Une phrase qui a du génie.
Cette phrase m'a intrigué tellement d'années, de temps à autre quand je la réentendais... Ma copine du lycée adorait la chanson et cette ligne, et moi dans un bonheur/optimisme/naïveté à toutes épreuves (encore pas mal aujourd'hui), et alors que Balavoine a toujours été mon préféré en "variété", je n'arrivais juste pas à comprendre le sens de cette phrase, pourtant simple de mots, mais philosophiquement profonde de sens : "si l'on meurt malheureux, c'est que l'on a forcément foiré quelque part, et on ne peut alors que regretter certaines choses qui ont mené à ça".
Je me suis creusé la tête vraiment pour essayer de comprendre, mais impossible le concept m'avait fait planter toute réflexion hors de ma propre logique.
Une 20aine d'année plus tard, au détour de quelques malheureux évènements, cette ligne m'est revenu dans le coin de la tronche il y a 2 mois, par hasard, et là... illumination, et c'était inattendu et plutôt reboostant (comme souvent avec lui) de me prendre cette (belle) petite gifle poétique de Balavoine après coup :)
(Mini passage "je raconte ma vie", pardon, mais on est dans des com youtube il n'y a quasiment qu'ici que je pouvais partager cette anecdote, plutôt longue comparé à son intérêt réel :D )

Des chansons souvent "tristes", mais avec des mots qui avaient de l'impact, et d'une grande profondeur.

Ah, si seulement il avait la traduction des paroles en même temps… s’il avait réalisé ce qui se passait dans le dernier couplet.
La puissance de cette chanson ! à la fin on en prend la tête , on est intimidé par l'escalade des paroles !
C'est ce qui rend sa réaction assez inintéressante, en fait. Une bonne moitié de l'appréciation de cette chanson tient au crescendo des paroles, l'emballement mélodique est en phase avec le barrage en couilles du personnage. Ce pauvre Derek devrait faire un poil plus d'efforts...
@@SCharlesDennicon pas d’accord: l’apport d’un total étranger pour appréhender de façon honnête et vierge une chanson que nous français connaissons depuis toujours est inestimable ! Ce que j’aime avec Dereck, c’est qu’il écoute TRÈS attentivement ce qui ressort GLOBALEMENT de la chanson : d’abord la musique qu’il dissèque minutieusement (et à ce sujet: les remarques sur les arrangements des songs est toujours très fin et argumenté), et ensuite la voix, et seulement la voix. Sans comprendre les paroles. Ça nous donne un avis brut sur l’interprète : ça touche l’âme, le coeur, …ou pas!
Je comprends parfaitement que tout l’apport littéraire des paroles de cette chanson de Balavoine est essentiel pour nous. Mais j’aime aussi comprendre pourquoi la chanson est aussi efficace. Savoir par exemple que même sans les paroles elle est énorme. Rien que pour ça je remercie Dereck d’être né et d’avoir eu cette curiosité d’esprit d’aller regarder ce qui se faisait ailleurs qu’aux USA, et de partager ses feelings sur ce qu’il découvre. J’ai fait la démarche inverse en tant que musicien pendant très longtemps, c’est-à-dire que j’allais écouter beaucoup chez les anglo-saxons, et aujourd’hui bien plus tard, je me rends compte de la qualité de certaines des chansons françaises que j’aimais déjà, mais sans les apprécier à leur juste valeur… Vive Dereck!

C'est ce qui a séduit le publique à l'époque, une musique au commencement très original et surtout des paroles très osées.

Un non bilingue ne comprendra jamais toute la subtilité des paroles d'une chanson comme nous français on a beau lire les traductions des chansons anglaises on passe à côté des jeux de mots, du côté poétique, du phrasé, de toute la portée d'une chanson. C'est ainsi. Ne me quitte pas par exemple toutes les traductions du monde ne rendent pas justice au texte français. C'est très intéressant de voir Derek s'intéresser à l'instrumentation et la voix et après aux paroles. Si tu regardes les réacts des autres youtubeurs ils ne font même pas les efforts que fait dereck (sauf si les paroles sont inscrits directes sur la vidéo) de rechercher les paroles, quand ça a été écrit etc ils disent juste wow, belle voix et c'est tout. Dereck est de loin le plus intéressant de tous dans ce domaine.
C'est pareil pour toutes les langues, hein. Et je connais pas mal d'autres youtubeurs qui vont chercher les paroles des chansons s'ils ne comprennent pas la langue, comme avec Rammstein, par exemple. Ne pas comprendre, c'est passer à coté du meilleur, autant n'écouter que des morceaux instrumentaux.

I never heard anyone make a cover of this song, and you know why? Because he's so high all the time that nobody can sing it... A friend of mine knew him, they were friends and he still cries thinking about him... He told me he was very shy... When they were going to dance, he was always at the bar because he was afraid to dance, the girls were looking at him all the time but he was so shy he never talked to them... He was a really nice person, real, always saying what he thought even if it was not what the others were thinking... He wrote and composed this song and then became famous, after "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" written for him... When he became rich after all the beautiful songs he wrote and sang, he gave a big part of his money for Africa to create more places for water... He was engaged, nice, had lot of humility... A big lost for us... Daniel, we miss you, you're still in our heart, for ever. Thank you Derek, really... Love 😔💝

It's really interesting how this song starts with a second-degree, almost ironic tone, and progressively slips into tragic, and ever more so. The tragic and megalomaniac dream was (probably) supposed to be a mirror of his times - how worse do we stand nowadays ? This sort of lyrical construction is very reminiscent of David Bowie, to me, or La Maison Borniol by Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine.
David Bowie was not all that good in my opinion! This guy Daniel is a much better singer and I don’t understand the lyrics, but enjoy this song with much more enthusiasm than any of Bowie’s!

So interesting to see how you instantly appreciated that song as somewhat of a joyful song, because of the upbeat tempo, the strong vocals, and the rich instrumentation... while the passion in this one comes from absolute desperation.
This is probably one of his most tragic songs. We french are so familiar with the lyrics that we forget the genius of the contrast between the content and the music.
It is a bit sad though that you can't totally grasp the beauty of his writing... you would love his work even more ! 😉

Hi Dereck! Thanks for your react on Daniel Balavoine. Yes Le Chanteur (The Singer) is the most famous of his repertoire but also the one that launched and propelled his career.
Yet it wasn't a foregone conclusion! It was the opening B-Side of the eponymous album and the also the B-SIDE of a promotional single "Si Je Suis Fou" (If I'M Crazy).
But it was a programmer for a major national radio who was very well known at the time, Monique Le Marcis (who could make and break the career of a singer!) who felt that this title would be successful and struggled to have it broadcast daily. This woman often appears in TV documentaries including those of Daniel Balavoine in whom she believed when Eddy Barclay, the boss of a record compagny was fed up with him cuz he had released 3 or 4 albums in 70's but without success! He wanted to fire him! But he had the support of Léo Messir, the vice-president of this record compagny since his arrival.
The single has sold more than 500'000 copies, will be ranked no.4 in the charts and will become a radiphonic song!
It deals with irony of the ephemeral career of an artist, the success then the oudatedness and also the decline in the profession as well as the forfeiture, but it isn"t autobiographical.

In 1978 , Daniel Balavoine was not successful. There is no hits , in his last records . The famous producer , Eddie Barclay wanted to fire him quicky. So , Daniel took a good pen. It was HIS LAST CHANCE. He wrote " Le Chanteur " for . . . Eddie Barclay. He sings what he wants to do , in his singer life. "Le Chanteur" is his first "tube".
He even famously said that if that track was a success, he would do Daniel a bl***j*b...
So after it became a success and Daniel did his first concert, Barclay went to see him backstage, and Daniel asked him for the promised favor ^^

Je me souviens, j'étais au collège, et dès l'instant où le directeur de l'établissement a été au courant du décès tragique de Daniel Balavoine, la sonnerie a retenti alors qu'il nous restait encore 30mn de cours, et TOUT LE MONDE dans le collège/lycée est descendu dans la cours et s'est mis à chanter, pleurer, échanger... c'était émouvant et ça m'a marqué à vie ! ♥♥♥ Merci à cette chaîne CZcams de le mettre à l'honneur comme tant d'autres ! It is not the most famous, but it is just beautiful.
First song of his (after Starmania) that was really successful. It's a fantastic song that describes the full career of a "typical" singer, from humble start to fame to decline. A perfect arc. The lyrics are like all Balavoine lyrics: in your face, strong, powerful, impossible to look away. A gem. I still know it by heart.

First sorry for my bad english and all my writting errors. You know Dereck, in France he's a clasical singer of our childhood, i always loved his songs and you are rigth his songs are full of energy, passion and new sounds for that time, but the most powerfull are the lyrics and the themes.
He was more than a singer in our country, he chose to be the voice of the youg people to the politics and he spended a lot of time with NGO to help poor people for exemple. His life was as full of meaning and fights for the weakest, just like in his songs, he was a very good person. I'm truly happy that you discovered his work, it's diamond.

That's Balavoine first big hit! It used quite a specials keyboards like the flute at the beginning is made with a Mellotron. The funky phase that you taught was guitar is actually a Hohner Clavinet.
