  • •Bobby Bonilla day occurs every year on July 1. Here is the story behind the most notorious contract in baseball history.
•On July 1 of every year from 2011-2035, the New York Mets have and will write a $1.19 million check to former player Bobby Bonilla - even though he hasn’t suited up for the team in the 21st century. “Remember, it's not what you make or what you have. It's what you keep,” said Bonilla's agent, Dennis Gilbert. “Deferred compensation helps you keep your money.”

Bobby Bo was my favorite Baseball player ! He didn't suck as some of you say ! He was great with the Pirates but going to the Mets and trying to put a team on his shoulders became overwhelming for him especially the high expectations the fans had from Bonilla.. He could have been a much better player if he was able to block out the media and dealing with the fans which have limited patience in N.Y.. Too me he should have had much more than 287 career Homers he was too big and too strong for less than 300 career homers

Time value of money: the $5.9 million in 1999 is equivalent to the current payouts using an 8.0% discount rate. Do the math. You wouldn’t be making this video if he had taking the $5.9 million upfront (in 1999). Again, do the math. The is nothing special here.
