  • The Mets are sitting atop National League East and enjoying a good return so far on the team's $196 million payroll. But included in that figure is nearly $1.2 million for a player that hasn't stepped to the plate in more than 20 years, and one the team will continue to pay for another 14 years. Here's more on the now-infamous arrangement between an athlete and an owner, and the most notorious Ponzi scheme in history.

The masses are so ignorant. Instead of having to pay him all at once, the team got to keep the money at that time. That gave them the opportunity to make money off the money in the meantime - even if it meant just gaining interest. On the other hand, it’s money that Bonilla couldn’t use to make money. And Mr. Cohen should explain that, instead trying to help vilify the man.

Hardly these kinda numbers -- but in November 1976, the Cleveland Indians signed free agent pitcher Wayne Garland to a 10-year, $2.3 million contract. A torn rotator cuff and other injuries found his W/L after five forgetful seasons at 28-48 with a 4.50 ERA.....and outta MLB. Years later, a co-owner of the club admitted the signing was only done for PR purposes, since the ownership group knew they were selling the franchise....which was done in early 1978.

There's Derek Jeter, Manny Ramirez, and even Bruce Sutter, who last pitched for the Atlanta Braves in 1988 but was being paid on a deferred contract until 2021. So basically, the Wilpons thought that they were pulling the wool over Bobby Bo’s eyes, meanwhile they were getting fleeced by Bernie Madoff. Sweet justice! Happy Bobby Bonilla Day!
