Roman got new sunglasses. how am I supposed to trust his opinion now.
Right on
Yeah I don’t who is this new guy called roman
@Righteous Hmm, what does that say about your cognitive abilities? From where I am sitting, they seem almost non-existent.
Soy Boy
I went to my dealership 2 weeks ago for the pre-order. I built a diesel Rubicon from the ground up, loaded and walked out at $59K. The estimated time of delivery was 6-8weeks. My dealer rep called me this morning and told me the production is slated for Nov 25. Takes a few days to produce the vehicle so their estimate to my doorstep is first week of December.
josh smith what state are you in?
Kim Hanthorn Texas.
I think your dealership is lying to you big time about that timing haha. One week from factory to your doorstep?? It’ll be at least a month if not more.
Riley Gallagher my wife’s special order took 10 days after ordering not diesel obviously maybe different
Riley Gallagher The wait is getting the production line ready. To actually create the vehicle only takes a couple days. Same for the train ride to Texas. If the gladiator is any indication those numbers seem solid.
Here's Everything You Need To Know From The Chief Engineer! Minus fuel economy and price.
Maxey why u hating
Just look it up
yup
I believe it adds $6000.00 total...$4000.00 for the engine and $2000.00 for the mandatory automatic.
Maxey 500 mile range ~20 gallon tank. Simple math
@@LS1LT1 i'll stick with gas. Imaging charging , $2000 extra for an automatic in 2019.
I have the 3L eco diesel in my 2014 Grand Cherokee Summit. I LOVE this engine. Great fuel economy, tons of torque, tons of power, and I love it.
So basically this engine has already been tested and all these posters on here are whining for nothing
The FCA guy is right. There is a lot of difference between the old & new diesels. The old ones were reliable & ran forever, the new ones have an EGR / emissions system that chokes the life out of them and are nothing but maintenance headaches. FCA has a new government mandated recall right now for the EGR cooler on the gen-2 ecodiesels for coolant leaks & potentially catching fire, resulting in trucks burning to the ground. I sure hope FCA has addressed these issues with the gen-3 engine!!
Paul Ehlers I read on another video discribing the third gen ecodiesel still consists of the same issue problems as the last model just some of the major parts are bigger or built with different material , but the major part(camshaft) is still pressed, I’m not a mechanic but a mechanic who was familiar with the problems had commented and said that that was a Major problem so it’s just a matter of time til it has flaws like the old one. But of course you can delete it and all and take away the back lash, but hearing that a major component is pressed and not some kindof bolted ? Not sure how reliable that would be, that’s why I ordered a gladiator with 3.6 instead , rather than wait to have a mother eco diesel nightmare as I’ve read over and over again.
@@camberridgeoff-roading3822 The gen-3 hasn't been on the road in owners hands yet, so there isn't any track record for it at this point. I am a retired diesel mechanic and the pressed cam drive gear was a minor issue with the gen-2 Eco's. The big issues were crankshaft bottom end/bearing problems = blown engines and coolant leaks particularly with the EGR cooler. The government has made FCA issue a massive recall for the EGR cooler because they pose a fire hazard & there has been multiple trucks burn to the ground because of the EGR problems. The new gen-3 will have two EGR coolers to potentially go bad. The EPA has cracked down on the aftermarket tune & delete manufacturer's and at present there isn't any tunes available to do a delete even if you wanted to. Because of this there might not be a tune developed of the gen-3. FCA has dug themselves a pretty big hole due to the issues with the Gen-2 ecodiesel & the EPA required emission components that choke & kill the engine.
Anyone wanna take bets this thing blows up like the previous ecodiesels made by fiat?
Long Live my 12 valve cummins with the p pump none of that EPA stuff here
If you want a good solid diesel engine, go find a 6.5 TD takeout from a 2001+ HMMWV. Rock solid - just make sure to add Stanadyne to each tank to keep the ULSD from ruining your Injection Pump. No DEF. No nonsense with not being able to tune your engine. Just simple diesel torque goodness.
I still want one---but it's been a long, long wait! And now I live on Molokai where there are no new car dealerships. That said, my JK Rubicon was shipped here about two and a half years ago from Springville, Utah. Shipping a car to Hawaii from the west coast the vehicle goes via Matson. From Oahu to Molokai it's carried over by the Young Brothers barge. I'm anxious to drive a new JL diesle Wrangler Unlimited. Thank you Roman & your Jeep chief engineer friend for this nice introduction to the JL Wrangler Unlimited diesel! Well done!
You guys are the best thanks for being on top of all the cool stuff
I do like the way you do your shows. Its always fun with a little bit of everything. Big car nerds for sure. Thanks
I was just at an auto show where the Jeep presenter made the announcement about the Eco-diesel coming to the Wrangler in 2020 (can't recall if she said it was going into the Gladiator as well). I immediately lit up because if there's one reason I never got a Wrangler, it was the awful fuel economy. I own a 2008 Liberty and that thing eats gas, and all the Wranglers up until this have even worse fuel economy than my 3.7 with the 4spd auto. So yea, this is great news. Thanks, JEEP, for finally making reasonable improvements to your flagship vehicle. It was about time. In a few years, when I reach 250K miles on the Libby, I may pick up a used 2020 Wrangler with this Eco-diesel.
Jeep now FINALLY has this Toyota lover's attention... Great video! Thanks!
Just outside of Zion!!! Roman is spoiled and blessed to be there!
Thank you for this! Been waiting forever for more details.
I think it will bring a new wave of customers. Particularly those who love to drive the Jeep daily but held back because they were MPG conscious.
With this ECO diesel, your getting regular sedan MPG.
Now your making your daily commute to work an urban adventure.
Man that thing is gonna be monster on the trails! With that kind of torque!👋😎👍awesome!
Why I'll pass on the Diesel Wrangler. Because the proven Pentastar 3.6 has a range of 550 miles and makes 295 HP naturally aspirated on regular gasoline that cost's a lot less than diesel fuel, has the same tow rating, is cheaper to maintain, weighs 425 lbs less and the vehicle cost's $6,000 less. It's for people with more dollars than sense I guess.
I have no off roading experience, but does increasing a vehicle's torque at low rpm make for a better driving experience while crawling over obstacles at low speed? And would it make the Wrangler more capable?
@@GreghouseVanBouten Not really. At least not in a vehicle that is as light as the Wrangler. It's fun though, because you can usually easily spin the tires, and with the crawl ratio in the new Wranglers, it means that quite often you won't actually have to add any gas, which for people that don't brake with their left foot offroad could be super useful. It really won't affect the capability however.... unless it was a manual, which is a trim they're not selling.
Edit: Some people have tuned these things to over 300 horsepower and near 500 lb of torque, so buying it with the intention of tuning the engine while keeping the mpg could be a viable and no-downsides option.
@@GreghouseVanBouten The previous answer is incorrect, the diesel will crawl way better than the standard 3.6L gas engine.
Sure the 3.6L does a great job with the torque multiplication of the low gearing but with 260lb-ft of torque @ 4800RPM its engine doesn't make great low end power.
The 3.0L diesel in the ram makes its peak torque at 1600rpm, I imagine this will be very similar. It will crawl at idle with no throttle input with 440lb-ft of torque at such a low RPM. Watch any diesel crawling video on CZcams vs a gas engine in the same vehicle, it's amazing how great they are.
The 3.6 gets 550 mile range?? Are you sure you meant to type 550?? Or did you mean 250??
@@hogrod To clarify what I said, that'll be great if you don't want to have to add any input, left foot brake, or if it's a manual, but on an automatic that doesn't change the capability of the vehicle. Crawling no doubt it will be a better experience with no throttle input, and assuming the torque curve is rather Progressive at the low end and the throttle response is tuned so that the thing doesn't just jump to 1400 RPM everytime you touch the gas, it'll be a great experience.
The Wrangler is never torque limited offroad however, so capability wise, it will make them zero difference to a stock Wrangler's capability, despite the change in feel.
And on road, unless you're going to tune it, you better expect it to be a good amount slower, and if you do anything high speed Offroad, good luck not bending that front axle, because that sumbitch is going to be front heavy. Been there, have done that.
For some people that really like to play on the Rocks, this PowerPlant will probably a great option, for a lot of other people, it won't be. Just got to figure out what you're going for.
I'm very intrigued with the new diesel jeep! I really want to test this rig out as soon as possible!
I really appreciate adding "at least in america" in the beginning of video.
Tomasz Ziobrowski except he’s wrong. Jeep has had a diesel in the US many times over the years.
kinda worries me that the chief engineer is having "some difficulty" opening the hood of his creation...
The chief engineer is a manager of the other engineers, he has minions. 🤣
Italian engineers you know, Jeep died when they took over. It’s as they say about fiat, fix it again Tony!
@@snocreature4life ... You may have a point, Jeeps are NOT the most reliable by anyones standard.
Modern jeeps have never been the most reliable vehicle. I'm not talking just the jk and newer. I saying all the way back to the cj.
😂first thing I thought
Can't wait to testdrive that beast!
I would feel more confident if Cummins designed this diesel engine instead.
Nissan get the American diesel, jeep gets euro crap over controlled rattle box!
cummins makes a 4 cyl diesel
Says a random dude that would never buy one
@@MyDrom I'm still driving my 91 YJ daily, have had more built jeeps than Sema, and in theory, would buy my second ever "new" Jeep if they made a manual trans, Gladiator Rubicon, (and only because I dont want to do an axle swap on a new truck) and diesel. I'm willing to wait a bit, till it's out, and proven, but i dont think jeep will let me put together what i want.
But the eco diesel has got to be proven to me. There are two kinds of diesel's today, simple and reliable, or efficient over controlled ratthetrap nightmares built for station wagons in eroupe.
@@goodnough1 and Nissan abandoned using the 5L. In the next gen. They didn't sell worth a damn. Maybe they would if their trucks didn't have 2005 interior, 3/4 ton prices, 3/4 fuel mileage and 0 capabilities of a 3/4 ton. Why spend 65k on it when you can get a 6.7? And that..... is why Nissan failed with it. Oh and as far as Jeep, there's no way the 5L would fit in one.
Great video as usual. Love the new Wranglers, but one look at the JL forum issues page and all the problems people are having with their steering, and Jeeps inability to fix them has convinced me to wait for the Bronco.
just ordered the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon diesel ($4000 dollar option retail) at the dealership. Looking forward to this machine.
Love this Jeep and loved seeing your Rebel Ram Rouser at SEMA. It was dirty cause you use it!
The wrangler rubicon with the diesel is going to cost close to $80k in Canada, they are already 67k with the 2.0L turbo.
I still own a Jeep Liberty with a 2.8L diesel. Purchased in the great USA. Jeep had a small diesel in the Cherokee back in the 80's.
Make a 2 door manual version, please!
Hell yeah... 2 door manual would be the shit!
Unfortunately, i bet they never will. Because the DEF tank takes away to much from the fuel tank, and they have no manual available for that torque.
@@BrassJeep And who knows how many other obstacles would be in the way? But still, I would love a 2 door manual...
2 door diesel are available in Europe since the release.
As it was for the previous model.
They wouldn’t sell
So glad to hear the Diesel will be avilable on the sport model. I was totally expecting it to be exclusive to Saraha and Rubicon.
I was expecting the opposite. Sport and Sahara, no Rubicon. It’s cool they have the confidence to push that much torque through the Rubi’s axles
@@trevorj79 Rubicon has the largest axles of any Wrangler.
I’m glad they made a diesel to put in the wrangler. I’ve got a 2 JL rubicon now and was considering getting the diesel. Disappointing that you can’t get it in the 2 door. Once they put it in the gladiator though 👌🏻
Definitely a contender for year round vehicle. Fun summer trips, capable in bad winter months and high fuel range which I need. Very tempting.
Good info in this one. Nice to listen to someone who knows what they are talking about. :)
As a Ford fan, I hope the new Bronco is competitive in engine options. Although I would love a V8 option, the 3.5 Eco would be just fine with 375hp and 470tq. This is the only Jeep engine I would ever consider in a Jeep. Kudos.
Well I’m not getting a new Jeep now. I wanted a two door manual diesel rubicon.
I love this channel the best host on CZcams his videos are awesome
We already have the JL 2.2l diesel in Australia , this would be a great option. Steve 🇦🇺
Do you guys have the emissions crap on them?
Agree ... but apparently the V6 Diesel can’t fit into the RHD models ... engineering fail.
@@JohnDoe-nz6bk We got the 2.2l diesel here in europe as well, and to answer your question - yes.
Nick Hü that sucks!
Adrian Black sounds like more of an excuse than a reason. Throw money at it, they can overcome obstacles.
didn't realize the 2 door manual only made up less than 10% of wrangler sales! I need to grab one before they decide to stop making them.
I now dislike 4 doors, 2 doors are the reason for Jeep... maybe not a dumb move, but seems like a slap in the face to me.
2020 Wrangler has a 17.5 gallon tank, assuming this diesel will have the same tank, the FCA guy said over 500 mile range. That works out to 28.5 MPG (theoretically) most likely hwy.
I can not wait to have this 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
cant wait to own one!!
Excited for the diesel wrangler!Should have kept the 4.10 gears though being that the standard now seems to be 40 inch tires 😅
How I wish I still lived in Springdale, Utah so I could have been there! Come visit Pocatello, Idaho
need to know how big the fuel tank is, and the GVRW, weight, payload, and towing. Thanks for getting him on record about the axle ratio.
I'd bet it has an eighteen or nineteen gallon tank in it, considering it has a five gallon def tank to take up room.
Some things I'd do put the 4:10 Axel's/diffs in. Manual transmission def delete and a tune and probably all in the gladiator platform
Best idea in a Jeep for overland camping I winder if it will be back ordered
"Focus our efforts initially"
Hopefully that means in the future the diesel will come with a manual and in a 2 door. Thats what I want.
guys can you show on the up coming videos the tachometer with the RPM gauges. Want to see the difference with the gas JL? thanks,
This is brilliant
I’m guessing it’ll have the same engine price upgrade as the Ram ecodiesel
Possible 500mi range is exciting. The JK has extended tanks available that double capacity... imagine a Wrangler with 900+ miles of range. Oh my.
Imagine if the engine could remain running for 900 miles....
So I'm sure other people that know what they want for off roading are thinking the same as me. What did they do for the axles? I think you'll see more people popping differentials and axle shafts when they lift and go to a larger tire with all that torque.
Awesome! Diesel Death Wobble! Can’t wait for year 2 plus 2 years so I can buy a used one!
I love the blue it's so awesome of a color
Since the towing is limited by the chassis design, will we potentially see a smaller diesel option that will still tow the same weight and get even better mileage? While the numbers on the 3L are impressive for horsepower and torque, I suspect they might be overkill for most applications.
I used to be excited to dive into the desiel market but with all the extra tech, exhaust fluids, strick emissions, weight, ect. It's just not worth all the extra $ for a few extra ft-lbs & mpg, at least to me. I'm quite happy with a mild "do it all" LS build thank you.
Are these not out yet? I was at a detail shop and they had a rubicon eco diesel in it 2 months back.
I want a Cummins Diesel. I hope they provide a different diesel option in the Gladiator. Waiting for a hybrid diesel or hybrid gas before I buy a Gladiator.
This is probably better for jeep lovers in California, i just realized that gas costs the same as diesel in some gas stations
Deisel is almost 10 cents a litre more here
So theirs a chance for a manual diesel? Maybe on updated? (So should I keep my jkur for a while? Maybe the gladiator update?)
Nice interview without pissing off the Chrysler engineer on fuel economy, ride comfort, etc. questions.
First thing I’d do is an EGR and DPF delete to make it more reliable and more powerful. Hopefully it doesn’t have some of the issues that plagued the ram eco diesel.
the problem with that is, It's illegal for a company to sell a DPF delete program for the computer now days.
TexanUSMC8089 there’s always ways to get around it.
As optioned and seen here all for "only $60,000!!". Sticker shock for days...
I've been waiting for a diesel for ever. But at these prices I'll be waiting a long long time.
I have a fully loaded diesel rubicon on order $49,500 plus tax
Its a luxury truck for a few fancy Instagram pics. Real Jeeps are Sports, rolly windows and built in your own driveway.
@@89Ayten You are the worst kind of Jeep person. "ReAl JeEpS aRe SpOrTs".
In the 60's there was a factory option for a Perkins diesel in a CJ.
They sure as shit aint charging 60's prices for it though. What they'll call 'new'.
Sounds great in theory but have they fixed the issues with this engine? Hopefully all the bugs and kinks have been worked out.
Is the frame properly welded before it rusts away in 3 years?
Looks like a mechanic's nightmare. Looks smashed in there. :-)
BigFrogs4x4 compared to what ?
@@MyDrom well a 4cyl. ;-) but you are correct. Many have little room in the engine bay these days. But my 2.8 dmax in my zr2 has lots of room. When I decide to buy a new jeep I'm not sure what engine I would choose.
Get the fenders out and wala, have all the space of the universe.well ,maybe remove the fenders is another mission
@@mandytuning lol probably a lot bolted to them too
@Professor Liberal Avenger hahaha!
2005 - 2006 Jeep Liberty KJ Sport had a 2.8L Common-Rail Diesel engine option (in Canada, at least) with Auto 5 speed.
It was sold in the states as well plus a grand Cherokee diesel too
I hope the reliability of the V6 diesel is better than the one in the Ram, which it is based off of.
Waiting on my decision for the release of the Bronco details. I would prefer the lighter ecoboost with better towing. If they come out with a Tremor version of the Bronco to compete with Rubicon I will 100% get the Bronco.
The lack of towing capacity turns me off the Rubicon, the Grand Cherokee has almost double the 3500lbs. I'm keen to see if the new Bronco will be a robust vehicle like the 1995 I had, or a cynical styling exercise for hipsters..
Imagine what a mild stage 1 tune can do for the output. Stage 1 tunes on a tdi add an impressive amount of output
Yea once you get rid of the emissions crap these 3.0l diesels come alive, and get better mileage to boot
@@jamestaylor-qb9wo i have the green diesel engineering tune as well as the egr and dpf deletes (and swirl motor). gets up and runs when i need it to do so....
How about the regen process, does it still inject raw diesel fuel into #1 cylinder and thin out the engine oil.
What happens when you do a lot of stop and go traffic and it needs to do a regen and the DPF gets clogged. When you have to replace a DPF ya better get ready to shell out big bucks
Admittedly I haven't been up to date with everything jeep so there's a chance I'm gonna sound stupid but I think they should also use the ecodiesel engine in the gladiator. It would compete directly with the Chevy Colorado minus the coolness factor the gladiator has
I wonder if the beefed up the front axle with the extra 500+lbs of motor weight...
I get 600 mile range in my GMC canyon 2.8 drive n 1600 mile loop from cocoa beach area to DC area
Did they do anything to address the excessive slop in the steering? I know they originally said that slop was there as part of the off-roading design but there has to be some kind of improvement over those units that were sold that seem to have to much slop.
I have a 2018 Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel and love it, but if you do local driving the Re-Gen mode will trigger. That could be problematic on the trail, when not traveling at highway speeds. Has that been addressed with this engine?
Interested in that aspect too, by Ram Cummins rarely regens because I do plenty of long runs, but on the two occasions I know of, holy cow the smell is horrible, a cross between burning brakes, or clutch, and a skunk.
Do they make any changes to the drivetrain such as axles to strengthen due to all this torque?
When is Jeep going to add this engine to the Gladiator? Also, what about the factory trailer brake controller that Jeep was gonna make on the Gladiator? Does anyone know?
What about the noise of the engine can you handle it for everyday use !?
Intakes and egr coolers here we come
Nothing beats the om642 in the xh commander and wh grand Cherokee
I may buy one very soon .
This is the best Jeep ever .
@Krumblingus actually, this 3.0 and the 2.2 are pretty damn solid engines. the really bad issue with italian cars and their automotive technology in general are electronics which totally suck. this 3.0 crd is the best thing that could possibly happen to the wrangler. I hope we will get it in europe as well as here we have only the 2.2 diesel and 2.0 turbo gasoline
Krumblingus my wife loves her 2019 wrangler with the turbo 4. No issues whatsoever! However, my 2019 longhorn is a different story.
Krumblingus well, she drove it cross country and has put 14,000 miles on it since June. Only issue is her passenger seat and she averages 25 mpg.
@Krumblingus I know it’s fiat , however fiat makes engine fpr many decades ,from small cars to even big truck loaders ,
Also for the reputation of JEEP the engine got to be solid ,
Whoooot! 'bout TIME!
I have the Cherokee in Australia with 2.0 mutijet diesel it’s rated at 1030 Kays free way driving gets about 850 on a trip ... fulls well up any hill in n 4wd low awsum engine
Just let me know when it's in the Gladiator.
The team spent extensive amount of time developing sound package to keep noise levels down in the cab...top off, doors off lol
Wanna see that gladiator diesel on IKE when its available!!
Does it have the same dangerous amount of lag as the diesel Ram?
Did I hear him correctly? Did he say modified engine mount off a GM AT4?
Why is it in Australia the JL 4 door wranglers get a tow rating of 2495kg ( 5500 lb ) but the USA only has 1500kg ( 3500 lb ) ? same for 3.6 Petrol or 2.2 Diesel
I've got a 2.8 Diesel JK in Australia
Will it ever be on the “Build your own” section of the website??? How hard is that to do Jeep?!?!
Cummins: makes decent Diesel engine for this sized vehicle , made in America
Jeep: piss on it
Ding! Winner!
What size? Are you referring to the 2.8 Cummins?
Hitches,Bitches and Ditches yesir
Hitches,Bitches and Ditches or don’t quote me they have a 3.9 that they have that an aftermarket company puts in jeeps for the military that would’ve been a decent pick but primarily the 2.8
Mason. Easy now. I agree a baby Cummins would be nice. But that power plant does not exist. And Bedsides Cummins focus at this time is on its future to find answer to electric and hydrogen in class 8 tractors. But you’re right would be very cool to see the Cummins name posted on the wrangler.
I want a manual version!
Can you get 4.10 gears from factory and can I put 37 on it without axle work
Great video! Really excited for this engine! I really hope they open it to manual transmission as well! I would love to row gears in this beast!
Not the first time a Jeep has had a diesel. I believe Roman meant to say the first time a Wrangler has had a diesel in NA.
Now they need to add a Stick(Manual)with the diesel 👍😁
I really want to get a 2 door Rubicon w/ the EcoDiesel for my next vehicle. Please offer this in the next 2-3 years.
DEF fluid. First thing that has to go. Full delete and tune. Thing will be a beast. Of course I mean on the 2nd year of the engine model and after warranty ends.
Finally someone offers a diesel on all trim packages.
