuable information.
1) the spacers definitely help fill out those wheel wells.
2) you should be a teacher or instructor, if you aren't already. Like maybe be a mechanic instructor. And maybe for any kind of boxer engine since your channel centers around them. Unless you consider yourself an all around mechanic
I don't have the patience to teach people! Haha jk I'm teaching through my CZcams 🤣
You're not an idiot or wrong or weak, the torque spec should be no more than 90 ft/lbs. Dealerships just spray and pray when it comes to impacting your nuts back on. I've run into aluminum wheels that are nearly fused to hubs because dealerships and mechanics just blast the nuts on and call it a day and then your weak wristed friends are stuck on the side of a road because they can't get their wheels off their car to fix a flat. guuuuhhhhhhhhhhh
Yeah, I'd say there was an excess amount of ugga duggas used.
Nah you didn't do anything wrong. Those wheel locks shouldn't be on that tight
All the crap in the world!
Not gonna lie, this confused me at first 🤣
@@KevinVo Dad jokes got you haha, I love that you show even the failures! We all have them and this is a great reminder for me, still feeling like an amateur from time to time :)
Never hit a stud with an hammer dude you can damage the threads. Instead screw the lug nut on and hit the lug nut 👍🏽
I wasn't going to reuse them anyway haha
